The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens is an incredibly versatile, lightweight, and compact lens designed specifically for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors. The lens has a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It features a construction of 17 elements in 13 groups with glass that corrects for flare, ghosting and all types of aberrations. It produces high contrast and sharp images throughout the zoom range even at its maximum aperture.

Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilization) feature allows you to shoot at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. This means your images will look sharper, even when shooting without a tripod in low existing light or at maximum range with a flash. This lens is also equipped with Sigma's Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) which provides for fast and quiet autofocusing.

The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is ideal for many photo opportunities particularly landscapes and portraits, but with its wide focal range and a close focusing distance down to 11" (28cm) you can capture images with unique perspectives. It will quickly become one of the most important lenses in your gear bag.

Note! Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

This lens is for use with digital cameras with APS-C size sensors only. 1
The DC designation on the barrel means that this is a special lens designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size (APS-C) of the image sensor of your digital SLR. Its specialized design gives this lens the ideal properties for digital cameras, including a compact size and lightweight construction.
The 17-50mm f/2.8 offers Sigma's OS System (Optical Stabilization) that allows shooting at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would be otherwise possible, for sharper handheld photography even in low-light situations.
Constructed with 17 elements in 13 groups, it features FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass which is the highest level low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. This glass has a performance equal to fluorite glass which has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. FLD glass offers superior optical performance, equal to fluorite, at an affordable price.
Its HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet & high-speed auto focus.

Excellent standard zoom for Nikon DSLRs

Bought this lens after a lot of thought. The contenders were:

Bought this lens after a lot of thought. The contenders were:
    1. Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 (this lens)
    2. Nikon 17-55mm f/2.8
    3. Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 non-VC
    4. Tamron Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 VC

The Nikon I ruled out as it was too expensive for me; the Tamron VC I ruled out as credible review after credible review measured it less sharp than the non-VC version.

In the end, I picked this lens over the non-VC Tamron that was significantly cheaper. The entire premium (almost $300!) is for three things: (1)image stabilization (VR/OS); (2) faster, quieter AF; and (3) somewhat better build quality, as compared to the non-VC Tamron.

The Sigma 17-50mm turns out to be an excellent lens. Sharpness isn't everything in a lens, but this lens is competent- AF is fast and sure*, and can keep pace with moving subjects. The optical stabililization works. Finally, the lens is sharp at the pixel level and a match for the pixel-dense sensor of the D7000: portraits are resolved very sharply even wide open (at the pixel level) given the focus is spot-on.

There are three not-so-great things about this lens:
    1. *The asterisk from above... twice this lens just stopped autofocusing with my camera. A quick power-down of the camera body and twist unlock-remount resolved the issue both times. I would not blame the camera for this (works with every other lens) and contacts are clean; I think this is a camera-lens interface/firmware issue. Anyway I am keeping the lens, it's sharp/effective and meets my needs.
    2. The focus ring rotates... which is not so great, but I can live with it. As a spin-off, there's no full time manual AF override either.
    3. The lens will not AF in video mode... I am not shooting video with _this_ lens/camera combo, so can live with that. I have the same problem with my otherwise excellent Sigma 30mm f/1.4 lens.

All in all- a great lens, but you need to know the not-so-good points as well as the good points before you put down the money.

From reading reviews, you'll get the sense that this is a solid lens. My own impressions were that it's sharp, even wide open, and works well throughout the zoom and aperture range. It's shockingly heavy for such a short zoom but not to the point of annoyance.

The biggest failing is that there seems to be a lot of variation between copies.Mine, though sharp, had more than ten visible liquid spots behind the front element which were obvious when set to a small aperture (I tested on f22). The look kinda like sensor dust spots but immediately disappeared when I switched lenses.

I'm holding my breath on a replacement copy but make sure you test your copy as soon as you receive.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I purchased for indoor and outdoor use. F2.8 was the key, although the focal length was somewhat too short. I wish it could go up to 70 or 80mm. 50 mmm @ F2.8 was marginally better than my 18-200mm Nikor. It is also pretty heavy lens. 17mm actually makes a difference, which is wider than my 18-200mm.

It is a sharp lens, but the corners are not sharp especially at 17mm @ F2.8. This was one of the major reasons I returned this lens. In other words, I don't see any real advantage over 18-200mm. Yes, if you have 18-50mm lens, this lens should give you a big boost because at 50mm, the kit lens will be at f5.6, one stop difference.

If it were a bit longer, such as 70mm or 80mm (at this focal length, it would certainly make difference with F2.8, i.e., a nice bokeh potential), and it were sharp at 17mm @ F2.8 (I would use a lot in door), I definitely kept the lens. I returned this lens, and I do not miss either because my 18-200mm gives almost every thing that Sigma 17-50mm 2.8 can give (except 17mm, however it is fuzzy at the edge).

It was not critical to me, but please note that the aperture ring is always turning when it is in auto focus mode. This could be an issue especially those who take video.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

This lens is a great step up from Nikon's kit lenses, and a rival to its higher priced premium lenses. Solidly build with tight tolerance and amazing clarity, this competent lens handles all an urban photographer would want. The flip side of course is lens size and weight, but that is a small price to pay

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

This copy was actually bought as a back up copy. Nothing says you're satisfied with a product like a repeat purchase. I bought my first copy of this lens about a year ago before attending a neices wedding. I shot 1500 photos during the wedding and party afterwards. The colors were great, the indoor wedding shots with natural light were great. I've read that it's not the Nikon 17-55, but at this price level, the value is certainly there. At the 50mm zoom, you're getting 4 times the light as a kit lens, which makes a tremendous difference in lower light shooting. Bought the second copy when they were on sale as the first one has become my everyday go to lens. Don't hesitate to buy one.

I forgot to mention that the optical stabilization (OC in Simga-speak) works very well and I find it to be genuinely useful feature. One correction ... it does have manual override. It's just that the focus ring is located too close to the zoom ring and rotates while it auto focuses, and gets in the way when zooming. Otherwise, extremely sharp lens for the money. It is cheaper than Nikon 16-85mm DX lens, which I have and is sharper and faster.

The big discount for this lens pushed me over the edge to buy it. Looking at the Sigma 17-50 f2.8 EX DC OS HSM and the Nikon AF-S 17-55 f2.8G. I did not take the opportunity to test these two lenses side by side but it no longer matters. The Sigma 17-50 renders sharp edge to edge detail, great color and contrast and I can't imagine the Nikon being much better. Couldn't give 4 and 1/2 stars for this performer but that is what I rate this lens at. There have been some interface problems reported with the D7000 and the D7100 which I use along with my D800e's but so far I've not seen any of these effects. Close focus distance and extremely sharp at wide open make this one a winner for a variety the professional work I do. When it comes to cameras I will always be a Nikon buyer but not with glass. Best option get my money and the Sigma 17-50 won this time.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

First of all, it is very annoying that the focus ring is next to the zoom ring and it rotates while in AF mode, catching my finger as it goes, because it does not have full-time manual override (Nikon lens does).

Other than that, this is a very good lens for the price. With instant rebate, it was 1/3 the price of the Nikon version with 90% of the performance.

There is some edge softness and vignetting at f/2.8 with noticeable barrel distortion at the wide end. Overall sharpness is excellent and the bokeh is decent and CA is really not an issue. It weighs 1/3 less than the Nikon counterpart and the build quality is very good; it feels solid and balances well on D7100. My copy back-focused a bit, requiring -8 setting in AF micro-adjustment setting. Once I adjusted the setting, it really locked in on the sharpness. The AF accuracy was excellent but AF speed seemed tad slower than Nikon.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

Update for my last post. Normally I would use a UWA lens for landscapes. However the 17-50 is great for landscapes too. For the DX user the holy trinity of 3rd party lens' are Sigma 8-16mm, 17-50mm, and 50-150mm.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I use this lens for low light photography indoors and outdoors. As well as night photography, and walk around photography. It has a great zoom range, and is very diverse. This lens and the Sigma 8-16mm make a great pair.Compared to a kit lens, this Sigma has better image quality in low light, better ISO performance, and much faster auto focus. Also. the OS (Vibration Reduction), is very effective, and makes a huge difference in slow shutter speed and low light. The BAD: no 6 year warranty like Tamron. Not so BAD: it's compact but heavy. The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is an upgrade for those who want to unleash the greater potential of their Nikon D3200 that are limited by the kit lens.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

Very good for still photos. However AF is noisier and slower than Nikon 16-85mm, a concern when shooting video with audio. The lens is now manufactured with a switch to turn off the AF for manual focus, a benefit which isn't indicated in all of the official descriptions. Also, the AF does operate in Live View.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

Lens perfomed far above my expectations. Was used the first time capturing the northern lights near the artic circle by Fairbanks Alaska. Using a benro travel tripod & a remote wireless release, also bought from b&h, I was able to catch some great shots of the lights with long exposures on my Nikon d7000. This is even though the lights were not viewable to the untrained naked eye.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I gave this lens as a gift with the Nikon D7100. It is such a great camera/lens combination. Light, sharp, quick to focus. The camera needed no adjusting in the auto focus fine tuning system.

I really don't like purchasing third party lenses and I was nervous about this purchase as well. But Nikon just doesn't offer an equivalent. The OS works well but subject movement doesn't always let you take full advantage of it. Yet I consider the OS a big plus.

I'm really glad I gave this lens (and D7100) to my brother. He let me shoot with it and it was so much fun and gave excellent images.

I purchsed this a little over a year ago becuase I had read some great reviews online. They are absolutley correct. This is a very well made, very sharp lens and it out performs my 2 Nikkor DX zoom lenses ( I have 2 other nikkor lenses -macro and fisheye- that are fixed/prime leses and they are fantastic). I am a pro photographer and for weddings I shoot with a D300s and aD200, both are DX format cameras just in case of an accident. Well that accident happened 10-5-13. A guy accidently knocked the camera out of my hand (just can't shoot with it around my neck) and it hit the concrete floor - HARD - lens first. I am pleased to say that both the camera (D300s) and this lens are fine, as if nothing happened. I was shocked and honestly still don't believe it. All things considered Sigma has come a long, long way since I first tried them in the mid 90's. Congratulations Sigma!
