Amazing microphones but beware. These do not lie!

Comments about FAT HEAD II Ribbon Microphones (Brown Body and Gold Grill, Stock Transformer):

Ok so I read that these were great and after having them over a month I have discovered that these mic's can be brutally honest. How so? Well they sound great on my clean guitar amp recordings but my distoreted guitar parts sound terrible. Problem with the mic's? NO! Problem with my settings and EQ. I can say with certainty that these just may be the best microphones I have bought in twenty years. I have had the Toyer 121 and no these are not the same but honestly to me even better because for the price you can get like 6 of these. Trust me two is enough unless you are recording a lot of drums and intstruments then get more. I can say that I inquired from Cascade the difference between model I and II and the only difference is the size. Ribbon and SPL are exactly the same. What made the difference to me was the beefier shockmounts. Buy these as a pair you wont regret it. Now if I can only get a great distorted guitar sound....

    On Overheads or on guitars.

It's a good product just a bit dark. But with a little EQ everything works fine

FAT SOUNDS FROM FAT HEAD II RIBBON

Comments about FAT HEAD II Ribbon Microphones (Brown Body and Gold Grill, Stock Transformer):

WOW! First let me say, I purchased the Cascade Fat Head IIs for the purpose of recording 'live" concert and choral groups. I've used them on guitar amps and drums too. For the concert band and choral groups, it sounded great. Warm with a little bit of self distortion using the Blumlein Bar in X/Y, the recordings came out great. I ran 4 sets of mics in different miking techniques. I used a matched pair of MXL 603S in ORTF, matched pair of OKTAVA MK-012-01s in NOS, a pair of AKG 414s in M/S, then the pair of Cascade Fat Head IIs in X/Y using the Blumlein Bar. These are my go-to mics and the techniques they sound best in. Hands down, the Cascade mics sounded best in the last few 'live' recordings we did A/B'ing the tracks with the same performances. Lots of depth and warmth straight to recording without any type of enhancements. The brass instruments didn't sound spitty, and the woodwinds still cut through without making your ears bleed. The reason I didn't give it 5 stars, is that it's extremely warm, it may appear muddy sounding compared to the M/S technique with the AKGs which all the Band/Choir Directors chose as their second favorite. But the depth you got from the Cascade set up made up for the missing high end. We record for 10 hours almost straight through, first time I had less ear fatigue, than using the ORTF, NOS, or M/S methods and the respective mics I've listed. Guitars and Drums sounded great in our studio. Still needed a condenser mic to capture some highs, but its low self distortion and added warmth to those instruments made EQ-ing very simple and minimal. Fastest guitar tones I've ever recorded. I used the Fat Head as a room mic on the Drums to for added depth, sounded pretty good. I highly recommend these mics and the price isn't bad either.

The mics were larger than I thought. They come in nice suitcase that protects them well. They sound great! Very nuanced and noise free.

These mics are great for the price! I received the box and it came with a blumlein bar that the website didn't mention. That was a plus. The sound is really good and works well as stereo room mics for drums and great as a second mic on a guitar cab. I highly recommend these!
