Being an battery, there isn't a whole lot to say about it. The thing is, if you own a Sony NEX 5, you really need to carry at least one extra battery. These cameras eat electricity the way an Olds 98 went through gas. This isn't necessarily a function of the battey, but more of the camera. The LCD display and the menu jumping consume a lot of power. Another charging unit would be useful as well, to carry in the bag.

The LCD protector kit is also a must-have. For the price, you can't go wrong. Sony is suppossed to be coming out with an adaptor that snaps on the back of the camera, but until they arrive on these shores, this is a good, cheap alternative.

I bought this item as a spare with my Sony a7 earlier this year (Jan 2014). It was identical to the battery that came with my camera. Made in Japan, the label on the battery says that it is "min 1020mAh" and "typ 1080mAh". Regardless, the a7 sucks the power out of these batteries in no-time. If you're shooting all day, you'll probably need at least two fully charged batteries to get through it.Last week (Jul 2014), I bought 5 more batteries using the same B&H part number as before, SONPFW50. The new batteries are different than the originals. They are noticeably lighter in weight and the back says they are rated at 1020mAh. No mention of 1080mAh. And they are made in China, not Japan. I am concerned that they will not maintain a charge as long as the original batteries I bought 6 months ago.I'm disappointed that Sony and B&H have substituted an obviously cheaper product for the same-priced original batteries that I bought earlier this year. At minimum, I think the part number and description should have been updated to reflect the difference.

I have been burned in the past with off label batteries that are "authorized" re-sellers. I use this battery in my Sony NEX-6 for power hungry applications like Macro and underwater photography and get a couple of hours of use on a full charge. For something as critical as the lifeblood of your camera, don't go with anything less than the best.

There are alternative options to this battery, but I would reccomend getting this original Sony, it does last longer and I suspect the overall lifetime will be longer with this product than one of the generic brands.

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1080mAh):

I haven't used the battery that much yet, but so far it seems like a regular replacement of the one that is already in the camera. I bought it for our upcoming vacation, but since you actually have to charge the battery INSIDE the camera, I'm not sure how useful it really is. With an external charger, you could recharge one while you use the other one, but as it is, a second battery really only comes in handy when you're away for a long trip without access to electricity. That hasn't happened to me yet, but then at the same time the A6000 doesn't have the best battery life, so who knows, it might come in handy after all.

I bought an a6000 to take to Europe as I didn't want to lug my 70D and a few lenses all over the place. I picked up a second spare battery and have exhausted BOTH during normal walking tour shooting and just a few videos (auto-off set to 1 min). My Canon batteries are nearly impossible to deplete during a full day of heavy shooting and with a grip, forget it.

Yes, I understand the Sony battery and camera size is smaller and will yield less. I just didn't expect that I would need three in a day to make it through morning to evening. For the casual user you should be just fine and never have to worry about it.

Due to size constraints of Sony A7r I understand why the battery needs to be physically small. Only wish they could get more amp hours into it. The EVF and LCD draw power all the time and drain the battery pretty quickly. Solution, buy lots of extra batteries and keep them fully charged.

You need to buy many batteries if you plan to go out to the field, so at leaf you have enough energy for a full day outing, until you get back to a location with electricity.

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1080mAh):

I bought 2 more of these in addition to the one that came with my a6000. So far I've only charged them up in the Watson AC/DC charger for them. They took a few hours each to charge, but I don't think they were completely discharged. What I like about these batteries is they extend my time out taking pictures. It is estimated my camera will get 310 stills / battery charge and the 32GB SDHC card will hold about 10 battery charges before it is full. So more batteries the longer I can shoot creative shots.

Comments about Sony NP-FW50 Lithium-Ion Rechargeable Battery (1080mAh):

I bought this battery to go with my Sony Nex 5T so a second battery is essential. The battery holds it's charge. The battery doesn't come charged so you will need to charge it. I reccommend picking up a battery charger. I've had a bad experience with cheaper batteries in the past, so I decided to go with the official brand this time. However, it costs twice as much as cheaper versions, which is why I knocked a star off. The bottom line is, if you need a spare battery this is the one to go with.

I'm happy with Sony products. Two things that they can improve on:1. Make a battery that holds a charge longer 2. When you buy one of their premium cameras a battery charger should be included. Let's go Sony!!!!
