Comments about Buffalo MediaStation 6x Portable Blu-ray Writer:
I bought this unit as an accessory for a netbook, and it's small and light enough to carry around in the bag with the netbook. I got this unit to be able to install software and to play CDs, DVDs, and Blu-Ray discs, and all that works just fine. I have burned CDs and DVDs but I haven't yet burned a Blu-Ray disc. The unit is quite noisy when it first spools up a disk and seeks, but it's quiet while playing back a movie or CD.
You get two short USB cables to connect to your computer. One cable has a single connector on each end, for use when you power the unit from its AC adapter. The other cable has two connectors on the computer end, to get enough power via USB so you can use the unit without the AC adapter. The downside is that you use up two USB jacks, and my netbook only has three. I was disappointed that the USA AC adapter is not a universal travel adapter - it is for 120 volts only. This is not a cheap unit, and for the price you pay, you should get a 120/240 volt AC adapter.
When I first connected it to my netbook, Windows 7 found drivers quickly and automatically. It installed as an "Optio" optical drive, which seems to work just fine. A major plus is that the Buffalo unit comes with a full software suite from Cyberlink on DVD, while some other Blu-ray drives don't come with any usable player software. The software can rip and burn audio discs, burn data discs, edit and burn videos, plus play DVDs or Blu-rays using the full-featured Cyberlink PowerDVD V8 player software.
The unit has a slide-out tray that pops open when you press a button on the front, but the button is a tiny black button flush-mounted in a black front panel, which is hard to use.
Overall, I like the unit and would recommend it, and I rate it 4.5 stars.
