The LaCie 10TB 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server provides professional, reliable, central data storage. Instantly store, share and back up from any PC or Mac on your network. With a whopping 10 TB of storage capacity and a total of five drive bays for increasing capacity up to 15 TB, the 5big is further expandable with 2 USB and 2 eSATA ports--giving you all the space you need! Dual Ethernet ports enable you to perform link aggregation and get twice the performance of a single Gigabit Ethernet connection. Recommended for networks of up to 50 users, the 5big Network 2 is the solution for IT environments seeking high capacity and high data transfer rates.

Courtesy of the secure RAID modes, including RAID 5 and RAID 6, the 5big Network 2 allows you to retain data access, even if one disk should fail. Hot-swappable disk trays even enable maintenance without affecting workflow. "Spare" modes permit a second level of protection, a kind of "automatic maintenance" that will instantly start rebuilding the RAID protection in the event of disk failure. With space for 5 disks, the 5big provides greater capacity than 4-disk solutions in nearly every RAID mode. Additional spare disks are available as an option for immediate replacement (not included).

Get added security and improve data portability by backing up your LaCie 5big Network 2, at your own convenience, to an external hard drive. Accomplish this via the server's USB and eSATA ports using the built-in copy system. The 5big Network 2 also comes equipped with 3 client licenses for Genie Backup Manager Pro for Windows, as well as 3 licenses for Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac. This software may be installed on each PC or Mac for client backups to the NAS, and enables you to reliably and efficiently back up your documents, emails, settings and other assets. The software supports compressed, encrypted or image backups, and implements a computer recovery function in the event of system failure. You can also use Windows 7 Backup, if you prefer. The LaCie 5big Network 2 works with Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, too, including Time Machine, making it the perfect partner for your Mac!

Set up an iSCSI share of your 5big Network 2 and mount it as a local share on your computer, in the same manner that external hard drives get mounted when you connect them to your PC or Mac. An iSCSI connection will grant you performance and versatility for professional applications. You can even use the 5big Network 2 as the final backup destination for any server integrating an iSCSI initiator.

Thanks to the 5big Network 2's new widget-like dynamic web interface, administration is simple, convenient and safe. With DHCP and Apipa support, network configuration is quick and automatic. The product integrates easily with existing Windows domains via Active Directory, and enables user, group, share and quota management. Access to administration pages and shares is simple with LaCie Network Assistant. What's more is that the server can provide you with email notifications of events such as backups, disk failures, dangerous temperatures, and more.

The 5big Network 2 assists you in the reduction of power consumption by switching to idle mode (where the disk spins off) after a pre-determined inactivity time. You may also schedule a deep sleep on / off mode, according to your requirements. Courtesy of the Wake-on-LAN feature, the server may be switched back to operating mode from the client side. The 5big Network 2 also integrates UPS support via its USB ports, in order to ensure proper shutdown in the event of a power failure. Additionally, its exclusive durable and elegant aluminum design, by Neil Poulton, makes it your partner in being environmentally conscious, as it's recyclable and ROHS compliant.

Note! Total accessible capacity varies depending upon operating environment (typically 10-15% less).

A Comprehensive Backup Solution
Get added security and improve data portability by backing up your LaCie 5big Network 2, at your own convenience, to an external hard drive. Accomplish this via the server's USB and eSATA ports using the built-in copy system. The 5big Network 2 also comes equipped with 3 client licenses for Genie Backup Manager Pro for Windows, as well as 3 licenses for Intego Backup Manager Pro for Mac. This software may be installed on each PC or Mac for client backups to the NAS, and enables you to reliably and efficiently back up your documents, emails, settings and other assets. The LaCie 5big Network 2 works with Mac OS X 10.5 and 10.6, too, including Time Machine, making it the perfect partner for your Mac!
RAID Protection
RAID 5, the default mode, is designed for speed, security and capacity. RAID 5+Spare is designed for the same, with added security. RAID 6 specializes in speed and extra security. RAID 1 is best for mirroring (redundant backup), while RAID 0 is designed for both speed and capacity.
Automated NAS Backup
Remove the hassle and potential for human error from the process of backing up your NAS. The new widget-like dynamic web interface, the Dashboard, enables you to replicate the contents of your 5big Network 2 onto an attached USB / eSATA hard drive--or vice-versa. Create automatic backup jobs designed for each of your attached devices. Backups may also be configured to begin automatically every time a USB hard drive is connected to the 5big Network 2. You also have the ability to use your NAS to back up another NAS, whether it's on the local network or remote*. You can even configure a nightly backup of your NAS onto a backup server in a totally different building 2
Intelligent Internal File Sharing
Increase your business efficiency via an effective tool for collaboration. All people in the office will enjoy the ability to share files, whether they're on a PC, Mac, or Linux system. Define whether a folder is private or public within the company. For private folders, closely manage access by setting user- or group-level permissions. It's surprisingly simple. Whatever your office's internal file sharing requirements, the 5big Network 2 delivers highly versatile accessibility
Mobility = Productivity
In an ever more mobile world, your employees need access to their files anytime, anywhere. LaCie MyNAS revolutionizes NAS remote access, offering one of the easiest setups in the industry. Simply name your network storage without leaving the Dashboard, and it's ready for access on-the-go. All that's required is an Internet connection. From within a browser, employees are able to download, manage, and upload files remotely. They can even stream image and audio files. A free app for iPhone and iPad affords convenient, immediate access to all your NAS' files and storage capacity--right on your smartphone or tablet
Dual Ethernet
Dual Gigabit Ethernet ports enable you to perform link aggregation and get twice the performance of a single Gigabit Ethernet connection. You can also use failover for an additional layer of security, automatically rerouting transfers from the failed Ethernet link to the healthy one--so your data remains accessible and you experience no hardware failure-induced downtime. Recommended for networks of up to 50 users, the 5big Network 2 is the solution for IT environments seeking high capacity and high data transfer rates
Centralized Printing
You can also simplify the printing scheme of your office by connecting a compatible printer to one of the USB ports on the 5big, enabling instant printing from any networked computer
iSCSI Target
Set up an iSCSI share of your 5big Network 2 and mount it as a local share on your computer, in the same manner that external hard drives get mounted when you connect them to your PC or Mac. An iSCSI connection will grant you performance and versatility for professional applications. You can even use the 5big Network 2 as the final backup destination for any server integrating an iSCSI initiator
Eco Management
The 5big Network 2 assists you in the reduction of power consumption by switching to idle mode (where the disk spins off) after a pre-determined inactivity time. You may also schedule a deep sleep on / off mode, according to your requirements. Courtesy of the Wake-on-LAN feature, the server may be switched back to operating mode from the client side. The 5big Network 2 also integrates UPS support via its USB ports, in order to ensure proper shutdown in the event of a power failure. Additionally, its durable, elegant and heat-dissipating aluminum design makes it your partner in being environmentally conscious, as it's recyclable and ROHS compliant. Plus, the 5big's whisper-quiet smart fan automatically adjusts its spinning speed to suit the internal temperature, consuming minimal energy while cooling the internal components

Great NAS with versatile RAID configuration options and a wealth of features. It's really a one-stop-shop solution for a small office. At the same time it's totally customizable and extremely easy to use and setup. I was actually surprised how clear everything is once you are in front of the administrator interface. I give this product 5 stars without hesitation.

I have over 30 LaCie drives, including 3 Big 4 Quadras which hold my professional photo and video library. I am a big fan of their products, but even with an esata connection, this drive is very slow. It has a huge capacity for the price, but for speed, it doesn't even compare to my Big 4 Quadras. I expected it to perform similarly, but it doesn't. I 'm going to use it only for photo backup, and free up my Quadras for video capture scratch, and 'online' uses. The server functionality isn't important to me, so perhaps its performance in that area would make up for the deficit in speed to some users. Overall, its a good value, but it should be noted that it is no racehorse.

Comments about LaCie 10TB 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:

CONSUMER WARNING: LaCie—Where the Customer Comes Last

In December of 2010 our design company purchased (2) LaCie 5big Network 2 drives for over $2,000 to begin setup of our onsite/offsite backup and archiving system. We received the drives and completed the setup, only to find that we had terrible performance (100MB/30 minute transfer rate). We opened a support ticket with LaCie in December 2010 was asked to send our device log which they reviewed and informed us that the device log does not show any abnormal activity. We connected the drive directly to our computer and confirmed that we still had the same performance issues. After several trouble-shooting attempts we were told to reset the Network drive (which can ERASE ALL DATA). Now we have entered February 2011 and still have the performance issue, so again we contacted LaCie who informed us that the only solution would be to ship the drive back to them for a replacement drive at a charge of $50. We received the new REFURBISHED DRIVE and completed the setup only to find that transfer to the drive was fine, but retrieving files had a transfer rate of 300MB/6 hours. After several months of dialogue with LaCie we worked with an outside vendor to resolve the performance issues without any help from LaCie. We completed the transfer and setup of our backup system and the drives worked from May 2011 to August 2011.

In August 2011, we received the following message from the other LaCie 5big Network 2 drive, "Message from Server: Something wrong with the volume's CNIB, using temporary CNID DB instead. Check server messages for details." Now we have had trouble with both LaCie drives. We again opened a support ticket with LaCie and were given instructions to delete the .AppleDB file from the network drive. After completing the provided instructions access to the Shares were broken and we lost access to all of our data. We again contacted LaCie who told us our only option was to send the drive to them for a Recovery at a cost of $1,500 (almost the entire cost of the drives). We were astounded that the only solution was a complete recovery. We went ahead with sending the drive in again and were informed on August 2 that LaCie would assess the drive and contact us with the next steps. After several weeks of contacts by phone and through the support ticket we finally received a message on August 25 that the recovery was about halfway complete. We never discussed costs or other alternatives, they simply went forward with the recovery without contacting us. After several more attempts for an update on September 1 we were informed that the drive had bad sectors and the recovery was going slow. Finally on September 7 we received a message stating that the recovery was complete and if I could review the attached the attached list to confirm all files were recovered. The document we received contained a 42,000 page document with an unorganized list of all recovered files making it IMPOSSIBLE to confirm an accurate recovery. They charged us for the recovery and returned the drive.

To date we have 86 hours of unbillable time spent on getting these both of these drives to work within our office environment. We feel that it is important to inform consumers of the EXTREMELY POOR QUALITY PRODUCT and TERRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE we have received from LaCie over the past year. We have moved to another backup product and refuse to use any future LaCie products and would suggest all customers reviewing this product investigate other alternatives.

This is my second LaCie purchase. Long time ago I purchased the d2 drive, and that is still running well. LaCie is doing well built, reliable units. The 5big series is no exception, it has good reputation, works great with Linux, etc. This 5big Network 2 10TB server is fast, easy to administer and comes with a great web based interface. Since I've installed the unit at our office, I have been very impressed with the performance and functionality.

We have a lot of information that we can't afford to loose. I've heard a lot of good things about LaCie 5big and decided to give it a try. I have installed LaCie 5big network 2 six months ago and it has, so far, functioned flawlessly. The unit is quiet, efficient, and saves money in the long run. I don't have to worry about my data. I'm surprised I didn't purchase it sooner.

Comments about LaCie 10TB 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:

I've been using LaCie 5big Network 2 for 5 months now. I chose it because it is safe. The data I store on 5big is critical for my work, so I've spent some time looking for the right device. Now after several months of heavy duty usage, I can confirm that LaCie 5big does work as advertised.

Comments about LaCie 10TB 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:

I am a video professional and needed an expandable backup solution for my studio. After researching for what's available on the market and reading different reviews, I opted for the LaCie 5big Network 2. I think that its price/quality/features ration is hard to beat at the moment. The unit has been working flawlessly, not an issue. I'm happy I've chosen it.

If you're looking for an good deal in terms of price/quality/features ratio in an external storage solution with RAID, eSata, etc. in my opinion this is the right product. It's great for small to medium sized offices. I'm working for a designer agency, we've installed this unit and it does the job perfectly and it perfectly fits our needs. Easy to configure and use, quiet, speedy. That's for sure the best centralized external storage solution we've had.

At the same time it's totally customizable and extremely easy to use and setup. I was actually surprised how clear everything is once you are in front of the administrator interface. Comments about LaCie 10TB 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:

It's a high quality product that comes with a wealth of features. The big plus IMHO is the ease of use and setup. You do not have to be an expert to install and manage the unit. We are a small team of photo, video and graphic design professionals sharing an office space. This device was a perfect solution for us. None of us has system administrator skills, and yet we've installed the unit in a matter of minutes. Everything is very intuitive and straightforward. LaCie did a good job on the overall design of the unit and on the design of user interfaces in particular. The performance is impressive too.

Comments about LaCie 10TB 5big Network 2 5-Bay RAID Server:

To start with I think this drive looks great. It's quite compact for a 10TB five-bay RAID array and almost silent. 5big was easy to set up and get running on the network without any complications on several computers. I've connected a UPS unit to it to avoid power failures. The device was immediately recognized by 5big and ready to use in a matter of minutes. I also like the Auto mode for low power consumption when the computer is off or sleeping. One other feature that is not broadly advertised but quite handy is the ability to setup alerts. You can configure the NAS to send an email in case of errors, for example power failure or network error. Great product, overall!

We were looking for some sort of centralized online storage for a group of design professionals working on 10 Macs in a small office. We needed something robust and fault-tolerant. Lacie 10TB 5big seemed to be a natural choice for us. It performs flawlessly, the browser-based config is relatively straightforward for an average computer user. It provides up to 10TB of storage capacity in five bays, expandable with its two USB and two eSATA ports. And the NAS itself is nicely designed, easy to add drives to and runs fairly coolly and quietly. Highly recommended!
