Comments about Williams Sound Pocketalker Ultra System Duo Pack:

I purchased this as a hearing aid alternative for my father since the one offered by his doctor frequently stops working, therefore having to opt for a new one every few months or so. According to my dad, he mentions that the Pocketalker volume controls are easier to manage and adjust, whereas his doctor's issued device can be annoying since he needs to reach around to find the volume control. My dad clips the Pocketalker to his belt or shirt-pocket and he tells me that it's good enough for him to listen to conversations with his buddies. With the advantage of having a free-handling microphone, he can focus his hearing to a specific area. Another thing worth mentioning is that the microphone is sensitive as it is left at the volume of 2 to 3 the most (10 is the highest) as he can hear conversations from across the room. Another great thing about the Pocketalker is that it takes 2 AAA batteries, whereas hearing aides need a specialty battery that can cost a lot of money, and is sometimes hard to find. The Pocketalker can stay on for over hundreds of hours before the batteries die, which makes this a no-brainer choice to buy. My only negative feedback to the Pocketalker is that it is only a mono-output audio device, which means that if you were to replace the earphones or headphones with a generic-stereo ear/headphone, only ONE side will work. This means that if the device's ear/headphone stops working, you'll need to go to a specialty electronic store to buy a mono-ear/headphone (a headphone that looks like a stereo-headphone but uses a 3.5 mono-input jack), or you could cut the stereo-earphone and use one side of it. This is a minor negative feedback, but thinking of those who needs two hearing aides, this might be a useful update for Pocketalker. My dad has been using this for over a month now and still thinks it's the best thing in the world.

Comments about Williams Sound Pocketalker Ultra System Duo Pack:

There are two Pocketalker's the Pro and the Ultra. The Ultra is by far the superior unit. Most older people suffer from presbycusis or age-related high frequency hearing loss. This hearing aid, the Ultra is designed to address this common problem. My hearing loss is rated as severe, without a hearing aid I hear little and understand nothing so I have to wear a hearing aid 16 hours a day.The Ultra has a very effective Tone Control. This control actually controls the frequency response of the amplifier which is very important and you will use it often to compensate for your surroundings. For example in an automobile if you select the low frequencies all you will hear is low frequency road noise. But if you select the higher frequency response the road noise will disappear and you will hear others talking. The Ultra also has AGC or Automatic Gain Control. The way it works is that with any high noise the volume is automatically reduced. But there are two things you should change right away and that is the headphone and the microphone. The most important item to change is the headphone. What they send is dreadful. What I have used for years is the Panasonic RP-HJE120S In-Ear Headphone (earbuds) ($6.23). These are very rugged, have good frequency response and will fit tightly and comfortably in the ears. With these earbuds and the supplied microphone and I can listen to a TV 20 ft distant with the TV volume set at normal level. So you do not need a 12 ft cord to hear TV just some good earbuds. The earbuds are stereo so you will also need a mono to stereo adapter such as the C2G / Cables to Go 03174 ($4.99). All of these items are available from [*]. I do not wear the earbuds with the wires hanging down my face. I get T-shirts with a pocket to carry my hearing aid. The earbud wire is hidden by my shirt and I feed my left ear by bringing the wire up the right side of my neck around to the back of my neck and into my left ear and then the same procedure for my right ear. Then there is the microphone. Others have noted how you pick up noise when the microphone rubs against a shirt or other garment. The microphone is a good one its just the style that is bad. What is needed is a microphone much like the TV news anchors use (a lavalier microphone with alligator clip). This type of microphone comes with about a three foot cord and is supplied with a alligator clip that can be attached to to the front of your shirt/blouse and in the winter to the outside of your coat. When I am in a restaurant I often place it in the center of the table. There are many to choose from and I have several. I like the Olympus ME-15 Microphone ($22.99) and the Olympus ME-52W Noise Canceling Microphone ($16.60). These will directly plug in and replace the one that comes with the Pocketalker. On the ME-52W the cord has a plug on the end so you can exchange microphones if you wish. That is, you can unplug the Olympus microphone and plug in the Pocketalker microphone still using the alligator clip. The bottom line is that I have a draw full of in-the-ear and behind-the-ear hearing aids that I spent thousands for and none are as good as the Ultra.

Comments about Williams Sound Pocketalker Ultra System Duo Pack:

This worked well for an elderly extremely hard-of-hearing relative of mine, who lost her hearing aids before a family visit. I purchased and brought the Pocketalker and it actually did enable her to hear and participate in our conversation without hearing aids.
I'm not saying she had 100% hearing with the Pocketalker, but her hearing and comprehension with this seemed even better than with her hearing aids (and, by the way, her hearing aids are at a level where we've been told they couldn't be improved any further). She got best results using the headphones rather than the in-ear earpiece, but as she wasn't used to wearing headphones she kept removing them. At times we also found that the person speaking needed to hold the microphone closer to their face to improve comprehension. She's not able to manage using this device on her own, but I hope to try this out for radio/tv listening when I visit next -- something which she has been not able to do for several years.
For someone who's able to manage the use of this on their own, I can see where it could be very helpful in a variety of situations. The bottom line is it works VERY WELL and I found the sound quality very impressive when I tested it myself. I hope to use it with my relative to enhance our interaction, even when she has her hearing aids.

Comments about Williams Sound Pocketalker Ultra System Duo Pack:

My purchase of the Pocketalker was a blessing. My wife can't wait for me to put it on and turn it on each day, when she is trying to converse with me. She has a high pitched voice, which is difficult for me to hear. With this device, she comes in loud and clear. Browsing thru the B & H catalog, is what gave me the idea that they might have something far superior to the normal earbud type device, that a person sometimes spends thousands of dollars on such, and they still are not happy with the results of the expensive earbud device. I have also tried the earbud type, some of which have a frequency adjustment, but still lack performance. One drawbck is that certain noises are amplified to where they are objectionable such as a burst of laughter from persons sitting at a table next to you! Also clatter of dishes, etc can be amplified to become intolerant, and the volume control must be turned down for a while. I prefer the use of the headphones, which some persons may not like, but to me are preferable. I just wish that there was more adjustment to decrease the length of the headband, to keep it in place better. Many people have expressed an interest in it, and I highly recommend it. It would also be desirable to have a set of optional headphones that have the resilient ring to go around the ears. I consider it a definite replacement for a hearing aid.

I bought this product for my hearing impaired Mother. Her hearing aid breaks at least twice a year and has to go back for repairs that can last two weeks or longer. She also has hearing aid fitting problems due to excessive ear wax and during this time the hearing aid whistles constantly until the wax is cleared by the physician. This caused many communication problems. With the pocket talker I no longer worry that there will be arguments caused by lack of understanding and I'm very relieved.
