  • Connect Up to 5 Secure VPN Tunnels
  • Secure IPsec Site-to-Site tunnels
  • IPsec Secure Access for Remote Clients
  • Total of 8 LAN Gigabit Ethernet Ports
  • Windows, Mac, Linux Compatible

House in a rugged metal unit, the Prosafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall Router from Netgear is an excellent network solution for securely providing wired Internet access within a LAN, between remote LANs, and to remote clients. The router features one WAN Ethernet 10/100/1000 port for establishing a wired connection to your DSL or cable modem. It also features a total of eight LAN Ethernet 10/100/1000 ports for establishing high-speed wired connections to servers, Wireless-N access points, desktop PCs, and anything else that's Ethernet-enabled on your LAN network. For establishing connections that aren't within your LAN, this router supports up to 5 simultaneous IPsec VPN tunnels as well as multiple VPN pass-through. You can setup secure IPsec site-to-site tunnels for connecting from one LAN over the Internet to another LAN in a completely different location (you'll need a VPN Firewall Router connected to both networks to do so). You can also allow remote users to securely connect to your network (remote users will need to use VPN client software, such as the included trial version of ProSafe VPN Client Professional).

In terms of security, you can customize the firewall rules on your network. In particular, the router utilizes an SPI Firewall, DoS attack protection, a configurable DMZ port, email reporting, IKE authentication, and SYSLOG. In addition, it can integrate with network monitoring tools via SNMP. Beyond security, the router is easy to setup and can be quickly configured to suit your networking needs.

Comments about Netgear Prosafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall Router:

EXCELLENT Product, but I always rely on Netgear!I connect 4 computers & a Magic Jack to this router. All wired connections!Very small with great activity leds. When initially hooked up (took 5 minutes), I received over twice the up/down bpps. However, when I bypassed the router and went direct to my NEW Netgear cable modem (Comcast), I tested @ 56bpps down & 12bpps up!!! I need to call Netgear to try and tweak the modem & router. Also, I need to check if old CAT5/RJ45 cables could be part of the problem??If you folks @ Netgear read this, please get in touch with me...Rich Russom. I am registered, and in your system.I recommend Netgear Highly!rich.

Comments about Netgear Prosafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall Router:

I required a new wired router to replace a 'consumer' one produced by Linksys which lasted about 3 years. I've finally learned my lesson on Linksys (short-lived and questionable speed for wired and wireless router) The Netgear router is noticeable faster than the prior equipment and has a built-in firewall capability. I find wired/ethernet connections significantly faster, particularly at distance from a router. We still use one wireless on the system, but that's primarily for the smart phone and a laptop. Lights on unit indicate speed (by color change). It is compact. The set-up CD isn't really needed.

Comments about Netgear Prosafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall Router:

I had a 4-port 100 Mb router and a hub to connect 5 machines together and to our 100 Mb fiber optic internet connection -- slow, extra steps for some of the machines, extra equipment, tangle of wires, big mess.

This router set up in about 15 minutes, including setting IP's (I don't use DHCP on either end), setting up NAT, making sure my outgoing connection to client machines worked, etc. It's a much neater setup below my desk, and the internet is much snappier.

Product arrived in about 3 days and I hardly missed a beat in swapping out the old stuff for the new.

I highly recommend both product and retailer.

Comments about Netgear Prosafe 8-Port Gigabit VPN Firewall Router:

Bought the FVS318G to beef-up my network security and to replace a smaller gigabit switch. The firewall feature set is strong - everything that I need to configure is available and admin is straight forward. Up and down stream performance through the firewall is very good.

The box was delivered with firmware version 3.06 and suffered multiple "lock-ups" requiring restarts over the course of the first week. Netgear support supplied a beta version of the firmware for me to try. I have been running the beta version for a couple of days with no problems. Interacting with Netgear support was painless, but slow.
