The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens is an incredibly versatile, lightweight, and compact lens designed specifically for digital SLR cameras with APS-C size sensors. The lens has a fast f/2.8 maximum aperture throughout the entire zoom range. It features a construction of 17 elements in 13 groups with glass that corrects for flare, ghosting and all types of aberrations. It produces high contrast and sharp images throughout the zoom range even at its maximum aperture.

Sigma's OS (Optical Stabilization) feature allows you to shoot at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would otherwise be possible. This means your images will look sharper, even when shooting without a tripod in low existing light or at maximum range with a flash. This lens is also equipped with Sigma's Hyper-Sonic Motor (HSM) which provides for fast and quiet autofocusing.

The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is ideal for many photo opportunities particularly landscapes and portraits, but with its wide focal range and a close focusing distance down to 11" (28cm) you can capture images with unique perspectives. It will quickly become one of the most important lenses in your gear bag.

Note: Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

This lens is for use with digital cameras with APS-C size sensors only. 1
The DC designation on the barrel means that this is a special lens designed so that the image circle matches the smaller size (APS-C) of the image sensor of your digital SLR. Its specialized design gives this lens the ideal properties for digital cameras, including a compact size and lightweight construction.
The 17-50mm f/2.8 offers Sigma's OS System (Optical Stabilization) that allows shooting at shutter speeds approximately 4 stops slower than would be otherwise possible, for sharper handheld photography even in low-light situations.
Constructed with 17 elements in 13 groups, it features FLD ("F" Low Dispersion) glass which is the highest level low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. This glass has a performance equal to fluorite glass which has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. FLD glass offers superior optical performance, equal to fluorite, at an affordable price.
Its HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures a quiet & high-speed auto focus.

I use this lens for low light photography indoors and outdoors. As well as night photography, and walk around photography. It has a great zoom range, and is very diverse. This lens and the Sigma 8-16mm make a great pair.Compared to a kit lens, this Sigma has better image quality in low light, better ISO performance, and much faster auto focus. Also. the OS (Vibration Reduction), is very effective, and makes a huge difference in slow shutter speed and low light. The BAD: no 6 year warranty like Tamron. Not so BAD: it's compact but heavy. The Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 is an upgrade for those who want to unleash the greater potential of their Nikon D3200 that are limited by the kit lens.

From reading reviews, you'll get the sense that this is a solid lens. My own impressions were that it's sharp, even wide open, and works well throughout the zoom and aperture range. It's shockingly heavy for such a short zoom but not to the point of annoyance.

The biggest failing is that there seems to be a lot of variation between copies.Mine, though sharp, had more than ten visible liquid spots behind the front element which were obvious when set to a small aperture (I tested on f22). The look kinda like sensor dust spots but immediately disappeared when I switched lenses.

I'm holding my breath on a replacement copy but make sure you test your copy as soon as you receive.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

With f 2.8 and VR (called OS in Sigma), it is like a prime lens through 20-50mm range (at least, for my copy). It shows some Barrel distortion at 17-18 range. But yet, it stays on my camera as it serves the purpose of 24, 28, 35 and 50 mm f/1.8 prime lenses without having to change them. Well almost. at 24 and 28 the bokeh is not as smooth (if you look at the metal box picture I have posted, you know what I mean), but it is still pretty good. Reasonably fast auto focus, sharp at f/2.8

I was looking for a strong standard zoom for my APS-C Nikon that won't break my wallet, after comparing this Sigma with Tamron's equivelant offerings, I decided to give it a try, and I was glad I did. It was sharp throughout the zoom range from f4.0 down, and has good skin tone on my camera. The downside is it gets soft at the corners when wide open. Overall, I am happy with my purchase.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I purchased this lens to primarily take pictures at my son's youth basketball games. I can sit court-side so long focal lengths aren't that necessary, what I need is a fast lens because of the typically poor lighting conditions in the gyms he plays in. The improvement in image quality from a kit lense to the Sigma is dramatic. Other parents have definitely noticed an improvement in picture quality since I switched to this lens.

I don't use the image stabilization feature so I can't comment on that. In general, the lens focuses quickly and produces good quality images at wide open settings. I'm using a Nikon D70 as the body, shoot in aperature priority mode and couldn't be happier with the results I'm getting.

I do find I have to be careful to not accidentally knock the button to switch between AF and MF - I did this for one game and couldn't understand why I didn't get many crisp images. But since then I've gotten into the habit of always checking the button before a game begins. The lens is a little heavier than I'd like because of the optical stabilization motor.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

Fast, sharp wide open with stellar performance after f/4. Did not have to fine tune my copy on my D7100. Build quality is great, zoom & focus rings are smooth and nicely damped. IQ is excellent with great contrast and a mellow quality that I like. Image stabilization is quiet, autofocus is very fast. The autofocus stays active for about 30 sec or so, after you shoot, potentially draining the battery faster. The focus ring moves during autofocus and you cant overide the autofocus either. These points aside, an excellent lens for a modest investment.

My two small negatives was no weather gasket and you have to hold your hand very close to the body when using AF or you will jam it up. No deal breakers. Great lens

I took this lens to a car show and it produced a handful of great pictures. This is the perfect walkaround lens. I did a ton of research before buying this lens and I am not disappointed at all.

Nikon make great lenses but this little jewel takes the cake its heavy but not as much as some of my 2.8 Nikon Lenses. Its versatility makes it a number 1 for my travels its going into the bag as I speak.
it works in almost every situation and makes itself most useful of my lens line up for my D7100 and D90

My review will echo many of the positive sentiments others have posted. I use mine about 75% video/25% still photography on a Nikon D7000 body. Simply put, it's a well-made lens, tough construction for the price, excellent DOF for video (as would be expected at f2.8), and the focus ring is wide and conveniently placed for manual focus work. Autofocus could be a bit faster, but it's not a big deal for me. Highly recommended

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I purchased this lens a few months ago, and I have to say that it is an excellent lens. It is extremely sharp from 2.8 on! It has taken some changes to how I shoot though, because of the relatively limited focal range - I was a zoomer.

Comments about Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC OS HSM Zoom Lens for Nikon DSLRs with APS-C Sensors:

I dreamt of this glass on my camera for a very long time. Unfortunately at first, I bought a used one from another vendor. The used glass was focus hunting and also too noisy. So I returned it. A few days after B&H reduced the price of this glass by a hefty amount; and so I bought it from B&H without question. If I'm not mistaken, the price came to be less than the used one I returned. I'm so pleased with my purchase. The kit lens that came with my camera is now on the book shelf. This lens is now the proper lens for my camera.
