Wasn't excited when I read that Verizon only recommended a Western Digital MyBook but it does what it is supposed to do, I just hope it lasts as I haven't always had the best luck with Western Digital. Everything needed is in the box, you get the drive, a USB cable for connecting to a computer, the VERY important eSata cable, and a light weight but still bulky power adapter. Overall I am very happy with the drive, no need to format or prepare the disk, just connect and power up. My Verizon QIP 7216 recognized instantly and all that was needed was a "yes" click on screen via the DVR remote to enable and I was ready to record. Four stars was given for the large power connector that takes up precious space on my power strip and for the 3 month wait I had for getting it (I recommend calling B and H and special ordering as that was the only way I believe I was able to receive this and it was not as available as most drives online)

I purchased the exapnder to use with a DVR supplied by Cablevision, which use the Scientific-Atlanta SA8300HD. Functionally the drive works fine with the box, but there is a hidden fatal flaw that takes some time to discover: When the drive goes to sleep, the box does not spin it back up again, resulting in a box lockup when you power the DVR back on (that takes minutes to recover from) and loss of subsequent scheduled recording. This is a recognized problem with Cablevision, the SA8300 needs a drive that does not go to sleep in order to work properly. Functionally, I have no problem with this (letting the drive spin constantly), however neither the drive manufacturer (Western Digital), Cablevision, or Scientific-Atlanta indicate this anywhere on their respective sites. When I called Western Digital support to explain the problem, they told me there was no way to prevent the drive from speeping. When I called Cablevision, they knew exactly what the problem was before I even finished explaining it. As such, I will be returning the unit. The fault here lies squarly with all parties concerned. WD for not allowing any configurability, and Scientific-Atlanta for some really poor software design. Cablevision should also indicate on their web site, on the page for expanding the DVR, what issues the user may have with these devices, and specifically mention which brands don't work.

I am now searching for another eSATA external drive solution that doesn't go to sleep/spin down.

Comments about WD My Book AV DVR Expander:

The DVR expander hard drive simply works as expected with my TiVo from the cable company. You simply unplug the TiVo, connect the DVR expander, and turn the TiVo back on, as the directions with the expander explain. Follow the menus, and it simply works. Buying the expander was less expensive in the long run than paying the cable company a higher monthly fee for a TiVo with a larger built-in storage capacity. Having said that, Western Digital seems to over-price this item since it is essentially only a 1 TB hard drive.

Comments about WD My Book AV DVR Expander:

Needed it as a replacement for the expander drive that was on my TiVo Series 3 and just died. B&H assured me it was compatible - and they were right - just plugged it in and it worked. And with the lower price from B&H got the 3-year support plan & still quite a bit lower priced than buying it from TiVo.

Just hook this up to your existing DISH receiver via a USB cord, pay a $40 "activation" fee, and you have the ability to record, rewind, fast forward, etc. without the monthly fees normally associated with a DVR!

Comments about WD My Book AV DVR Expander:

My wife has fallen in love with this machine. She loves recording on our DVR and she was having a problem as the device was often completely filled. She now can save so much more, which is great since we take care of our Grandchildren. They also love the new device because they have so many more of "their" shows to watch. It was a very worthwhile investment.

Really easy to set up, and this was a lot less expensive than paying Verizon another $20 a month for additional DVR capabilities I didn't need. Just plug into the eSATA port, click a few menu options, off and running! This provides about 150 hours of HD Video recording, as far as I can tell.

Short: I plugged it in and it works.

Details: I have a Motoroloa DCX3400 (250GB) from Comcast in Chicago. I aggressively delete and I hover around 59-70%. A single recording night can skyrocket to 85% full. I purchased the WD on impulse not knowing there was a compatability list. I prayed that it would work. Now I have 5x the capacity, from 250gb to 1250gb.

The WD MyBook AV DVR Expander was very simple to set-up and worked instantly and seamlessly with my Comcast Xfinity whole-house DVR (Motorola RNG200N). Before hook-up, the DVR was at 90% capacity; after hookup it was at 27%. There are no new controls or menus to worry about, it simply increases your storage capacity.

Connected to my Fios cable box via eSata. A few clicks via the vz box and it was set up as the primary recording device. Seems to be working great. I hope that it lasts for many years.

This worked perfectly with my Pace TDC779X DVR. Setup was a breeze. Has been operating without a hitch. Gave me way more space than my DVR alone. Great Price too.

This item worked exactly as described. Hooked it up in no time to my Tivo Roamio Plus in no time. I'd buy it again. My 1TB plus moved instantly to 2TB which is plenty for the average user. I would buy it again without hesitation if I needed to buy one for a different DVR.

I use the 1TB DVR Expanders to store my Security Video's. I download 4/day unless there are other camera's I need to download. I am a self appointed "Neighborhood Watch" person who say's "NOT IN MY NEIGHBORHOOD". I especially like your price do to the fact that I'm on Disability Income.

Comments about WD My Book AV DVR Expander:

I use the product with a TiVo Premiere to get more space to record my tv programs I love to watch.

It was easy to set up came with a card for how to set it up with a tivo, also works with dish and DirecTV DVRs as well, it may be hard to get because the company Western Digital may not directly sell it but B&H had it and it was worth the money.

What's not great about it, nothing really.
