I had an Elganto EyeTV 250 Plus, but it was incapable of getting HD signals from the cable box or direct connection to cable. Elganto customer service said the HD DVD was the only option for me to get HD on my iMac.
This item isn't a DVR actually, it allows your computer hard drive to record the TV data, so one is a bit limited if they do not have quite a bit of available hard drive space.
That being said, it works pretty well. The HD recorded files are considerably larger than those created using the 250 plus and the EyeTV software. In order to get all digital cable channels to be available, the EyeTV HD DVR uses a dongle that has an IR "blaster" at its end that actually tunes the cable box.
I was worried that it would be a long drawn out series of trials and errors, but the blaster worked as it should the first time with the Comcast box I got (I had to exchange the basic box for a digital box with "component" output, not to be confused with "composite" output, which provides a lesser quality signal.
All in all, as of 9/1/2010, this was the best solution I could find to watch HD on my iMac.
Oh, and when I read "DVR" and saw the picture, I thought the thing would be big, but it is only about 6" square by 1.5" high.

Easy to use, works great, had no issues. Records off of cable/satellite box or DVR onto Mac in various formats and allows for backing video up on drives or discs. Videos can be viewed on Mac computer, iPhone, or iPad. Would recommend with no hesitation.

Comments about Elgato Systems EyeTV HD DVR:
I bought this to give my company VHS to DVD transfer capabilities, as it is hundreds of dollars cheaper than the cheapest video deck, and makes the process faster than it would be with a deck. However, some automatic feature I cannot seem to turn off, switches the video mode between PAL and NTSC if the signal quality gets too bad; sometimes even stopping the signal input completely. This interrupts the signal flow and leaves little "jump cuts" in the video. This makes trying to record peoples old home video tapes nearly impossible, as some of these tapes have degraded slightly over the years. Even the slightest jumpiness in the tape will set off this switching mechanism. Imagine trying to record a TV show with a slightly fuzzy picture.

The TV Guide software makes scheduling a breeze and there are multiple options for saving completed recordings. Setting up the hardware was simple enough but on the downside the IR blaster did not have my remote codes already installed and the "learning mode" was very labor intensive. After nearly an hour the software finally learned 0 through 9. I've used it for a week now and am very impressed. I haven't downloaded the iPad software yet but that's on my to-do list. The EyeTV software does provide the option of saving your recordings to iPad or iPod/iPhone format. Capacity for storing recordings is only limited to the hard disk space you provide.

Instead of being a DVR, the device is a Mac interface that streams compressed video via USB to a computer. Works as advertised for that and includes very handy format conversion utilities. Love it!

I work for a Church and I needed a way of capturing our HD output from our Datavideo SE-2000 tot he computer. And this works great!
Because it records in h.264 the files sizes are reasonable for average of 40min recordings.
And the functions that come with it in terms of scheduling, playlists and export options are really great.
So don't be fooled you can use this product for more than just plugging in your satellite box.

Used this device instead of an analog to digital converter for digitizing old 8mm videotapes. Quality limited by composite/S video connection. Yet now that job is done and I have a HD DVR. Comcast bill can drop as a result. Only problem has been rare program interrupts while recording.

We use this on a new 27" iMac connected to a dish network HD box. At first I wanted to connect it to the 2nd output of a dish dvr but found that the 2nd output is SD only so that was my only problem. The eyeTv installation couldn't be easier. Like other reviews I didn't like the remote control they send with it, but we probably wouldn't use it much even if it did work well[...]
