    Stopgap viewfinder loupe for C100?

Following the advice of some other pro shooters who have tried to solve the problem of how to see the C100's LCD screen in bright sunlight, I purchased one of these kits and modified it (as they had) with a razor-blade knife to fit around the knuckle-hinge on the LCD.

First of all, if you're worried about cutting the faux leather material, don't be. It's a very small cut, only about half an inch by about 3/8 of an inch, and it does not remove enough material to cause problems should you decide to attach it to another type of LCD screen later on. It's also very easy to figure out where to make the cuts; just lay it out and mark it with a Sharpie.

The loupe itself is more than adequate to get you a clear look at the screen, and the diopter adjustment (there is one, contrary to reports about earlier models) worked great (although it tended not to stay "in focus" for me as I was bumping my way around my latest outdoor shoot).

The only real issue with this as a temporary or permanent solution is that the elastic band that holds the viewfinder in place is neither very elastic nor very strong; it is not enough to keep the loupe firmly in place, or keep out all the sunlight. I have considered using some tape to seal around the edges; this would certainly work but I'm reluctant to damage any of the plastic border on the LCD (even with tape residue) as I will undoubtedly be selling off my c100 at some point in the future....

One other thing you'll notice, and it'll annoy you: the LCD screen on the C100 does not have much tension in its hinge; it'll move all over the place as you try to squeeze your face into the loupe's eyecup. This is not a flaw in the Hoodman, for sure, but it makes the Hoodman just that little bit more difficult to use, and I join the chorus of C100 users calling on Canon to do something about its execrable (and tiny) viewfinder so we can use the camera in full sunlight without having to jerry-rig solutions like this.

A good viewfinder in shouldermount operation is a problem with the popular new Sony PMW-F3. I wanted to keep things light and simple so I tried out the Hoodman EX1 kit. It is not the most beautiful solution but it works. The occular comes a bit too much to the rear so I need to put extra weight in the back of my rig. Unwanted reflecions on the insider sides of the viewfinder are more than for example in Sacuto's VFs. It is a cheap alternative to consider before switching to EVFs.

Comments about Hoodman EX1 Kit Pro:

I am using this on a panasonic HPX 250. It fits well over the fold out monitor. It is perfect for those times when you are interviewing a 6'5 person and you have to get your tripod as high as it goes. It is fast and ease to put on. I love the magnification, you can focus lightening fast, and makes the monitor displays easier to read. Highly recommend. The only con is it is heavy enough to not stay in place when the monitor is not in its locked position. Not much of a problem for me.

This product is great for anyone shooting outdoors in bright conditions. It covers the rear screen and allows you to review your images without struggling to cover partially with one hand. The magnifier also allows you to see if you focus spot on.

I bought this loupe for my sony F3. It's light and fits the lcd well, but the corners of the screen are a bit blurry. This is due to the lens design of the loupe.
Overall it's not bad and does its job. I recommend it to people who don't want to buy the overpriced loupe from Sony and don't want to struggle with extra batteries, cables and mounting issues of an external EVF.
              Hope this helps

Comments about Hoodman EX1 Kit Pro:

I bought this to use with my Panasonic AF-100. When you mount the AF-100 camera, or many other small cameras models, on a shoulder brace the viewfinder ends up too high to see through. The LCD flip out screen on the side is in the right position, but way too close. The Hoodman EX1 Kit Pro solves the problem so easily. It slips right on to the LCD, fits securely, and with a quick turn of the diopter you are ready to shoot. Remember, the LCD screen still doesn't have enough resolution to allow for critical focus, but the Hoodman does make it possible to see your framing and all your camera data on the screen while in a normal hand-held position. The only thing I wish is that they made the nice little carry case (included) big enough to accommodate the extender and the mounting strap too.
