Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

I use these mics to record video narration and various musical instruments. My setup is to run them through Mackie VLZ1202 mixer, and then feed PC sound card to record with Cubase. The mics are sold in aluminum case, which is very convenient. The look and feel of these microphones is outstanding. When I plugged them up for the first time and heard them in my Denon AH-D600 head phones, I couldn't believe my ears. I gotta say, I own AudioTechnica AT4033 mic, which is very good too, but these sound a whole lot warmer and overall nicer. I can't believe I didn't buy Cascade a lot sooner.

Things that are great about these mics is their warm and natural sound. What's not so great is their whimsical nature being ribbon: you must store them in vertical position only, can't transport in luggage when flying or driving since the box must ensure the mics are always in the upright position. Ribbon mics are very fragile and you can't use them outside because they are too sensitive to the air movement. Additionally, they require a lot of preamp gain. You have to have a preamp. What's more, they are 8-figure, which means you pick up whatever is behind the mic, even if you don't want it. This by itself can be a blessing for making highly accurate stereo effect (MS setup, Blumlien, etc), and can be a curse. But regardless of all these cons, the sound in studio setup makes up for all the draw backs. I love these mics, and I will never give them up!

Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

I used the mics as a matched pair for vocals with guitar and it sounded very textured and real. Great stereo imaging. Nice coloring. I was a big fan right out of the box. I can't wait to try them on overheads.

Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

Used these mics on Banjo and Acoustic the day after I got them. They sound good. Gave that buttery ribbon sound to the bluegrass that I was working with. Really worked well with a vocal as well. The side rejection of each was also very useful, it kept the Banjo out of the acoustic mic and vise verse. There is a little boost in the low mids that needed to be EQed out but if you have an EQ then its not a problem. They are bigger than I thought they would be with a good quality build, and the stereo blumline bar is built like a tank. They also really look good. I ran them through UA610s and used alot of gain on each channel so make sure you have preamp with lots of gain or get the cloudlifter thingy. The only thing that scares me is the clips in the shock mounts. They hold the mics fine even upside down but not as firm as I would hope and if one of these drops its going back to the shop for a new ribbon.

These mics make an excellent addition to my collection. They have a dark vintage sound which sounds great for room-mic'ed drums, guitar cabs, percussion, and bass. The build quality is solid and the blumlein bar is a great way to get unique stereo captures.

Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

We're using the Fat Head Mics to record an indipendent full lenght. Especially on guitars, they're great!Very nice sound, deep, a little dark, very smooth and warm. As a room mic, it sounds nice too. For the voice, it's particular and interesting, but not for everyone. I think on the guitars, clean and with overdrive and/or distortion, it's the best use. However, for the price you can buy them they are an absolute steal! Don't miss if you like warm sound in a variety of possible situations

Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

These mics did not astound me. They did not turn my $250 Epiphone acoustic into a $2500 Gibson J45. I did not sound like Frank Sinatra. They did not improve my gas mileage.

BUT; they sounded awesome. These are not the Ferrari or Mercedes of the mic world; these are WORKHORSES. They sound rich, thick, syrupy and smooth while sounding clear and articulate. They ROCK on guitar cabs and sound fantastic in blumlein for singer/songwriter in-the-room sound.

If you want a $4000 mic that gets used once in a while, this ain't it. If you want a great value on a pair of mics that you'll use on every single session, these babies are it!

Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

The ribbon mic has had a real strong comeback over the years from when I started recording on a vintage RCA (1940's RCA). I feel the sonic finger print is even more needed as digital becomes to clean. I do find the lower output not a problem with good pre's. I use these on cymbals because of the sizzle type sound that sometimes can be produced by my condenser overheads. I have used other brands and all mics have there place. A good thing to remember is placement. The bar is an added bonus as I will use that with other matched mic sets.

Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

I had the good luck of a bandmate that owned a pair of these, so I was able to try them out in different settings before recently purchasing a pair of my own.
They tend to be a bit 'dark' for my preference on guitar cabs, vocals, etc. But are worth their weight in gold for drum overheads. I've always found condensers for drum overheads to be overly harsh, but these Fatheads are some of the most transparent mics I've found for drums- the drum sounds like the drum (or cymbal...), period, leaving you endless options for processing after the fact.

Comments about Cascade Microphones Fat Head Ribbon Microphone Pair with Blumlein Bar (Brown/Gold):

I bought these mics for my semi-professional studio about a month ago. In that time i have used them on vocals, acoustic guitar, and electric guitar. They make mellow vocals warm and sultry while acoustic guitars shine. However if your recording a loud singer or heavy vocals I'd suggest something else. What first attracted me to these mics was the price. two ribbon microphones for such a low price? They must be junk. But after doing several weeks of research and talking to people that had them I decided to make the purchase. I'm so glad I did! The only downside to these mics is that they are ribbons and the user must be careful in handling them so as not to damage the coils. So avoid plosives when doing vocal takes, this is where pop-filters come in handy. Cascade Mics definitely stepped up.
