Product Highlights
  • For Sony/Minolta Digital SLRs with APS-C Size Sensors

The Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM is an ultra-wide zoom that has a 35mm equivalent angle of view of a 12-24mm lens when used on DSLRs with APS-C size image sensors. This lens is constructed with 15 elements in 11 groups which help deliver incredibly sharp image captures. Sigma's FLD glass elements, equal to fluorite glass, correct for color aberrations and aid in delivering beautiful high contrast images.

The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4" (24cm) allowing you to emphasize the subject by creating exaggerated perspectives. It features a compact construction with an overall length of 4.2" (105.7mm) and a maximum diameter of 3.0" (75mm).

This 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 super wide angle zoom is perfect for shooting landscape photography, architecture, building interiors, photojournalism, wedding photography, group pictures and a wide variety of other shooting opportunities you may encounter.

Note: Due to the curved shape of the front element, filters cannot be attached to this lens.

Note! Vignetting will occur if the lens is used with digital cameras with image sensors larger than APS-C size or 35mm SLR cameras.

This is a DC series lens designed exclusively for use with Sony/Minolta DSLRs with APS-C size sensors.
The lens features FLD glass elements with performance equal to fluorite glass to compensate for color aberration.
The Super Multi-Layer Coating reduces flare and ghosting while superior peripheral brightness ensures high contrast images throughout the entire zoom range.
One hybrid aspherical lens and two glass mold elements give excellent correction for distortion and astigmatism.
It produces images with exaggerated perspective with its wide angle view.
The HSM (Hyper-Sonic Motor) ensures quiet and high speed AF as well as full-time manual focus capabilities.

I purchased the Sigma 8 - 16mm UWA lens to use on my new NEX 7 with Sony's LA-EA2 adapter for landscape and architectural photography. Truly an amazing lens with good contrast and wonderful color. There is only the very slighest hint of color abberation and not all the time.

One of my early test photos was to photograph the building that I manage here in NYC which is 440 feet high from a distance of 50 feet away and see if I could fit the entire structure in the photo. From street level to the sky with clarity, sharpness and true color rendition. The building looks very impressive and twice as tall as it actually is. I knew then and there that this lens was a keeper.

If I purchase the Nikon D800E at Christmas this will be the first lens for it.

I cannot recommend Sigma 8-16mm highly enough. Every real estate professional and real estate photographer will love it. It makes small apartments look twice their actual size.

Thanks Sigma for this beauty of a lens.

I bought the lens to use with Sony's LA-EA2 adapter on my Sony NEX 5N. I tested the lens mainly by photographing buildings accross the street at f/8 and f/11 at 8mm, 12mm and 16mm focal lengths; ISO 200,shutter speed in the range of 1/160th. In all cases, the center area of the images was acceptably sharp. Moving off-centre toward the sides, there was strong enough blur to defeat the purpose of using this lens, particularly at 8mm and 12 mm focal lengths. I also noticed that the lens produces more sharpness throughout the image when photographing depth rather than width. That is, photographing a narrow area from near the camera to further away reproduces both the near and far elements rather well; but photographing wide expanses from a distance of about thirty feet encountered the issue described above. I returned the lens to B&H.

I got this lens for wide angles indoors. It works great , focus is great. I am impressed with how little distortion there is. It is not a fish eye and that is what I needed.

Surprisingly sharp and easy to use particularly with Sony a77's peaking feature for sharpening confirmation. Perfect for landscapes and for catching those important foreground objects in the frame. Lots of fun to play around with multiple compositions. Unfortunately can't use a polarizer.

I recently received this lens from B&H, shipping was instananeous and I've come to expect nothing less from them.I moved to a west coast city, and wanted to treat myself to a lens that would take some great landscape shots and architectural stuff as well. I'm exceptionally happy with my choice, it's incredible to see what this lens can do. Crystal clear glass, great shots, and the angles are incredible, the detail that is in each photo is fantastic. Very glad I purchased this lens. I'm really looking forward to trying some tripod nighttime buildings downtown, should be interesting.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Sony/Minolta Digital SLR:

I didn't realize how much of a difference 8mm to 10mm makes. This camera is really wide. There is distortion which should be expected. However, its not too much distortion and usually can be fixed mostly in post. You have to be careful in the angle and placement of objects in the frame.

This lens is a lot of fun and I'm excited to continue learning how to take better ultra wide shots.

If you need wide, this is the widest you can get for these types of cameras.

Wish it was easier to attach a filter.

A well made lens- somewhat heavy but very usable. It shows the distortion expected in so wide a lens- especially at 8mm focal length but it becomes very well controlled by 12mm. Altogether I am quite pleased with the lens's performance and recommend it.

This is without a doubt, a great lens. It has great contrast and color. The images look sharp across the whole range. On a Sony a65 with the APS-C size sensor the 8mm position makes the best super-wide I have ever owned. I can't speak for a full frame camera but on the a65 APS-C size sensor the image is clean corner to corner.

excellent wide angle with really sharp imaging capability. i was surprised at how wide this actually is. i've owned and used a tokina 11-16 2.8 and think the sigma is as sharp, though slower. not being 2.8 doesn't really matter for how i (maybe most people) use wide angles. solid and very nice build. comes with a great case.

I am satisfied of a lens that fits my expectations for wide view pictures. In order to get the best results you rather use the range starting at 10 to 16 and prefer f>= 8.

this lens is a good match with the Sony Ziess 16-80 and is about the same size. It has allowed me to extend into the ultra wide and make images from very close which imho adds an intimaticy not otherwise obtainable. I love the deep depth of field and 9 inch min focus distance.

I don't really care much about the technical stuff and find this lens to be just fine.

You can't put a filter on it and the lens hood extender is useless unless you want a round image filling only half the frame.

Don't have it for a long time now but can say it was definitely the right choice.

Nothing to complain about it. Easy to use, really cool shots. Might become my favorite lens

Having had a Sigma 10-20mm lens I knew that this would be even better. The HMS motor is so quick and silent that the first few times you look to make sure the camera is on!

Architectural shots look great and the lens is very clear. Mounted on a Sony a700.
