Lens hoods are primarily designed to prevent unwanted stray light from entering the lens by extending and shading the end of the lens. Another benefit of the lens' extension is some additional protection from accidental impact.
The Kalt 72mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood folds down and can remain on the lens permanently because it only lengthens the lens minutely in its collapsed state, requiring hardly any additional space in the gadget bag. It is designed to match the focal length of standard lenses (50mm). Double threaded to accept filters.

Comments about General Brand 72mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
I like how it is soft enough to fold inside my gadget bag yet offers a level of protection to the lens & camera.

Comments about General Brand 72mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
Works ok but has vignetting on my 18-200 lens. Have to push against the window a bit harder.

Comments about General Brand 72mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
We use these on all our lenses in conjunction with our own design of mattebox. When extended the hood seals against the mattebox and retracted it makes a protective collar for the lens in storage. Complaints in some reviews that the hood vignettes are due to mis-application of this standard hood to wide angle lenses. If you are shooting wide lenses, use the wide hood.

Comments about General Brand 72mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
When I sought the advice of one of the sales associates, he suggested that I use this less expensive but good alternative to a 'hard hood'(which was temporarily out of stock). I've used the soft rubber hood for about 2 months and think it is great. It works like the hard hood, but allows me to store my camera in my purse-like bag by just pushing on the rubber and collapsing the hood. Now, I don't have to purchase a larger carrying bag, as my existing bag fits my current needs. If the hood is not needed while shooting photos, I just collapse it. Really good choice.

Comments about General Brand 72mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
This product is well made enough for the price, however when I used it with my Raynox 6600 (.66 wide angle converter) on my Canon HV 20 camcorder the lens hood was visible in the corners at full wide (which isn't really all that wide--about equivalent to a 35 mm lens on a 35 mm camera). For this reason I cannot recommend this product.

Comments about General Brand 72mm Screw-In Rubber Lens Hood:
its great because it blocks the sun but then its horrble because it cuts out the corners of your shot. So unless you are looking for that kind of effect then you shouldn't get this product.
