I had to replace my elinchrom el-skyport transmitter of only 2 months (discontinued model) because it fell off the camera. This new speed transmitter is much improved with a more durable construction and proper lock nut for the hot shoe. additionally the power indicator light is a great bonus to remind the user to turn off. this is combined with much better flush mount control buttons, auto turn off and great speed control options. Elinchrom really woke up quickly to the older units flaws and replaced it recently with this trigger. It is totaly backwards compatible to the elinchrom line of recievers, transmitters and trancievers and flash units.
I use this transmitter to fire my ranger RX strobes and with another receiver to fire my 580 EX speed-lights and slaves. It make for a great set up to on the fly switch between groups of flashes as well as control the power of my Ranger RX from the camera.

I have the original Skyport transmitter (not made any longer) and this new SPEED variety. The SPEED transmitter has a completely different chassis design, and the shoe breaks very easily. My first one broke after a year. The replacement then broke within two weeks. It keeps snapping where the foot assembly meets the transmitter body.

As a hard working wedding photographer, I need tough gear. These Elinchrom SPEED transmitters are too weak. I know you might see one bad review and decide to ignore it. Trust me - don't ignore this review. The receivers (separate product) are also weak. My assistant has broken those as well.

Otherwise, range is fine for my needs. Functions are also fine. I'll be switching to the new PocketWizard X.

Comments about Elinchrom Skyport SPEED Transmitter:

The sky port works well , but is very flimsy. I dropped the first one and the second was lightly knocked by the person i was photographing. This caused the the skyport to sever from the hot shoe mount. I am not that hard of my gear and use it mostly for environmental portraits with the Quadra.

Comments about Elinchrom Skyport SPEED Transmitter:

Use this on location and in the studio. Seems to be quite reliable for me in a variety of shooting situations but it is a flimsy piece of equipment. Everything about it feels cheap; from the way the switches are loosely set in the housing to the antenna that seems like it might bend off whenever you flip it up. And yes I had one of these units break in the hotshoe as well….I was on location and bent down slowly to turn the Ranger unit off and my camera barely tapped into the side of the unit and the Skyport transmitter broke off. It's really a shame Elinchrom doesn't engineer this better, it may be time to start the migration to a better built system as this is the last Skyport trigger I plan on buying.

              Fantastic little trigger.

LED flashes once every 4 second for NORMAL mode and twice every 4 second for SPEED mode.

Knowing this can solve problems when you are not triggering you flash.

Press and hold the "Test" button for 10 Seconds to reset the trigger to factory defaults. switch to Speed mode by holding TEST button for 5 seconds.

Mode does not change even if battery is removed...

This has cause lots of photographers problems because the trigger is so simple to use, and who reads the instructions....

I haven't use it too much but so far is has worked great. I bought it for my Elinchrom light and first just bought a transmitter from my local camera store. It didn't transmit to my light at all so I took it back and ordered this transmitter and it is wonderful.

This newer version of the Skyport features a locking hotshoe connection and improved stabilty over previous versions. The ability to adjust the power of the strobe from the camera is fantastic. However, the light, plastic construction feels delicate and long-term durability might be an issue.

The Build Quality on the piece is is really cheap. It feels like it will break every time i put it on the camera. Its also very hard to read because its black on black. If you have to change frequency then you will need glasses and a strong light. However it does its job quite well.

I use this product with three monoblock heads and two Rangers. Its performance is great. Its construction is weak. This is the second one I have purchased. I dropped the first one at a wedding and it fell apart. I wish Elinchrom would place this apparatus in a sturdier container.

Comments about Elinchrom Skyport SPEED Transmitter:

I have years of experience with these units. I shoot primarily on location and in the studio during the wedding off-season. I want nothing more to change wireless systems but there's really no alternative unfortunately since I am married to the elinchrom system. The company really needs to improve on these further. The "Speed" line seems to have been such an attempt after the first versions were introduced. Further refinement is greatly needed. I have never had ANY kind of equipment fail me and embarrass me more in front of my clients more than the skyport products. I am exhausted having to apologize because one of my units has suddenly malfunctioned or refuses to communicated with my receiver consistently or the worst is when the plastic foot on these crack because of a slight accidental bump. I believe the company is fine this build weakness because they seem to view these as disposable (as is evident in their literature/manual for their receivers regarding their irreplaceable built-in batteries). It's a good profit system - I have a whole bag of broken triggers. As stated, I've had a trigger just go "dead" (still powers on but no longer "talks" to any of my receivers), I've had the plastic feet break (AND the mini-phone plug-in die rendering the unit useless). I literally broke a foot one of these before getting my first photo taken with it. I've also had the metal contact point on the foot no longer receive electrical communication from the camera's shoe.

The range on these are questionable. I shot at a reception last night and only one of my two lights were going off when I was only about 50 feet away. It was happy to fire 100% when I was standing right next to it...

It isn't fun having to constantly re-order these. It is expensive when all added up. In the studio these talk great to my 600RX strobes. On location, where I use these the most, they have given me far more grief than enjoyment. I've looked into other products but research shows that the grass may not be so greener on the others side. Come on Elinchrom! Please improve on this trigger's weaknesses already and give us a product that will stand up to the vigorous demands of the pro!

On the positive side, if you plan on using these primarily in the studio, you can probably get away with not physically breaking these. I can't guarantee, however, any longer term health with regards to its unreliable circuitry.

Comments about Elinchrom Skyport SPEED Transmitter:

This transmitter is manure. I read the instructions. I am not new to studio triggers, but I couldn't get this to do anything. Not even trigger my Elinchrom BRX 500, let alone change the power levels on it. Maybe mine is completely defective. Use Pocket Wizard. Also came brand new with a bunch of scratches on the top. This thing sucks.

Well I have to say this works ok *most* of the time. I frequently have one or many lights not trigger. I recently had an assistant rip the Skyport off the hotshoe. While I know this was a mistake I wish the hotshoe fitting material on the skyport was metal instead of plastic. My Nikon flash is metal and for good reason!

I use this as a transmitter with new Elinchrom BXR moonlights and it works wonderfully. It attaches easily to the hotshoe and it works right out of the box with the default settings.

Comments about Elinchrom Skyport SPEED Transmitter:

I use this to trigger my RX-series strobes and Quadra. I also use it with a Unversal Skport Receiver to trigger my Speedlights when used together with the Quadra. The Speed feature now allows me to get a full 1/250 sync speed without banding on my Nikon bodies. The improved locking feature is much nicer also.

Solid construction and easy to set up. Much better than the cheap unit that came with the ElinChrom kit, which sometimes failed to trigger lights and lacked a locking ring.
Considered buying the Pocket Wizard, but opted for this unit due to cost and more than happy with decision.
                                      Has worked flawlessly so far.
