The CMS SUB from Focal Professional is a professional-quality studio subwoofer, and an ideal companion for the CMS-series studio monitor speakers. The subwoofer features an 11" front-firing Polyglass cone woofer. The woofer is lightweight and rigid to provide a neutral sound response with tight, controlled bass. The internally-braced MDF cabinet houses a 300W RMS amplifier with BASH technology for strong, distortion-free performance. A front-panel bass port helps to extend bass frequencies even further.

The rear panel features standard XLR connectors for wide compatibility with virtually any professional sound system. It also has controls for level adjustment, phase adjustment, and a polarity switch. A low-pass filter is included, along with mute capability. The subwoofer can also be muted externally via a footswitch. Solid feet on the bottom of the subwoofer isolate it from the floor to prevent vibrations and reflections.

Note! Footswitch sold separately.

Comments about Focal CMS SUB 300W 11" Front-Firing Studio Subwoofer:

My only other usage of a sub was on my Logitech Home Theatre system. Unfortunately, those were what kept me away from getting this sub for a very long time. The Logitech sounds like an 'elephant under my desk', and I knew that wouldn't benefit my mixes.

My listening space is also very small - 7'x9'. These were some of the main factors in why it took so long to get this. I am now a believer!

I coupled this with the CMS 65's. I rolled off at 45Hz on the 65's and left the sub set at 45Hz. Even though it has a separate volume and mute switch, I decided to use the PreSonus Monitor Station to independently control both the 65's and the Sub; this way I can have the control over both the 65's and the sub at my fingertips. This was a very wise choice.

A couple other things to add: My listening space is small, but it is still decently treated (rule of thumb - spends the same on treatments as you do on the monitors - which I have done.) And as a finishing touch, I also use the IK Multimedia ARC Room Correcting System. This is the icing on the room treatment 'cake' and should be used last, if you decide to use this type of plugin.

Back to the sub. The pairing of this sub and the 65's are sublime. The sub is thick, meaty, punchy, moist, and yummy. I don't have it set at a very loud level, because it wasn't needed (only about ¼ turn in total volume). But the result is pure sonic bliss. I can not recommend this setup more strongly. In fact, even though I don't have the CMS 40's or 50's, I'd be willing to best that they would compete quite nicely overall with the 65's in a monitor + sub combo. Because my 65's are set to roll off at 45 Hz, I can still listen/work with the sub off and not lose too much in the mix. This is great for night listening and less casual listening, when the sub isn't really needed.

One final thing to add. The 2 main reasons for getting the sub were: The style of music I listen to and the volume I listen and mix at. I listen/mix mostly EDM (Electronic Dance Music) and the sub bass is very important in that style. Accurately hearing what is going on down there is crucial. I also listen at a moderate level: 75-85dB range - usually never much louder. This sub help with the Fletcher Munson curve and fills in the low end at lower listening levels - perfectly. I never have to adjust the volume of either the sub or the 65's independently. I just adjust the overall volume with the PreSonus and the sub fills in the bottom perfectly.

Even though the sub was bigger/heavier than I expected, this isn't a con. You have to have the size if you want the sound. It was just a little bigger than I was imagining.

Bottom line. A balanced listening area is the sum of all it's pieces: monitors, subs, room treatments, etc. The CMS Sub matches perfectly with the CMS 65's to bring a complete picture to your musical soundscape. If you want to hear the low end without being blown out of your room, the CMS Sub is a perfect choice. My mixes thank me.
