Product Highlights
  • Solid Neutral Density 1.8 Filter
  • Increase Exposure Length
  • ColorCore Technology

The Tiffen 4 x 4" ND 1.8 Filter is a solid neutral density filter providing a 6 stop exposure. This 1.8 density creates a darkening of the entire image, allowing you to photograph with a wider aperture or slower shutter speed than normally required. By slowing your exposure time or increasing your aperture, you are able to control depth of field and convey movement more easily. Neutral density filters do not affect the coloration of the image and are ideal for pairing with other filters.

This filter is made using ColorCore technology, a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass and grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch. This filter measures 4 x 4" / 101.6 x 101.6mm.

      Comments about Tiffen 4 x 4" ND 1.8 Filter:

I kid you not, I've been on sets where the camera/DP brought cheap filters to use on my Zeiss glass and their Canon L glass. We had an issue with some major ghosting that I couldn't figure out at first. Then it dawned on me: what brand filter is this guy using? When I saw he was using a cheap filter on a $2,000 lens I laughed and told him to find a trash can.Yes these are expensive. Yes they ARE worth it. When you shoot with high end glass you need high end glass in front of your lens. These don't do much unless you need them. DSLR video is great and has moved us forward in the way we think about low-budget production but that doesn't mean skimp. It means we have a new tool but we still need great tools to assist us.When shooting outside in the day these filters are ESSENTIAL. Let me repeat: ESSENTIAL. DSLR's do not (as of this writing) have any built in ND's like the AF100 does. I use a combination of AF100's and Canon DSLR's. The right tool for the right job etc. The one thing I always hated about my DSLR was shooting outside in bright light. But no more!If you're shooting above 1/50 shutter speed . . . your'e not shooting film. You're doing video. I wanted the film look so a 6 stop ND filter is great! The best part is on a DSLR I can adjust the ISO so much that I'm not worried about carrying 8 different ND's with me like you would with say, an Arri with a fixed ISO. Or film for that matter. I carry a ND.9, ND 1.8 and a circular polarizer (which gives an extra stop or 2 of ND. In most circumstances that's enough to let me shoot 1/50 at 2.8, ISO 100 in bright sun. I can even get down to 1.4 if I'm lucky. So if you need the film look outside, with a DSLR this is the way to go. Don't skimp. Don't go cheap. You'll regret it. You'll get ghosting, color shifts and a whole slew of problems. Of course going 4x4 allows me to use a matte box and buy 3 filters for 10 different lenses without worry.
