If you're looking for better light using your on-camera flash, Photek's Softlighter Hot Shoe Diffuser Kit (36") fits the bill: you get a 36" umbrella with a white interior and black removable cover, a diffuser panel with an opening for a hot shoe flash (not included) and the umbrella shaft, a set of Velcro tabs for the flash head, a hot shoe umbrella/light stand adapter with an adjustable hot shoe locking plate for mounting the flash/umbrella to a stand, and a set of silver and gold discs for modifying the color of the light. This setup gives you a broad, soft studio-quality light using only a battery-powered "on-camera" flash.

As an editorial photographer based in the UK. I had waited expectantly for the arrival of the Softlighter, which is not available here in the UK. After a few test shots, I used it on a commission for a National newspaper for the first time last weekend. Really, really pleased with the results, beautifully soft, even, shadowless light. Very easy and quick to set-up. I would recommend this to every newspaper photographer who has limited time to set up and execute assignments.

I have two of these Softlighters, and I almost can't imagine how they could be better. Almost. I use them for shooting on location, so it's great that they're so light-weight and collapsable, and that they allow so many variations (diffusion on or off, black back on or off, or through the umbrella). So how could they be better? It would be really, really useful if they made a fabric grid to go over the thing - or several different grids, for that matter. I wrote to them and asked if they had such a thing and they didn't even bother writing back. Somebody handy with a sewing machine should whip up a few thousand - I'd sure buy one (or two or three).
