The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens is an incredibly versatile, lightweight, and compact lens designed specifically for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors. The lens has a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It features a construction of 17 elements in 13 groups with glass that corrects for flare, ghosting and all types of aberrations. It produces high contrast and sharp images throughout the zoom range even at its maximum aperture.

Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilization) feature allows you to shoot at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. This means your images will look sharper, even when shooting without a tripod in low existing light or at maximum range with a flash. This lens is also equipped with Sigma's Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) which provides for fast and quiet autofocusing.

The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is ideal for many photo opportunities particularly landscapes and portraits, but with its wide focal range and a close focusing distance down to 11" (28cm) you can capture images with unique perspectives. It will quickly become one of the most important lenses in your gear bag.

Note: Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

This lens is for use with digital cameras with APS-C size sensors only. 1
The DC designation on the barrel means that this is a special lens designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size (APS-C) of the image sensor of your digital SLR. Its specialized design gives this lens the ideal properties for digital cameras, including a compact size and lightweight construction.
The 17-50mm f/2.8 offers Sigma's OS System (Optical Stabilization) that allows shooting at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would be otherwise possible, for sharper handheld photography even in low-light situations.
Constructed with 17 elements in 13 groups, it features FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass which is the highest level low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. This glass has a performance equal to fluorite glass which has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. FLD glass offers superior optical performance, equal to fluorite, at an affordable price.
Its HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet & high-speed auto focus.

I use this lens for low light photography indoors and outdoors. As well as night photography, and walk around photography. It has a great zoom range, and is very diverse. This lens and the Sigma 8-16mm make a great pair.Compared to a kit lens, this Sigma has better image quality in low light, better ISO performance, and much faster auto focus. Also. the OS (Vibration Reduction), is very effective, and makes a huge difference in slow shutter speed and low light. The BAD: no 6 year warranty like Tamron. Not so BAD: it's compact but heavy. The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is an upgrade for those who want to unleash the greater potential of their Nikon D3200 that are limited by the kit lens.

From reading reviews, you'll get the sense that this is a solid lens. My own impressions were that it's sharp, even wide open, and works well throughout the zoom and aperture range. It's shockingly heavy for such a short zoom but not to the point of annoyance.

The biggest failing is that there seems to be a lot of variation between copies.Mine, though sharp, had more than ten visible liquid spots behind the front element which were obvious when set to a small aperture (I tested on f22). The look kinda like sensor dust spots but immediately disappeared when I switched lenses.

I'm holding my breath on a replacement copy but make sure you test your copy as soon as you receive.

    Exceptional performance

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

Fast, sharp wide open with stellar performance after f/4. Did not have to fine tune my copy on my D7100. Build quality is great, zoom & focus rings are smooth and nicely damped. IQ is excellent with great contrast and a mellow quality that I like. Image stabilization is quiet, autofocus is very fast. The autofocus stays active for about 30 sec or so, after you shoot, potentially draining the battery faster. The focus ring moves during autofocus and you cant overide the autofocus either. These points aside, an excellent lens for a modest investment.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

This is the first non OEM Lens and I will say I'm impressed the build quality is really good and the Image quality is right up there to Nikon and that says a lot. My two small negatives was no weather gasket and you have to hold your hand very close to the body when using AF or you will jam it up. No deal breakers. Great lens

I love it using it on D7100 to produce really sharp images. Feels like a quality build to me but what do I know I'm just am enthusiast. Price was good as my budget is not very large.i give it 4 stars because it's my first non Nikon lens. If I could afford the Nikon version I'm sure I would like it better

The Sigma 17-50 OS lens was my first lens purchase outside of the kit lenses that came with my camera. The lens is tact sharp and is great in low light situations. I took this lens to a car show and it produced a handful of great pictures. This is the perfect walkaround lens. I did a ton of research before buying this lens and I am not disappointed at all.

Nikon make great lenses but this little jewel takes the cake its heavy but not as much as some of my 2.8 Nikon Lenses. Its versatility makes it a number 1 for my travels its going into the bag as I speak.
it works in almost every situation and makes itself most useful of my lens line up for my D7100 and D90

My review will echo many of the positive sentiments others have posted. I use mine about 75% video/25% still photography on a Nikon D7000 body. Simply put, it's a well-made lens, tough construction for the price, excellent DOF for video (as would be expected at f2.8), and the focus ring is wide and conveniently placed for manual focus work. Autofocus could be a bit faster, but it's not a big deal for me. Highly recommended

I purchased this lens a few months ago, and I have to say that it is an excellent lens. It is extremely sharp from 2.8 on! It has taken some changes to how I shoot though, because of the relatively limited focal range - I was a zoomer.

I dreamt of this glass on my camera for a very long time. Unfortunately at first, I bought a used one from another vendor. The used glass was focus hunting and also too noisy. So I returned it. A few days after B&H reduced the price of this glass by a hefty amount; and so I bought it from B&H without question. If I'm not mistaken, the price came to be less than the used one I returned. I'm so pleased with my purchase. The kit lens that came with my camera is now on the book shelf. This lens is now the proper lens for my camera.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I use this for just about everything. On a DX it's like a general purpose 24-70 on a FX. Along with the Sigma 8-116mm, it's a great pair. The only thing missing here is the Sigma 50-150 f/2.8 OS HSM APO.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I use this lens for both landscape and portrait photography. Great lens exceeded my expectations. Was worried when I initially decided to buy this lens due to some poor reviews. All doubts are cast out of my mind now. I have found nothing wrong with this lens so far.

I am a Nikon Enthusiast. This is my first Sigma Lens. It's really good. Works Well in Low Light. Only Problem. The Lock Button(seems to be Always Stuck). I just purchased this lens two weeks ago and was gonna send it back for that reason, but didn't want to go through the Hassle.
