The x-large black Men's Stretch Thinsulate Gloves from Freehands are designed to be used when photographing outdoors in cold weather. The gloves have a waterproof and windproof backing and are lined with Thinsulate to keep you warm in the winter while being lightweight enough to wear in milder weather.

When photographing in cold weather you can open the finger tips so that you can more easily access small buttons on your camera, which might be difficult to access if you were wearing normal gloves. When you need to access buttons on your camera, simply pull back the thumb and forefinger tips of the gloves to reveal your fingers. The tips are secured in place by magnets until you are ready to cover your fingers again. The palm patch features a silicon grip to prevent your camera from slipping. The gloves are designed to fit snugly so you can hold and operate your camera easily. For a looser fit, order the next size up.

(Since I've tried both Large & Extra Large, I am reviewing them under both item numbers)
    1. Sizes run small, here are some hand measurements.
    2. Making them even warmer wearing by nitrile gloves underneath.

    1. As other reviewers state, the sizes run small and even then the Large was too small for my slim, medium sized man's hands. I then got the Extra Large; those are a better fit and none-too-large. To save others from making the same mistake, here are my hand measurements:

The standard measurement is around your knuckles with your hand extended flat with a tape measure across your palm. Do not clench your hand or include your thumb. Use your dominant hand, the right if you are right-handed, and the left if you are left-handed.

My hand measures 8.5" this way and the Extra Large is a snug fit. The Large is too small.

An additional measure is the distance from the tip of your longest, middle, finger to the web between it and your first (index) finger with hand flat and fingers next to each other. This is 3.5" on my hands. The Extra Large is barely long enough in this dimension for my hands.

    2. My hands still get cold very quickly and easily with even the best gloves. I make these gloves a bit warmer by putting disposable nitrile gloves over my hands before putting on these gloves. This way I still have some insulation over my thumb & index finger tips when the tips of this glove are flipped open . Be certain to wash off any powder on the nitrile glove before use; you do not want any powder getting into your camera.

Even then, if the temperature is below about 35 deg F (~0 deg C), I still need to use a handmuff with chemical hand warmers because my hands do not tolerate cold.

I used these gloves while trying to photograph eagles at Quabbin Reservoir in central Massachusetts (there were none, it turned out). I was on an exposed hilltop. Ambient temperature was about 20 degrees F, and there was a mild (not strong) breeze. The peel-back finger- and thumb-tips worked fine, and allowed me to adjust my camera and tele lens as I wished. My hands were warm for about 10 mninutes; then they started to chill and eventually became numb. I was able to get them functional again by putting my hands in my coat pockets, but that's not the point of buying the gloves in the first place. I'd recommend these gloves for medium-cold temperatures (i.e., just above freezing), but not for heavy-duty cold.

I used these before christmas as i hung outdoor lights. They worked well at keeping my hands warm for hours. I have bought a second pair, one for messy jobs and one for use with my camera.

Comments about Freehands Men's Stretch Thinsulate Gloves (X-Large, Black):

Need gloves to keep hands warm when you're trying to shoot in cold weather? Dont count on these if its really cold out. Not really warm when its 20º. I had to put on a thin glove and use hand warmers with these.
3 stars because if its 40-50º out, then these will be fine. any colder, expect hands to freeze.

I take a large sized glove and cadet in a golf glove (I have short fingers). I ordered the extra large and they are a comfortably snug but not tight fit. I wish I had these yesterday. The fingertips might be thin but it beats bare handing it when it's 30 degrees with a gusting wind.

Comments about Freehands Men's Stretch Thinsulate Gloves (X-Large, Black):

Nice snug fit, light-weight and seems well constructed. Hand stays warm, but the flaps covering the thumb and index finger have no lining, so even though they cover those digits when not in use, they provide little protection from the elements, paticularly when temperature goes below 25 degrees. Also, I have large hands, but had to buy an extra large size, and even that is a snug fit!

Comments about Freehands Men's Stretch Thinsulate Gloves (X-Large, Black):

4 Stars is for price/value. I believe I picked these up for under $. Normally I purchase XL gloves, but went with L to get a snug fit. After some initial use, the glove stretched a bit and fits perfectly now. The flippy parts over thumb and index finger are NOT thinsulate protected and that becomes apparent in colder (windy) temps. If you're not working in freezing temps, these gloves are a good value...

I got these for a trip to the arctic circle. Provided me with sufficient warmth and easy access to my cameras. They are fairly warm, and function great!

Size wise I would say go one larger than what you think.

Very nice gloves... only giving 3 stars because the sizes don't seem right.. or I have very large hands. Either way determining what your size is should be easier as it's very important for a good fit.

Used these both as is and with liners. With temps in the upper 20's (and my thumb and forefinger exposed to operate the camera) these gloves were great except for the finger tips. I lasted about 30 minutes before putting my hands in my pockets with hand warmers. With liners they were good for about an hour before my hands got too cold. Even with the thumb and forefinger inside the fingers, my finger tips got cold because there isn't any lining or thinsulate in the finger tips. So for really cold weather use hand warmers along with the gloves to keep your hands usable.

I have not put these to the test yet in cold weather, but as someone who wears gloves regularly, I have confidence in their intended use. The fit is good, not too bulky, and my hands warmed up quickly just trying them on in the house. The textured palm/finger surface grips aluminum and carbon fiber tripod legs well. Although the thinner fabric covering the tips of the thumb and index finger might let some cold in, you should be able to perform some dexterous tasks without folding them back to expose skin. I thought the little magnets embedded to hold back the folds were a gimmick, but they actually work very well to keep the tips free and clear of touchng things. Usually I just wear thinner gloves that allow me to make camera adjustments at the expense of not enough warmth. With these gloves I will not have to do that.

Glove seems well made. Magnets are a gimmick...velcro would have worked just as well. Fingers are some what short for an XL sized glove. I purchased specifically for shooting outdoor high school football in Oct.-Nov., so they'll probably work ok for my needs.

When the temp is below 20, with a little wind, these are really useless. The tips of my fingers became numb within minutes. To warm my hands, I had to remove the gloves and put my hands in my pocket - the same thing I always do when I don't have gloves with me.

Maybe they work when it's above 40, but then, I typically don't need gloves anyway. These just offer no protection in the fingers.

Magnets in the thumb and index fingers

I put these on at 21 degrees. Within a few seconds of stepping outside I felt coolness on the thumb and index fingers where the caps pull off and fold back. Still it is better than nothing at all. I intentionally left these gloves on to get the keys out of my pocket, and once in the car I pulled a Kleenex out of the box. I was able to get a single tissue, meaning you can handle your small gear easily with these. I got what I thought was the right size for me but they didn't come up high enough on the wrist. I noticed two magnets on the thumb and index finger so you can fold the tips back and keep them out of the way. So, don't take your memory card out with these caps in place, given that there is a rather strong magnet over the fingernail of the index finger and thumb. The leather front of these gloves worked great for gripping things, and would be good for cold metal tripods.

Purchased it for Winter trip and they are very good , light, and exposing the tip is the way to go instead of those touch enabled gloves...

These are everything I wanted in cold weather gloves. They are comfortable and easy to work in. I like the thumb and fore-finger flip back so I can easily get to the camera controls.

I did order a size larger than I would have thought by measurement, but I'm glad I did. They are a good fit.

A little large for my hands. Hands feel cold in sub-freezing temperature. Easy to open up finger tips for use of camera or smart phone. Would buy again.

Look great, feel great, clever (tiny magnets hold the tips open), are well constructed (i've had one run over by many cars and buses - i thought i'd left it in a Manhattan taxi but found it on the road 40 mins later), easy to pop the ends off/on to expose/cover the fingertips.

Their one, but significant, flaw? Although everything else IS lined, the removable tips (thumb and first finger) are NOT lined, so you get a bit cold pretty quickly, especially as there is an open join there too. Seems like a silly design oversight to me.

I'll be wearing thin liners underneath in the cold. Which kinda defeats the purpose.
