The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon is the second generation of large-aperture telephoto zoom lenses incorporating Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilizer) anti-shake system. It offers the equivalent of shooting at shutter speeds 3 to 4 stops slower than without OS, thus allowing handheld telephoto zoom shooting even in poorly lit conditions. Its HSM ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focusing.

It features a large maximum aperture of f/2.8 that remains constant throughout the zoom range, making it incredibly valuable when shooting in low light situations such as wedding or other events. It is also great when shooting fast-moving subjects such as sports, when fast shutter speeds are needed to capture fleeting moments. The 70-200mm f/2.8 is fast and versatile and at a length of 7.8 (19.8cm) will be a tool that seldom sees the inside of your camera bag. The lens comes with a petal-type lens hood plus an adapter to extend its length for users with APS-c cameras.

Note: This lens is optimized for full-frame Nikon DSLRs and may also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors but it will increase focal length to about 100-300mm with most cameras.

Note: When using the OS function of the lens with a camera which incorporates a stabilizer unit, please turn the camera's stabilizer unit off.

Note! Optical Stabilizer (OS) function will not work with film SLR cameras

Sigma's New APO 70-200mm F2.8 EX DG OS HSM is the second generation of this large aperture telephoto zoom lens now incorporating Sigma's Optical Stabilization (OS) anti-shake system. It uses two sensors inside the lens to detect vertical and horizontal movement of the camera. It works by moving an optical image stabilizing lens group, to effectively compensate for camera shake.
Two FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass elements, which have the performance equal to expensive fluorite glass, and three SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass elements, combine to provide excellent reduction of aberrations and image quality.
The rounded 9 blade diaphragm creates an attractive blur to the out of focus images (bokeh).
This compact lens is only 7.8" (19.81 cm) in length.
The Super Multi-Layer lens coating reduces flare ghosting and assures high image quality throughout the entire zoom range.
The exterior of this lens is EX-finished to denote the superior build and optical quality, and to enhance its appearance.
The lens DG designation translates to large-aperture lenses with wide angles and short minimum focusing distances. With an abundance of peripheral illumination, they are ideal lenses for Digital SLR Cameras while retaining suitability for traditional 35mm SLRs.

    The good:
    - Sharp at all focal lengths even at f2.8 wide open.
    - Fast and accurate autofocus.
    - Quiet and very useful OS (optical stabilizer).
    - Good and solid built quality.
    - Both autofocus and OS remain active with both 1.4X and 2X teleconverters.
    - A bit lighter than expected.

    The bad:
    - PRICE!!! Pretty much double the price of the previous 70-200mm f2.8 lens.
    - Longer than its predecessor, which makes it VERY HARD to fit into backpacks where the previous model slips right in.
    - Still no weather sealing (on a top of the line pro lens).
    - Dual lens-hood not practical at all.

The lens is very-very sharp with excellent (!!!) image quality! DO NOT believe otherwise, regardless what kind of a review you read from a "pro" website! They are biased and completely wrong! The one thing I'm not certain to be a good idea; that the zoom ring is now in front of the focus ring, which takes some time to get used to, and creates a potential for accidental manual override of the focus ring while zooming, which may result in blurry images. This however, is only a possibility, which never happened to me so far.

The dual lens-hood solution is only practical if you are in a situation where your really, and I mean, REALLY need the extended hood to prevent unwanted reflections, but other than that, I would not recommend it. It is cumbersome and for me, pretty much useless, so I never use it at all.

The most important features, such as: the brand new OS and the brand new lens elements, most certainly deliver the "goods"! The images are beautiful, the colors, tone, sharpness, even wide open at f2.8 are absolutely fantastic!

So if you want a brand new design, new elements, great OS, fast autofocus in a pro-line lens, this is the one! It is an excellent, excellent lens, which I highly recommend!

So, go and get it (if you can afford it).

"NEW YORK" before me is right about quite a few things, but I had a big exception in my experience. I shot for 2 weeks using my Nikon D300 in France after getting the lens a month ago. I wasn't happy with the sharpness of my images shot at f2.8. I found the results way too soft. Sharpness at the focal lengths I used was much better stopped down to something like f4 or even f5.6 for example. I proved that with quite a few shots. This lens is an improvement over previous Sigma 70-200 versions, but for $1700 it falls short of the Nikkor 70-200 VRII by a lot when it comes to sharpness at wide open apertures. For that reason I dropped my rating.

No complaints. I read a review that the focusing motor is loud. I don't believe that is the case. I use it for my son's high school basketball games and I'm very happy with it.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I have owned the previous version of this lens, non os, and I have used the Nikon 70-200, version 1 and 2. For what I needed from this kind of lens it just didn't make sense to buy the Nikon, so, I went with the Sigma once again. My copy is sharp at f/2.8 and at all focal lengths.

I do find that it will hunt a little bit in very dim light and the af is not as fast as the Nikon - the Sigma does NOT have slow af, it's just that the Nikon is very fast and accurate and TWICE the price.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I purchased this lens instead of the Nikon, and I have yet to be disappointed. The only discernible difference is the quality of the glass, this one already has as a very minor scratch, meanwhile my similarly treated Nikon lenses that I have owned for longer do not. It could be a coincidence, either way, I am still very happy with the lens, especially considering it is half the price. I do a lot of concert shooting with it, both photo and video. It handles low light well, although the auto focus is basically useless in low light, so I keep it on manual. I also always keep it on a monopod, it is pretty heavy without it.

I mainly work with prime lens but sometimes I need more reach. I purchased this lens to replace an older sigma version and after testing it I am pleased with the results. It is better than the older version in both focus speed and sharpness. The only negative is that in very dim light it will hunt a little bit.

I purchased this to replace my Nikon 70-300 f4.5 to have a faster zoom lens. This lens is awesome! I will mainly use this lens for wildlife/pet/youth sports photography and so far the images it produces is very crisp and the focusing is spot on. It is a tad bit heavy but that's what the mounting collar is for :-)

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I bought this lens because I began photographing some events, and for shooting indoor I needed a fast lens. I don't have any previous experience with similar lenses but I'm flattered from the results. I use it on a Nikon D800. I found the autofocus really fast and silent. I'm impressed from the OS (Optical Stabilizer), it made it really easy to shoot free hands at 1/60s while zooming all the way out to 200mm. I am more than satisfied both for outdoor sunny/overcast conditions and lowlight.

The manual focus wheel is also really smooth and clean.

The only bothering thing so far is that you can't zoom if you have the hood mounted in the backward position. Not a big deal though.

In my opinion it is really worth the price, much lower than Nikon's similar lenses.

As a 'Prosumer' as B&H would call me, I did not want to spend the money for the Nikon version of this lens yet I wanted to have the same features in a good lens. I am growing a p/t business doing portraiture work and needed some quality without taking out a second mortgage ;-)
This lens meets all my needs and the picture quality is fantastic...in fact, I don't see why anyone would buy the Nikon when lenses like this are available. Now....I have not used the Nikon version but for what I do I am totally happy and very pleased!

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

On my Nikon the Sigma 70-200mm lens is sharp, has fast autofocus and nearly silent. Though heavy it is quickly becoming a favorite lens in my camera bag.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I have been covering a College Summer league baseball team with an older 80-200 f/2.8 lens since May 2014. Due to lighting conditions and the used of 800 to 2000 ISO that was being used to stop the action of a runner sliding into home plate or stealing second base. The Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM has allowed me to capture the action being handed held.
The only drawback is the auto focus does not work on the 1. 7x or 2x telcovener but will work on manual to give the extra telephoto boost.

I use this product primary for getting in close to objects for my video company. Overall I love this lens for my videos and photography. I have got some nice close up of bees in mid flight. Great lens overall. I would also recommend this for 2nd shoots of weddings and events.

Comments about Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 EX DG APO OS HSM for Nikon:

I have been saving for a 70-200 lens for the past 18 months reading reviews on Nikon, Sigma and Tamron. Based on what I read and results, comments of others that own the lenses and an evaluation of the cost/benefit by price I chose the Sigma for my Nikon D610. After two weeks of use I couldn't be happier with my choice. The Nikon would have been great but I didn't want to spend the extra $1,000 after looking at some others results. I have shot over 1,000 images of baseball, many with the addition of the 1.4x teleconverter I purchased as well, and the images are sharp with great contrast. The focusing was very fast with no issues on back focusing that I had read about. Yes, this lens is heavy and took some getting use too, and more push ups every day, but that is what I expected when I decided to purchase a fast telephoto zoom. I am going to start shooting more portratits in the coming months. My conclusion after the first two weeks is - buy it! It is a great value with very comprobale results to the Nikon and it leaves you money left over for other equipment you may need.

Lens is takt sharp on my D600. I am very pleased with this lens. The only reason I did not give this lens 5 stars is due to the refocus that seems to happen each time i slightly depress the shutter without changing composition? Not sure what thats about but still great pictures.
