The Singh-Ray 82mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter - This neutral density filter gives you the capability to use fast film in bright sunlight. ND filters have several uses and offer the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. They enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters reduce the amount of light reaching the film.

When used with a digital camera, you can effectively see how this filter works. After the initial exposure, you can check your LCD image and then make whatever change in exposure you feel you need to enhance your image. By rotating the ring, you can either increase or decrease the ND effect. This will be especially useful when trying to achieve "blurred" or "panned" shots.

The filter contains "index" points to help you mark your spot. They do not represent actual ND settings , i.e. non-calibrated - but are there to help you re-set your filter when you wish to recreate the effect.

Note: Singh-Ray cannot predict when vignetting may occur - especially with very wide angle lenses. To avoid vignetting, adjust your focal length, position, and/or composition to remove the vignetting - use your digital camera's display for reference.

Front ring can accept a Mor-Slo 5-stop Solid ND Filter or a Cokin holder for ND Grad Filters 1
Front Min/Max density ring lets you adjust density from 2-2/3 to 8 f/stops

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

I used the 82mm Vari-ND Filter for waterfall day shots. I read all the reviews prior to purchasing it so understood what I was purchasing. It was easy to use and I relied less on the ND indicators and more on the time of exposure I was seeking when looking for longer exposures (by rotating the filter) - very nice to have one filter to use in a variable capacity vs changing filters constantly particularly when you are in a stream trying to shoot a waterfall. I read about the vignetting - I used it on a Canon L-seris 16-35mm lens and noticed vignetting at about 24mm. I don't think this is a problem if you plan your shot ahead and frame it to account for this. As far as the price goes - Read the reviews and make your choice - I believe it is worth the price. Attached is a 24mm HDR shot that shows nice blur and slight vignetting.

Excessive vignetting for up to 35mm. It is impossible to use in combination with Lee Filters on a 24-70 mm lens, the vignetting is permanent. Also it is extremely difficult to mount the Lee ring.

Good quality, nice packaging, and it probably does what it says it does, but it is not for wide angle landscape photography. Very disappointing, I should have gone for single stop ND filters.

The quality and versatility of this filter is fantastic. The ability to frame and focus a shot and then rotate the filter to get the desired effect couldn't be easier. No more stacking plastic filters and hoping I didn't move anything too far. With great image quality and endless creative possibilities, I wish I had bought this filter sooner.

Comments about Singh-Ray 82mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

I use this filter on both the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 and Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8. It's nicely built, performs well and certain f/ stops, and is easy to manipulate. However, on both lenses at the widest angles, it vignettes in the extreme corners forcing me to crop the frame which, of course, negates the wide angle effect.

I own other Singh-Ray filters and have been happy to use them. However, because a variable ND polarizer necessarily requires two pieces of optics and makes for a thicker than normal filter, I would have thought that at the premium coin Singh-Ray expects to get, it would have built an overall thinner filter to mitigate vignetting.

I would recommend that buyers consider cheaper alternatives. They may avoid vignetting no better than Singh-Ray does but you'll spend far less.

I had the 77mm thin version of this for years but have upgraded lenses which made it necessary to get the 82mm. This one works just as well as the other. On super wide lenses (24 and under) it does vignette a bit past a certain level.
Build quality is awesome and the optics don't color or degrade the image at all.

I use this as a general purpose ND-filter. It's wide variable range makes it extremely flexible and saved time & space. It is however VERY expensive and has extreme vignetting using maximum darkness setting combined with a wide (16mm) lens. This problem is easily handled by either zooming out a bit or turning the darkness setting down a bit.

Comments about Singh-Ray 82mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

Very high quality product as far as build and optics. Very expensive, however. I was on the fence for a long time as to whether it is worth it. So far I am very pleased and feel confident that this is something that will last. Has come in very useful in both video production and in time lapse photography.

Note that the polarizing effects make the filter unusable at it's strongest setting at focal lengths under 35mm or so. With it dialed back a bit there are no problems. Also as far as vignetting goes, using a 77mm to 82mm step up ring , there is corner-only vignetting up to just shy of 13mm on a Tokina 11-16 2.8 with a Canon550d. Certainly usable at 11mm with a slight crop, but YMMV. Rated 4 stars only for the cost.

It does what it is supposed to do.
It does vingette at the edges when down to 16mm on my 16-35, or when the density is increaded. Have to watch that.

                          The glass is clean/crisp/sharp.

This filter is great for DSLR video shooting in bright light. It enables a wider aperture while maintaining the 180 deg. shutter rule. Watch out for vignetting on the Canon 16-35.

Comments about Singh-Ray 82mm Vari-ND Variable Neutral Density Filter:

Considering the price paid for this item, I was expecting something along the lines of perfection, but unfortunately that is not the case. The markings on the outer rings should be listed as useless. Make your own I guess. There is considerable color shifting beyond eight stops. Of course it's not rated past eight stops, but it begs the question of where that eight stops is, and if there is color shifting at less then eight stops. Same goes for the cross hatching. Have'nt had the chance to find this out for sure yet since I've only had this item a couple days. If I were only taking pictures, I do believe I would return this item, but this is a cats meow for shooting movies, and will learn to live with it's shotcomings.
Also of note. A seperate polarizer such as a B+W KSM Circular will not work with this variable filter.

It's still a darn good filter, but not a great one, as the price should imply.

Easy to use and very high quality build. Would have liked the rotation points to be somewhat calibrated but...such is life. Will use this with landscape and outdoor portraits where the backlight needs to be tamed.

Used it all the time to get the water motion effect and you don't have to wait for darker hour. Wipe out the people in a busy downtown street scene can be done with amazing result. Small, compact to carry in your bag at the time.
