The two features that separate the SBH Series Ball Heads from others are Vanguard's Single Piece Ball Unit Technology that incorporates ball and stem into one solid unit which provides a core strength that is resistant to degradation from everyday use and the Advanced Magnesium Housing System which couples a rugged magnesium exterior with a hollow interior to provide the precision, fluid-like movements of a standard head minus extraneous weight. This head only weighs 15.9 oz (450 g).

The SBH-100 comes with two QS-39 quick release plates which makes it really easy and convenient to remove one camera from the ball head and replace it with another.

I use this for Studio style Photography on large groups, Macro Studio work, portraits in general and landscape. It Locks in to place with my Canon 7d with installed battery grip and 70-200 2.8 L series lens with no problem. Keep in Mind this supports up to 22 lb. so its not going to be light weight and its going to turn with resistance. you hold it in your hand and it feels like Quality, not garbage. the second plate was nice as i Have an 70D and 5d mark III will be getting the Vanguard Alta Pro 264AB 4-Section Aluminum Tripod with this head from BH next week. I am currently using it on my Zeikos 77" 3-Section Heavy-Duty Aluminum Tripod to replace the OEM 3-Way Pan Head that came with it. I added a photo with the camera and 70-200 all together just to show it will hold the weight even with the plate on the camera not the lens making it even more top heavy.

I use this as a general tripod camera mount.

On the plus side it's sturdy and can hold a lot of weight securely. It's also economical.

But it is plagued with a major problem: tightening up the knobs make the holder move, making precision framing difficult and frustrating. Seems even worst in cold weather. Also, the knob for tightening up the camera to the ballhead is too big, so you have to be careful how you orient the camera since the knob can hit the body and get in the way of portrait orientation.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

I may have purchased this for different reasons than most buyers. I added to an "ok" tripod that already had good tilt and pan adjustments. I got the unit for the quick release feature. It was always a chore to fumble with the set bolt to mount my camera to the tripod, and in the dark (I do astronomy photography) it was virtually impossible. The quick release seemed away to end that frustration in my life, and it succeeds well. When I saw 2 quick release plates were included in the SBH-100 for $[$], I was sold.I'm sure the extra tilt options and the nice (2) leveling bubbles and 360 degree marked panning will come in handy some time, but the quick release for the camera & a heavy zoom telephoto will get used a lot.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

The head does exactly what you'd expect it to. It looks firmly when tightened and has a very good and smooth range of motion when each segment is untightened. The bubble levels are both well placed. The rotating measurements at the bottom are helpful for taking panoramic images.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

I use this with my Alta Pro 254 Carbon Fiber tripod. It is compact in size, but rated for 22 pounds of equipment support...Much more than for my needs with 500mm + lenses. The ball and clamping is very tight with minimal pressure and stays in position even when walking with a long lens mounted. The quality in manufacturing is evident and I expect it to be very durable for a long time...

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

I'm a highly published photographer i.e. Conde Nast Traveller UK, Lexus (cars) Magazine, Afar etc, and I've a background in Aerospace design. I'm astounded at the quality of this ball head and their whole line really at this price. Most others like Benro are at least $100 more for the exact same quality. It is simply and example of superb engineering and tolerances. A comparison would be how Japanese products of the 80's were so inexpensive and yet had better quality than anything out there. I bought three of them, I liked them so much. One negative though is the the 3/8-16 insert on the bottom was so tight on two of them I had to use a hammer and screwdriver to force it out and the bottom got scratched up which is no big deal, but it was very, very hard to remove. They need to address this.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

Moving from a pan/tilt head to a ball head, I enjoy the ease of changing a shot quickly with only one control.

The main knob is easy to adjust, loosen more to quickly move the camera, or loosen slightly to get more tension and make more precise adjustments, as all ball heads I assume.

The two stage locking mechanism of the quick release plate sticks from time to time and requires a fair bit of force to release. Though I'd much rather it be difficult to release than for it to fall out due to weak locks.

The bubble levels look nice, but offer little use to me. From time to time I'll take a quick look if I'm making a small change, but I typically just eyeball it.

I've yet to get any creeping after fulling tightening the knobs, but I'm working with a light setup.

The quick release plates (2) that come with the head are nice and small. They attach with a flat head screw driver slot and do not have a D ring like others for attaching to straps.

If the head's weight limit fits your setup (Though I've been told you should double your gear's weight when looking at tripods), it's a solid choice that won't cost you too much.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

I've got a Vanguard Alta Pro 253 CT bundled with SBH-50 ballhead on a Christmas special. The SBH-50 feels light and doesn't have a separate pan control so I ordered the SBH-100. B&H had the best price around and their service is always great. This ballhead is awesome. It carries my D-800 with 28-300 lens (close to 5 lbs) with ease. The tripod has a tilting center column and I tried very punishing angles, no problem. A slight release of the knobs allows smooth movement, very easy to fine tune. Panning for panos, excellent. Every feature is high quality and feels solid. I'm very happy with this purchase.

Got his sbh-l00 ball head for my Vanguard Alta 263ACH tripod. Very pleased with it. Already had the pistol grip for this tripod but wanted this ball head as it is a little shorter, now the tripod will fit in my suitcase when traveling and not as heavy.. Also find it easier for outdoor shooting. Works very smoothly and solid construction. Well designed and highly recommend. One complaint, they advertise a rebate coupon on this item and called twice and was told they wouldsend me an e-mail with info.Been a couple weeks and no e-mail. Would have given 5 stars but for the coupon issue.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

Impossible to level if any part of the rotate or ball tension release is loose. Since you must loosen these to change the position you're constantly going back and forth readjusting to try and find level. If you shoot panoramic photos and must be on a level line you will not like the ball head. For anything else it's perfect.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

I use this ball head on my dynamic perception stage zero motorized slider for my canon t2i. Its the perfect size and doesn't get in the way of the motor. This is my first ball head so I'm not an expert when it comes what good ball heads are like, but that said I think this one is very solid. The locks work very well. It supports my canon t2i with battery grip and my 11-16mm tokina f/2.8 lens easily and it has never moved from its locked position. The panning is also very smooth. I am very pleased with the product. No problems thus far.

This is a good sturdy ball head with 2 bubble levels. It's nicely designed with sturdy construction. I don't think you can beat it for the price. My only minor criticism is that I had a very difficult time removing the 1/4" screw adaptor/insert.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

I bought the SBH-100 as a solution to one problem, and a partial solution to another:

                                    1) The SBH-100 has an independent pan lock. This makes taking panoramic shots of skylines and whatnot rather less complicated.

Y'see, I also own a Gorillapod Hybrid tripod, and the ball head included with it has a pan lock that kicks out if you release the tension on the ball just the right amount (if you can snatch the pebble from my hand, Grasshopper...).

I should say right here that I did NOT buy the SBH-100 to put on my Gorillapod Hybrid. That would be, as they say in the trades, Just Plain Silly. In fact, I bought it because:

                                    2) I bought a Gorillapod Focus for my DSLR gear, and needed a ball head for it (the Focus does not include one).

                                    So how is it? Well,

                                    1) It fits nicely on and with the Gorillapod Focus.

                                    2) It feels like it's built like a tank. There's nothing flimsy about this thing that I can tell. All locks and clamps are secure, and do their part to hold the DSLR and attached heavy lenses very nicely in place.

                                    3) It has two spirit levels, which is also handy for pano shots when your Gorillapod is holding your camera at some strange angle and you want to be sure your camera has the same attitude as you move it around.

                                    4) It comes with two quick release plates. I can leave one on the DSLR, and the other on the G1 X (though this is, of course, overkill for the latter...).

                                    5) It has an entirely independent pan lock.

So it's very nearly ideal. The only thing that stops me from giving it five stars is that, when you're tightening up the two locks, they can move ever so slightly, thus throwing off (ever so slightly) the levels that you've worked to centre.

It don't know if this latter is endemic to all of these types of ball heads (I've only ever owned this one) or a function of the owner or setup, but all the same that doesn't stop me from recommending it highly. It does what it was designed to do very nicely.

My first ball head that I've gotten. I've used a cheap tripod set that came as a package with my camcorder. It was very difficult and cumbersome to use. This set is very good and versatile. The pan and ball friction are on two different knobs which is allows for easy adjustment

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

Works awesome, is very solid. Well built. Like other reviews say, when you tighten down on the ball it does move a small amount as it settles in (probably common among ball heads unless you go really expensive). If you set it so fairly tight but not all the way down you can make some small adjustments after tightening which solves the problem.

Comments about Vanguard SBH-100 Ball Head:

I currently have three tripods, and my biggest dissatisfaction has always been the head. So after much reading, discussion and hand wringing, I bought the Vanguard SBH-100. I was pleased with it as soon as I took it out of the box. This is a precision made, solid piece of equipment, at an outstanding price. It comes with 2 quick change plates, and a screw adaptor so the head can be attached to either a 1/4" or 3/8" stud. It moves smoothly and clamps down tightly with no movement at all. It's adveritsed to hold up to 22 lb, and while I haven't tried that much weight, it's more that adequate for my Pentax K-5 and any of the lenses have. I read some reviews saying the mechanism moved when the knobs were tightened down. I did not find this to be the case.

In particular, I am impressed with the operation of the quick change shoe. It has a safety button AND a screw knob. The whole thing feels solid, safe and secure when the camera is attached, so you don't have to worry about something bad happening to your camera. For the price this is a great buy.
