Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. Another benefit of the lens' extension is some additional protection from accidental impact.
The Kalt 58mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood folds down and can remain on the lens permanently because it only lengthens the lens minutely in its collapsed state, requiring hardly any additional space in the gadget bag. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm). Double threaded to accept filters.

This is attached to a 70-300 mm zoom, and with all that glass and all those elements inside such zooms, a lens hood is essential to prevent flare, in my experience. I'd have preferred a metal hood, but this has the advantage of folding down while still attached so the lens fits better in the gadget bag, Plus it can be unfolded in sections so that -- on a wider optic -- it could be extended just enough top cover that particular field of view. Like other Kalt hoods this one is inexpensive and works as advertised. Will it last as long as the lens? Maybe not, but replacing it won't break the bank.

Somewhat effective vs. flare, shows up in the picture at wider focal lengths (around 28-32mm), does not retain a circular shape. At least mine didn't. It looks oval. On the positive side, it's cheap, it's flexible, and it offers some protection for your lens. Great thing is that you can just fold it over on itself when you need to take a wide angle shot, so no need to remove it.

Comments about General Brand 58mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
I got this for my 50mm f/1.4 prime lens for my Canon Rebel T2i. It works and collapses nicely and I haven't taken it off since. The only complaint I have is that it looks a bit cheaply-made, with the rubber and plastic parts seeming to have been hastily glued together. In addition, the rubber hood is splotchy. These minor quibbles aside, however, I am quite pleased with this hood and would get more for other lenses as well as recommending it to other photographers.

The rubber hood attaches tight to the lens and can fold back when not needed. Rubber material attracts dust, which can stick to the lens.

Comments about General Brand 58mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
Nice, simple lens hood. Nothing fancy. Beware that if this is used on the kit 18-55mm lens that at 18mm you will start to see the hood in the corners of the picture. To remedy this simply roll up the hood when taking pictures at the 18mm setting of the zoom lens. Otherwise no issues.

I was not sure about getting this Lens Hood, but the Canon Hard lens hood for the 50mm was out of stock and for the price [$] I thought, why not try it. It was a little hard to get screwed in, but after that it does the job and I do like how it folds down when you are ready to store in your camera bag. I wish it was a true "black" color to match my camera instead of the black with like white stuff or something. However, for the price - I am satisfied with this Lens Hood. Will probably buy more for different lenses.

Comments about General Brand 58mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
I use this product on my Canon t2i for outdoor shooting. This is a very useful alternative to more expensive, brand name lens hoods. The folding rubber gets it out of your way when you don't need it. The price is spot on and it easily screws on to any 58mm standard lens. The ridges on the outside actually help for easier manual focusing.

Comments about General Brand 58mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
This is a great hood. Since it's flexible it can stay on my lens the whole time, it fits easily into camera cases, and doesn't interfere with the manual focus ring. The price is right too. Over all a great and eminently useful product.
