When comparing the myriad of iTouch/iPhone interfaces, I chose this one because it lines up with my philosophy: Get the biggest bang for the buck. And yes, at this price point it's just a couple of jacks wired together, but the iRig looked the coolest, and came from a company I've dealt with through the years: I've had great customer service responses whenever I've called or emailed IK Multimedia about their software products. So far, I have used this for recordings and jam sessions... with rave reviews on the simplicty and quality of my 'rig' which keeps getting smaller as one of my music buddies noticed (stack to combo, combo to modeling amp floorboard, floorboard to laptop, and now laptop to iTouch). I could see this being used by a voice-over artist working on a spot using the iRig with their favorite mic and using the Amplitube's compressor and EQ to finalize a performance which could then be emailed right from the iTouch.I'm just giving it 4 stars right now because I haven't seen how well it's really going to hold up (although it seems built plenty well enough), or what it will do in a really noisey (wireless RF) environment.I just don't think you can go wrong with this device thanks to its simplicty and quality. There's no active electronics to break down, or color your tone, like the more expensive units. Think of it this way: If you're going to spend $100+ on an iTouch guitar interface (or a certain blue plug-in microphone), why not just buy one of those new mini recorders with built-in stereo condenser mics, a 4-track recorder and all the I/O you'll ever need?

I bought the iRig ($$$$) to plug into a real guitar amp...

The first iRig disappointment was the headphone jack 'out'... the instructions state that you can NEVER use 'mono' at this connection.

Since ALL guitar amps are mono, this isn't a solution easily solved... expect to spend another ($$) for TWO additional adapters >>> 1/8" stereo to split RCA's >>> RCA to 1/4" mono adapter (there are other ways to do this, but you still need adapters = more money).

Now we get to head over to iTunes an pay another ($$) for the iRig software... done.

Lastly, excited to hear this thing in person, I plug it all into my Marshall 30 Solid State practice amp... ... ... ... blah.

Short of a couple pedals like 'Noise Reduction'... pretty much everything sounds worse than the built-in effects on my cheap bedroom amp... there's no guts!

I had hoped the 'Delay' pedal would provide some deep delays... and while it does ok... the degraded sound quality being pumped through the iphone > iRig > headphoneJack > stereo-to-mono adapter > amp connection... just ruins it.

Point being, some of the pedals function nicely... but the poor connection makes the sound quality worse than you're used to hearing with your amp's built-in gain... the second I plugged directly back into the amp, my ears felt relieved... the power was back on!

Personally I'm disappointed that it won't be making the cut for my practice needs... it was expensive for a headphone practice toy.

Fortunately, if you intend to practice ONLY through headphones, you may find decent use for this setup... I only wish IK Multimedia had promoted it that way... I never would have purchased it then.

CONCLUSION: The quality is not up to par for band practice or recording... somehow the iRig drains the life out of an otherwise powerful sounding guitar setup... but practicing through headphones is great.

Comments about IK Multimedia AmpliTube iRig:

I needed this to run a mixer in & out of the Loopy app on my iPod and iPad. Apple apparently has a unique headphone input/ output vs. android or other devices, so another splitter I bought didn't work. But this did!

Comments about IK Multimedia AmpliTube iRig:

For me the iRig is the perfect solution for an on the road/in the hotel room practice rig. I can get great tones, record song ideas onto my ipad and I don't have to carry a practice amp otr with me. Plus I'm not disturbing other hotel guests and getting phone calls from the management in the middle of the night. Super compact and with all the apps available the uses are unlimited. My understanding is that there are even HD rigs available that could be used as your main amp source on stage. No complaints at all

Comments about IK Multimedia AmpliTube iRig:

Easy to set up, but there is no user manual except through Lynda. System requires a stereo cable from the iRig to the amp. If your output volume is very low, this is the problem. This is not spelled out anywhere and customer support at IK appeared to be unaware of the solution, at least they never mentioned it. My guitar teacher solved the problem.

Does what I needed, which is sound effects just for practice on my guitar. The irig hardware is great, simple hookup. Had trouble getting sound from guitar to amp but that's because of the software I used and had to search for it online.

Comments about IK Multimedia AmpliTube iRig:

I bought the iRig so that I could practice my scales during my lunch break at work. So far, I have been very pleased with the results. What I really like about the unit is it is small, light and has good enough sound quality for practice via headphones or even through a PA if you don't want to lug around your heavy gear. In now way would I recommend this as a straight up replacement for performance, as the tone is somewhat noisey, a little harsh at times and a little hollow. To be fair, I am a tone nut and I own several boutique pedals (Moog, Diamond, Analogman) and a vintage Fender Twin so the comparison is rather stark to me. But, as a light weight practice and even "jam with drinking buddies" rig, it's fantastic. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars is because after purchasing the iRig, I realized I had to them purchase IK's Amplitube App which was $20. I believe it should have been included. But for a total of $[$], I can practice at work, or in a car (as long as I'm not the driver ;) and not bother a soul. S

I think once there are more products for IOs music making this won't end up being one of the better ones, but there aren't so this will have to do for now. It feels cheaply made and isn't the cleanest sounding thing in the world, but it does pass signal. I would recommend getting an I/O for the 30 pin slot, butif you are like me, and this slot is already filled by a midi device then this is what you're going to get.

Bought an irig last year to play my Martin acoustic through my ipod. I was overwhelmed with the results. My son bought a Les Paul and didn't have an amp so I ordered him an irig from B&H and had it delivered to his address in NY. Now he can play his guitar in his apartment through his ipad with his headphones. Needless to say he loves it. Very functional, works great and sounds awesome. Well pleased. Thanks B&H. Great price and shipped quickly.

Excellent for using your guitar with Amplitube as well for recording your guitar in any of a number of apps. Clean, low-noise, easy to use and very small and easy to carry around.

I'm a guitarplayer that has no pedals to add fx to my guitar, so this is like a dream to me, with a low cost I can have whatever my mind can create. iRig just came to help me practice more. I can play with my iPad without bothering anybody with my distorted guitar and my punk rock riffs.

For the musicians interested in using it for studying purposes, or recording some stuff without a big concern about sound quality (which is way better than anyone could expect from it IMHO), it's just perfect! Inseparable companion to my smartphone!

I use this product with both my acoustic guitar and electric bass to record in GarageBand on my iPad2. There is a slight hiss when I use my acoustic, but the noise disappears when mixed with other instruments. I can also limit the amount of hiss by turning up the Noise Gate in GarageBand.
Has been a great tool to help with getting my "own sound" into the music I am recording.

Just got my iRig in the mail, downloaded the program and 1, 2, 3 was set-up playing from my iPad. Great tones ill use this as a travel set-up. There are tons of possibilities, still trying to find my tone im pretty picky about my sound. This is fantastic set-up for a new guitarist.

The ability to carry around an amp, effects, recording, tuner, etc. is awesome. For the price, even better. This is a great piece of hardware that impresses anybody who has ever had to carry around their stuff to practice or even play. Totally worth the money.
