The Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM is an ultra-wide zoom that has a 35mm equivalent angle of view of a 12-24mm lens when used on DSLRs with APS-C size image sensors. Sigma's FLD glass elements, equal to fluorite glass, correct for distortions and color aberrations to deliver beautiful high contrast images.
The lens has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4" (24cm) allowing you to get in close to a subject to create exaggerated perspectives. This super wide angle zoom is perfect for shooting landscape photography, architecture, building interiors, photojournalism, wedding photography, group pictures and a wide variety of other shooting opportunities you may encounter.

I choose this ultra-wide zoom lens after doing a lot of research and reading many comments. I took it out to San Francisco and came back with some amazing photos. The distortion of the picture is minimal for such a wide angle, it is incredibly sharp and the colors are vivid. I have read some complaints about not being able to put on a UV filter to protect it. Because of the wide angle it is physically impossible, the cut-outs in the lens hood are there to accommodate the wide angle, covering them would allow you see the hood as well as the ring of the filter. In my opinion the lens is sufficiently deep into the hood for normal protection, just be a little careful as you would with any lens. The auto-focus is fast and accurate. All-in-all I think that anyone who wants to take photos of architecture and/or make some creative images should definitely consider this lens.

great lens... if you get a good one
[...]When you have a sharp copy with a good AF motor, it's a beautiful thing... and of course 8mm is ridiculously wide.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
For the price, this lens has performed beautifully - even better than expected. The distortion is there but can be dealt with to some extent. CA is kept to a minimum and sharpness is very good. One of the useful aspects of this lens is the ease of including foreground in landscape work, providing a greater sense of depth. Construction is a little plasticky.

The lens works good after i learned how to use it. One thing I noticed, and i'm not sure if it's just the lens I got or if it's like this on every lens, is when i'm zooming in and out in manual the lens makes a scraping/grinding sound.

I have only shot a few test shots, it's sharp, well constructed, everything moves with silky smoothness and it feels strong. Distortion is well controlled, and even more so after using lens corrections in lightroom. The hood is a bit strange but works, I may glue the hood to the sleeve. I have just seen a filter system for this lens expensive but works with 165mm square filters. 1.2 seems to be the strongest Hitec ND filter available, shame would like to see an ND 3.All in all a great lens

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
Could not justify the cost of Canon's 8 - 15mm, but saw good reports of this lens. Have shot only a few test shots but am very impressed, distortion a low to begin with and even better after using lens corrections in Lightroom. Lens is not that fast but I will probably use this at f8 or f11 most of the time so that is not relevant. Build quality is very good, lens feels well built, everything moves with silky smoothness. Hood is a bit weird but works, I may glue the lens hood to the sleeve. I have just seen a wide angle filter system for this lens so if need be that is solvable, admittedly at a price. The only filter that I might need would be an ND 3. All in all this appears to be a great lens.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
I've been wanting an ultra wide angle lens for some time, and when I saw this lens went 2mm "wider" than other brands, I decided to rent one for a trial. I instantly fell in love with this lens and bought one. It opens up such new oppertunites for creativity. The image quality is good, and it has better edge sharpness than I experienced with other brands. I've used it for indoor photography, low light, night, and landscape. It has good flare resistence, especially when the sun falls into view (which is often with such a wide view!). Focus is fast and accurate. Used with a Canon 60D.

1) this lens WILL work on a 35mm film SLR --provided it is effectively used as a 15mm/16mm 'prime' (14mm or wider, vignetting)2)a FILTER can be fitted -- there is a lens hood, and a 72mm filter will screw on to the lens hood3) magnificent lens --- vertical lines are vertical, straight lines are straight, perspective is phenominal4) i use mine on both a canon 600D, and also as a 16mm 'prime' on my old reliable EOS-5000 SLR.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
I've been using Sigma Lenses for the past 20 years with excellent results. I read a recent review stating, "The 8-16mm lens is not a walk around lens" I visited the Chicago Botanic Gardens carrying the 8-16mm Sigma Lens, without this lens I would not have been able to compose with the same unrestricted field of vision as I witnessed with my own eyes. So I beg to differ. It's a great lens and I would recommend it anyone interested in scenic photography.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
I use this lens for Large Subjects - everything from cars to countryside. The wide angle is easily manipulated to produce some distortion when desired, but keeping a reasonable distance controls the 'stretch' at the edges of the frame and center-bulge. Anything person-sized or smaller will likely be bent out of shape at the widest regions when close-in. By no means is this "fast glass", but the 8-16 still does OK in low light, partially because it's grabbing light from such a large area. at ISO 1600, and with a sharpshooter's hand, you can get crisp single frames at a 13th or even 10th of a second at dusk or indoors - stationary subjects only, of course. Construction is impresssive and solid, although the combination of built in petal hood & 2-part cylindrical lens cap/sleeve can be inconvenient to wrangle when swapping lenses - which you will have to do, unless shooting with a 2nd rig, as this is not a "walking around" lens by any stretch (see what I did there?!) of the imagination. Zoomed in to 16mm, the peripheral distortion and very mild vignetting will be significantly reduced, but you are still left with a fairly wide, slow lens, so you'll need to pack at least a fast prime as well. I have added the 8-16 to a loadout that includes a 17-50, fast 50, and 70-300; it has been a very strong addition to my gear bag. I've already gone back to a few favorite locations and reshot subjects I was already happy with, and the 8-16 really brought these big shots home in a way my other lenses just can't match.

Bought this lens after considering several others, but the 8 -16mm zoom appealed to me and kept bringing me back. Best purchase I've made in a wide angle zoom. Great focus - spot on with no distortion. My primary use is in landscape photography and I've been impressed with this lens. It meets or exceeds all my expectations.

I could not believe the clarity in the detail of this lens at 16mm compared to the details provided at 18 mm in my 18-200 mm kit lens. I am now spoiled and have to upgrade my mid-range zoom.

Comments about Sigma 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 DC HSM Ultra-Wide Zoom Lens for Select Canon EOS SLRs:
This is a great lens for the price. My photos are very clear looking and I love the extreme wide-angle without making it look like a fish-eye. I wish there was a way to get a filter on, but the glass has a special coating that it does look like there is a UV filter on it. Image stabilization would be nice, but I haven't noticed my photos to be blurry from shake. Overall I'm happy with my purchase.
