The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens is an incredibly versatile, lightweight, and compact lens designed specifically for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors. The lens has a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It features a construction of 17 elements in 13 groups with glass that corrects for flare, ghosting and all types of aberrations. It produces high contrast and sharp images throughout the zoom range even at its maximum aperture.
Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilization) feature allows you to shoot at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. This means your images will look sharper, even when shooting without a tripod in low existing light or at maximum range with a flash. This lens is also equipped with Sigma's Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) which provides for fast and quiet autofocusing.
The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is ideal for many photo opportunities particularly landscapes and portraits, but with its wide focal range and a close focusing distance down to 11" (28cm) you can capture images with unique perspectives. It will quickly become one of the most important lenses in your gear bag.
Note! Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

I'm a simi-pro photographer. I have 39 years under my belt. I am using two Canon 40D mainly shooting wedding, family portraits and model shoots. I gently shook the Sigma 17-50mm prior to mounting it on my 40D, I heard the clicking sound as many of you've. The lens is light compared to the canon lens I use. I did have to get use to the focus ring rotating during auto focus, ensuring that my fingers was not in it way. I imediately took over 150 shots with my Sigma 17-50mm lens and all I could say is Wow, straight out the box. The pictures are amazing. They are all in focus and sharp colors, no purple fringes, sharp from f2.8 up to f16, no vin, and all 150 photos is a keeper. The rings all rotated with ease. The Sigma have a zoom lock that can only be lock in 17mm position but while unlock holding the canon 40d downward I never experience any lens creep. I notice a few complaints about the lens not being sharp while using a tripod. The instruction that came with the Sigma lens tell you to turn the OS off when using a tripod. I took some shots with OS on and some with it off. The shots were all keepers with the OS on however the Shots with the OS off gave the the big wow factor. Maybe I got lucky with the lens I receive, and I'm very impress with the Sigma 17-50mm F2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens. This is my first time trying Sigma lens I'm quite happy that it worked out for me.

I got this lens for my 7D as an alternative to the Canon 17-55, which seems to me is way overpriced. Liked it very much and worked well when I got it: very sharp, well built, nice feel and just OK auto focus. Very good image quality overall. After two months of moderate use the auto focus is working erratically at best. Most of the times it stays hunting back and forth forever and is unable to lock focus. On the occasions that it does lock focus, sometimes it is accurate some times is way off. I guess any lens copy can have a failure once in a while but it seems that this problem is fairly common among many users of this particular lens. Worst of all, the failure usually shows up after the lens has been used for a while, so it can´t be detected when you get it and the return period is no longer available. Furthermore, the lens value in the used market is not very good. In conclusion, Sigma remains as an unreliable manufacturer with too many quality issues. It is a shame because IN PAPER this lens is a great alternative for APS-C bodies.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
This lens is great. I haven't touched my Canon 50mm 1.4 since I bought this. Very bright and warm color, nice and sharp. My only complaint is that the lens is a little tough to focus because the focus ring is pretty touchy. Other than that, highly recommended.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
Great lens all the way through the focal range. Impressive @ 2.8 in good light and tack sharp at f4. The OS really does work and has really helped when shooting indoors. My lens did, however, have front focusing/AF hunting issues...a recurring and known issue with Sigma lenses...so I knew before I bought it that some focus issues were possible. I sent it to Sigma and they fixed it right up.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
I waited a long time, thinking this lens might not be that much better than a kit lens. Finally, I needed the 2.8 bad enough to go for it, and got a lot more than that. The OS works well and the autofocus is great on my 60d. The contrast and color saturation are much better as well. At half the price of the Canon, I rate it 5 stars.

I really wanted to like this lens. I have Canon 17-40 f4 L, but got this for the extra stop. The lens arrived with spots, the focus ring was very hard. The image quality okay. I decided to return it.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
This little lens is a gem. Very sharp, fast, well built, well balanced with the 7D and overall a fantastic value for the money (comes with a hood that Canon wants to charge [$] for). I've rented the Canon 17-55 and I could not justify spending twice as much for what is almost the same quality. I'm not a pixel peeper but the images are very sharp and have nice colors.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
I have found this lens to be a great addition to my canon 7d. My canon 18-55 broke and bought this one to replace it. It is faster, sharper, and produces noticeably better images. The stabilization also works very well for video (although I am new to video in a dslr).
Cons?: It's has a slight vignetting at it widest angle. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't for that.
I do not consider the reverse zoom a negative. It took about 15 minutes to get use to.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
I used the Sigma 17-50 at a wedding because of its 2.8 capability but was disappointed because of its depth of field not resembling what a Canon would look like at a 2.8 mm. At 2.8 the photos looked more like 5.6. I have been shooting weddings for about 3 years and decided to give this lens a shot but it was returned right after the wedding. The photos were noisy at medium to low light but nice in daylight at an f stop of about 5.6 and up. The lens did poor in low light.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
Bought it to replace my kit lens (18-55mm), and don't really regret. It's clearly superior.
I'm impressed how it works in low lights environments.
If I'd a criticism I just don't like how stiff is the zoom control, it could be WAY smooth.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
I use this lens for videography, and the constant 2.8 is awesome in low lighting. It gives me super sharp detail and when I zoom in and out my lighting settings don't change. The focus ring is very short and super sensitive, which is good for me when i need to focus quickly. The zoom ring is pretty stiff though, so you have to put a great deal of effor in order to get a steady zoom. All in all great lens, the price even dropped after I bought it and B&H refunded me the difference.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Canon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:
I am very happy with the Sigma 17-50. Being a previous owner of a Canon 17-55 I can say that the build quality is better on the Sigma. While both take great images the Sigma has a warmer tone and a bit more contrast. The size of the Sigma is also a plus. If you are debating between the two, I reccomend the Sigma hands down.
