The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony is the second generation of large-aperture telephoto zoom lenses incorporating Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilizer) anti-shake system. It offers the equivalent of shooting at shutter speeds 3 to 4 stops slower than without OS, thus allowing handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. Its HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing.
It features a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 that remains constant throughout the zoom range, making it incredibly valuable when shooting in low light situations such as wedding or other events. It is also great when shooting fast-moving subjects such as sports, when fast shutter speeds are needed to capture fleeting moments. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is fast and versatile and at a length of 7.8 (19.8cm) will be a tool that seldom sees the inside of your camera bag. The lens comes with a petal-type lens hood plus an adapter to extend its length for users with APS-c cameras.
Note: This lens is optimized for full-frame Sony DSLRs and may also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors but it will increase focal length to about 100-300mm with most cameras.
Note: When using the OS function of the lens with a camera which incorporates a stabilizer unit, please turn the camera's stabilizer unit off.
Note! Optical Stabilizer (OS) function will not work with film SLR cameras

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony:
I recently used this zoom at a high school graduation. The photos were shot from the stands to the field during the evening. The lighting was bad with lots of dark areas from shadows caused by buildings. The photos that I took were clear and not grainy like I experience with my old zoom. I'm sure with more practice this zoom will give me even better photos.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony:
I bought this lens to shoot baseball under the lights. I use it on a Sony A77 and have been able to freeze action using higher ISOs like 1600 and 3200 with very good results. The focus is faster than my Sigma 120-400 that I use for the same purpose but during day shooting. I use the 70-200 mainly from the dugout, behind the backstop and along the baselines. It doesn't have enough reach for the outfielders, so I try to get those shots during day games with my longer lens. All around it is a very serviceable lens for my purpose. I prefer it to the 120-400 for its lighter weight and faster focusing. I can hand hold it just fine, but usually I use a monopod to shoot games.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony:
I got his lens because the Sony G 70 to 200 lens does not have Image stabilizer in it. Also I use it for video too and it tracks focus very well. The Sony zoom lost focus as soon as you change the zoom setting.Tracking autofocus was just as good as the Sony . The manual focus is very nice and does not shift the image when you reverse direction. build is fine and when I tested it against my Nikon 70to200 VR (Version 1) the Sigma was sharper and had more contrast. I use this lens on a NEX6 and FS 700 with the LA2 adapter. Lens hood a little plastic with no lock latch like the nikons.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony:
Using this lens in alpha mount with a77. Great image quality at all fstops and focal lengths I tried although it might be worth mentioning I gave up on pixel peeping a while ago. That being said, I am very pleased with its iq, af and is in all situations I tried. As expected, this lens shines in normal lighting conditions but is fast enough in most difficult situations as well. I also find the in-lens image stabilization better than what the camera provides.
I wish it had weather sealing, hopefully the next iteration will bring that. A focus switch would be nice too.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony:
very happy with the speed and clarity of this lens. I looked at the equivalent versions from Sony and Tamron and this offered a good balance of price / performance. The zoom control is in a much more natural position and speed of focus is much better than Tamron. While you will never do better with compatibility by sticking with the same brand name, I could not justify the extra price. I am happy with this lens and would recommend it to others

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony:
This lens makes the Tamron 70-200 feel like a toy. Don't get me wrong though, the Tamron puts out some great images, but the Sigma construction is superior. I tested the OS on my Sony A77 and it definitely outperforms the in-camera stabilization. You can see the stabilization occurring in the viewfinder. Something I never noticed with in-camera stabilization.
As other reviews may have mentioned it's very sharp, but it's a bit soft at 200/2.8. Stopping down to F4 brings it back in line.
Autofocus is very fast and silent. A huge improvement over the Tamron.
Macro ability is not a strong suit, but good enough. It's a telephoto zoom lens amirite?

I use this lense on a daily basis for events such as sports, church, etc. It balances well with my Sony a77 camera. I have not had it long enough to give any negatives. I really do like the lense even when I compare it to the Sony lense that sells for more.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Sony:
Yes, this lens is heavy and big, but it is well worth it. The pictures are all sharp and f/2.8 is great for bokeh and low light photography. the os is great, it amazes me the the shakiness stops when the shutter button is halfed press. It's front heavy on the a55, but thats already a small camera the lens is huge on it but I like the feeling. aspc senors dont really need the extender, its just more of a hassle to bring around I leave in the carrying case it came with.
