I have had this product about three months and have used it extensively. On a three week tour of Michigan's Keweenaw Peninsula, west to Glacier-Waterton NPs, and back to Mi through Canada, I took this head, my ballhead, and pan head. I never took the PHQ-1 head off the tripod, it was that versitile. It is solidly built and handled all lenses up to my 80-400mm Nikon which is a boat anchor of a lens and all this on a Monfrotto carbon-fiber pod.
I'll fault it on only three points. The handy fold-down-for-travel handles are a great addition but the couplings that straighten the handle are often loose (any time you tighten or loosen the handle to operate a movement)giving the feel that the unit is not solid. 2. At least in my unit, the tilt functions are a bit stiff until the handle is loosened quite a ways, a bit more than I think necessary, again a minor annoyance (I even oiled it a bit). 3. In the Induro demo video, it shows how easy it is to set up for a pano with the leveling bubble. This is true and accurate IF you are setting up for a level pano. You still need a leveling head, such as the Monfrotto 438, to do a pano that aims down or up. And I suppose a fourth, the upward tilt is only 15 degrees while down is 90. You can easily remedy this by turning the camera around in the head and reclamping. It's a bit backward but it works.
This is a great head and a great addition to my photo equipment, don't let the four comments scare you away from buying it.

I have been using an Arca-Swiss Super Ballhead for many years, but I was intrigued behind the idea of this product. A 5-Way Panhead is pretty smart, but what I don't understand about this product is its actual construction. Specifically, little things that don't work out of the box and should- are the bubble levels. They're rather hokey. But the bigger issue with this head is how easily it loosens itself. It has by all appearances two locking nuts that lock the handles into place and when not in use, allows the user to collapse them for easy storage. That said, the lock nut handles keep coming loose, no matter how you crank them down.

So the beauty of this product is how flexible its movements work and from that perspective this product is great, but the actual workmanship is less than desired.

Really disappointing because instead of locking down your shot and actually shooting, you are left to be in the field worrying about that extra step of tightening down (all the time) the handles on the head. Great idea, bad execution on Induro's part. I think this product has a lot of potential, it is just not ready for the demands of serious photography.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

This PHQ1 PHQ Series 5 tripod head is a good idea but was poorly executed. The adjustment arms are hard to tighten they should have been knurled instead of hex which you really need a wrench to tighten. Also the bubble levels and the degree markers were off at true level. Totally dissatisfied with this product.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

I do quite a bit of product photography and was tired of constantly leveling my ball head each time I wanted to shoot at a new angle. This head really shines for this because once you level the camera by using any of the "5" levels it has, it then becomes very easy to precisely pan, tilt forward or back, or tilt 90 degrees to the side for a vertical shot by a simple twist of the tightening knobs. Another great feature is that it also has measure points located at every turning point to zero in on specific angles if needed. I also love how smoothly all of the parts move as well.

One of the coolest features about this head happens to be my only minor gripe and that is the collapsable handles. These are very easy to loosen and fold down making the handles very compact for storage, however the nut does seem to loosen up very easily when in use as well and I find myself tightening them frequently while shooting. I am only hand tightening the handle nuts and hopefully this will stay more snug as I use the handle more.

Overall I am very happy with the quality and functionality of this head and would highly recommend it for product or landscape photography.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

This tripod head is precision and well engineered. Obviously a lot of thought went into the design. It will be invaluable for panorama photos, and for videos. The fluid head has perfect resistance. As a retired TV ENG cameraman, I know what a head should feel like when panning and tilting. This one moves very smoothly. I'm extremely happy with the purchase.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

I recently purchased the Induro #AT413 tripod legs. I was using an old Monfrotto #3030 3-way head and needed to move up to a more stable system. The old head weight capacity is 11.4 lbs and this new head is rated for 25.3 lbs and there has been a big difference in the stability of my entire system as I had hoped.

The best feature, in my view, is even at a slightly downward angle a series of horizontal shots are level to the horizon rather than an arch as you would expect.

The ease of using the several built-in levels at every adjustment is a lot more intuitive than I had imagined. This head is a little pricy but well worth it.

This 5-way head and leg combination has become a great asset for qualtiy landscape and building shots. The system is a little heavier than my old system but manageable.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

As a professional photographer I have used a Bogen 3047 head for 15+ years. My heads were old and they had been discontinued so after some study I replaced all my heads with Induro heads. I had read several others commenting about how complicated the extra movements were but felt that as a professional I could quickly adjust.

I have now been using the PHQ-1 head for about 6 months and after 10,000+ images I can say that the head gets in the way of good photography and concentration on composition. The problem is that there are so many controls and configurations that you can never get into a rhythm with the head. A good head should get out of the way and allow you to compose without thinking about the process of using the head.

There are too many controls and depending on the setup the controls knobs are often in different positions. The result is that you never really know where the knobs are so you have to stop, take your eye from the viewfinder and locate the knobs to control the head. This is a major distraction and when in rapidly changing light it can cause you to miss shots.

This is a well made head and it fills a speciality niche for panoramas but it cannot be my primary tripod head.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

I was in the market for a new tripod head, and wanted to move into the Arca-Swiss compatableclamp. When I saw the 5-way pan head from Induro I was intrigued. Who wouldn't be. Everyone said that there was a learning curve so I wanted to try one before I bought it. I could only rent the PHQ3. I used it foe a week with all my lenses and my Novoflex Castel-L Focusing Rack. Loved it so I bought the PHQ1.

The head that was shipped to me had broken levels. No problem as B&H made the replacement process painless. Received the new head, used the supplied plate and started shooting away. I like the ability to control all the axes of the head.

Imagine my GREAT disappointment when I put my Novoflex Castel-L Focusing Rack on the head, pointed it down & the rack started sliding off. The Arca-Swiss compatibility for the rail was one of the main selling points for me.

I like the head and got it so I could clamp my rail directly to the head. I can't so its usefulness to me is very limited. This ruined an otherwise good product.

This is a shame. It worked fine on its big brother but not on this model. This is why I am giving it 2 stars.

I original wrote this on 10 Sept. but it didn't take. I had sent a copy to Induro on that day to let them know what I wrote. Surprise...They never even acknowledged my email.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

I was sold on the idea that I could have one ball/panhead that would satisfy my necessity to shoot video and stills and alleviate the need to carry two specific heads. I love the idea, and I think that if they continue to improve the design it could be a wonderful tool....but: The handles do not stay tight, even when tightened with a wrench. I think the reason is that induro has used a flimsy plastic washer instead of something more durable and it doesn't provide enough friction to keep things tight. I thought that i could deal with a little wiggle here and there, but when you are working on something intense with a lot of movement, its really unacceptable. one of the handles actually unscrewed and fell out during transport which I think is another huge design flaw. Make sure that you secure both handles with a strap or rubber band to mitigate against this problem. If i didn't have someone walking behind me on the trail i would have lost one for sure. Regarding video, panning is smooth until one decides to add a lens with any substantial weight like a 70-200. this guy should be able to handle a d7000 and that lens without a problem. I'm sure one could get decent results with a lot of practice, but honestly you shouldn't have to work that hard for a basic pan. In conclusion, I can't say that its all bad either. This is a great head for a light set-up and for someone that can deal with a few annoyances like the handles. For me, a ball-head is better for just about everything with the exception of the few times I need to shoot video. until they fix the glitches, I recommend picking one or the other.

It's ALMOST a great head. THe design & concept are great, but the build quality is sub-par, especially for the way it looks in the photos.
The collapsable handles are rickety. The motion is sticky, and the bubble levels don't agree with each other. The gradation markings should be more precise for architectural work.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

This tripod head is great and functions well. The quick release plate locks in and tightens well, I have no fear that I am going to loose a camera due to the plate coming free. Easy to use and gets into different positions well, handles lock position well and with minimal effort. Can support the weight of a dslr and 24-70l with ease. The only complaint is with the folding handles. I actually dont mind their size and the seem to function well but the do seem to work themselves loose and the joint where the handles fold. This does not affect the head holding the position but it is kind of a pain which is why I am giving it 4 stars. Seems very well build and looks to last years.

Comments about Induro PHQ1 PHQ Series 5-Way Panhead:

I am extremely pleased with the performance of the Induro PHQ1. Since it was released, I have been eyeing it, but really wasn't sure if it was worth the price tag. Even more frustrating, living in Hawaii, I was unable to find a local shop that stocked the product - most had yet to hear of the product. Since I am a very hands on try-before-you-buy kind of photographer, not to mention the lack of overall reviews around the internet, I remained hesitant to purchase it.

Having finally taken the leap and purchased the PHQ1, I can unequivocally state that this is the best panhead (or psuedo-ballhead essentially) I've used to date, and for me it is worth the price.

The construction is very robust and solid. Nary a bit of wiggle or unsteadiness at any joint or on the mounting plate. And while of solid construction, it really doesn't weigh a considerable amount, especially given the features and functionality of the unit.

As for the functionality, watch the clear and outstanding videos on the Induro site, and you will likely immediately grasp the advantages this unit has to offer over traditionally pan or ballhead only units.

I completely love this unit, and would recommend, without hesitation, the purchasing for all types of photography. I highly doubt you will ever regret purchasing this quality head.
