The Sony NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens Handycam is the first-ever large sensor video camera, merging the rich colors, enhanced light sensitivity, and shallow depth-of-field of video DSLRs with the shape, size, and functionality of a camcorder. That means no more rigging out your video-enabled DSLR with accessories that cost twice as much as the camera--and no more funneling your video through the tiny sensors and fixed lenses of camcorders past.
Along with access to Sony's growing line of E-mount and already established A-mount lenses (using an optional adapter), the NEX-VG10 provides an APS HD CMOS sensor that measures over 19 times the size of a conventional camcorder's! This translates into a significant upgrade in pixel size and image quality, allowing you to record truly cinematic-looking video that gives you creative control over what's in focus and what's not. Whether shooting 1920 x 1080 video or 14.2MP stills, creative control is the order of the day--from manually adjusting iris, shutter speed, white balance and gain to finding the perfect lens to capture the world as you see it.
And if you need a little extra help keeping your images sharp and steady, the included 18-200mm OSS zoom (and its E-mount alternatives) is video-optimized to silently autofocus while providing optical image stabilization for potentially shaky shots. As on so many other camcorders, a bright, high-resolution 3" LCD screen swivels 180° for maximum viewing flexibility. (Try that on a 7D!) Further distinguishing the NEX-VG10 is an included Quad Capsule stereo microphone, which adds the precise, high-quality audio you'll need to match the lushness of your images. Headphone and external microphone jacks give you even more audio control.
Of course, once the video has been captured (to your choice of Memory Stick or SD/SDHC card), you'll want to show off what you've done. The NEX-VG10's AVCHD video is fully compatible with all editing software and can be easily burned to Blu-ray disc for HD playback. To make things even easier, Sony is including a free download of its popular--and extremely versatile--Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10, giving you all the tools you'll need to shoot and share the kinds of images that were once only the province of the pros!
(High Definition AVCHD discs can be created using standard DVD media, the supplied software and a compatible PC. DVD media containing AVCHD footage may be played on a compatible Blu-ray Disc player/recorder, PC with supplied software or PlayStation3 devices. DVD media containing AVCHD footage should not be used with standard DVD based players, as the DVD player may fail to eject the media and may erase its contents without warning.)

Just received this camera yesterday so this is very early impressions.... Very compact, well balanced design. No touch screen which I like- no finger prints on screen! The menus are all logically layed out button and roller system on the left side of the camera. Has easy to access Shutter and Aperture Priority modes and the big sensor gives a VERY shallow depth of field. The one BIG drawback I just noticed is that there is no variable zoom on this camera. The only way to zoom is rolling the lens manually like an D-SLR. One of the drawbacks to interchangeable lenses, I guess.
Also, I haven't exhausted the battery yet but according to the manual, the battery only lasts 90 minutes! I used a similar Panasonic this summer and it lasted six hours!
Will update with further observations soon.

Like any first generation electronics, this one needs major improvement in its autofocus. I tested the autofocus under ideal lighting conditions and half of the time it was focusing on what's behind my subject even if my subject occupied half of the frame. In poor lighting conditions, kit lens is too slow even with maximum aperture opening. Pushing up the gain only increases color noise. But when I mounted my Nikon 28-70mm f2.8D with an adapter and went on manual focus, there was a major improvement in the quality of the video. With the non-Sony adapter, it will only allow you to manual focus. You need to use lens with aperture rings as this is also manual. If you use DX lenses w/o the rings, it will default on its smallest opening.
It's a great camcorder (compared to what's out there in the market) only because it allows me to use my existing lenses. The APS-C sized sensor is a bonus here.
So why not a Canon 5D Mark II or a 7D? Well, I would say both have the same video quality since I can now use my Nikon pro lenses. I'm a firm believer of using the right tools for the right job.
As for sound, forget the built-in mic and get an XLR mic with a pre-amp (Juicedlink or BeachTek)if you want professional sounds.
I just wish Sony offered this with the option of purchasing just the BODY ONLY like Nikon or Canon. Otherwise, I would have saved $700+ on some kit lens.
Bottomline, if you know its limitations and know how to go around it, it's a great camera with lots of potentials.

Comments about Sony NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens Handycam Camcorder:
This a great camera. The image quality is quite amazing. It has a great depth of field, very sharp 24Mbps HD, real life color reproduction, and 11x optical zoom is pretty handy. It does come with its share of problems though. For one thing, the manuel zoom is hard to work with at best. But I guess this is a problem that DSLRs have as well. (and this problem was corrected in its prediscesor the vg-30) The only other thing that is not the greatest with this camera is the low light is not very good. But all in all this is a very good camera for the price. I wouldn't expect to get a perfect camera for the price of this one. One more thing. I have never worked with a camera that has a built in mic that I could actually use for production. This mic is very good. Most of the time we use a shotgun mic, but when its easyer, I don't have a problem using the vg10's mic.

This is our third VG-10. Let me start by saying: let's not forget the price Range: B&H is offering this for $[$]. this is an AVCHD camcorder with interchangeable lenses: Sony E mount and other brands (we have a full line of Nikon G lenses) using the optional adaptor... Amazing Picture quality ... Great sound using built-in mike... Great stills ... Gorgeous DOF thanks to the huge APCS Exmor ... Enough said! I read all the reviews that talked about "wish it had this function and that function" the truth is if it did it would have to cost more money! the new VG-20 corrects some of the function placements and adds 24p (which I never needed in my business anyway) but still it is $650 more! when you are using these camecorders for business cost becomes a factor. We use these cameras for interviews and documentaries and we love their quality, practicality and final product. although I love the built-in mike, we also use a wireless mike system for our more focused sound result. I would strongly recommend this to anybody trying to get professional results but cannot spend the 3K+ you need to get a full function "Pro" camcorder.

Comments about Sony NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens Handycam Camcorder:
Bought this camera to record some memories at our family reunion. The battery took about 9hrs. to fully charge the first time and about 5hrs. every time after. Sound quality was better than anything else I have experienced in a built in mic.
The zoom took some time to get used to since you have to manually zoom with the lens itself, but after a day or two I think I had a pretty good handle on it. I hold the camera in a strange way to make it comfortable to hold and record, but some people watching me think it looks uncomfortable.
This camera also takes pictures, but so far I have only been able to take pictures while not recording. The image quality of the pictures is comparable to my sister's Nikon DX 1000. Much better than I expected from a camcorder.
Bottom line: Awesome camera with great sound and image. No built in light, but it did not bother me since I have not recorded in the dark, even low light is good looking. Experiment with ways to hold the camera so that you can zoom the lens and hold it still for long periods (not as hard as you think, thought it may look funny to others.) Will buy Sony again!

We purchased this for a documentary. Sadly, we were not able to even test it out to see how well it works. There is no cervo zoom - manual only. Shocking, as cervo zoom is equivalent to windshield wipers on a car. You just assume they all have them. So this may be a great camera. But for the reasons stated above, it did not serve our purpose.

I have had this for 3 months and it works great. It also takes fantastic photos. The video quality is excellent. I see alot of negative comments about low light but I don't think it a fair. My VG10 works very well in low light. The mic is amazing and it's great for documentary filming. The stock lens is fantastic - to say the least and is even better than some comprable Nikon lenses that I own. It took some time getting used to but once you get used to it your off flying. I reccomend this to anyone that really wants to shoot video without spending more than 2k.

Comments about Sony NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens Handycam Camcorder:
I use Sony Vegas Pro 10 so I was sceptical about the accompany software PMB manager. I used many multimedia managers before but PMB is truly a class above the rest, it really accentuates this beautiful instrument well when porting your files to the computer (as well as organizing your existing files.
As an amature astronomer, I've always challenged my cameras to star and moon shots as a test of low light capability and F/shutter options. I hope my upload works for this review, I think you may agree- this camera can.
As stated in the title, unless you are using the $500.00 accessory flash (which makes taking bad flash pictures impossible), the automatic settings are not always the best, many trial photos have come out grainy even in good light, but once I get used to manual settings, same condition photos come out great now!
The Sony menu items and options have not changed much from the previous Sony models I've owned (since they produced the floppy disk camera), so getting adjusted to where options are placed was a quick learn for me, there's just many more options now.
I recommend you accessorize, buy the Sony xx58 model flash, the high output battery and ND/polorizers etc. for different lighting scenes. Restated: instead of 2k, spend 3k, you will be glad you did.
One tick off for design just because the thing's so heavy, you need a mono/tripod for any long shoot. The solid state capture is nice and file transfer is fast as can be. If you're spending this money, you have a nice computer that can too.
Vast array of Emount (and A if you go that route) lenses make this a good choice for flexible options camera.

I purchased this camera as an upgrade for my own small business. I needed a camera that had the features of a pro camera such as the manual focus ring and the adaptability of changing out lens. This camera fits that nitch perfectly. The quality of my videos went up instantly. If you're just making the move from consumer to pro I highly recommend this camera.

I just bought this about 30 days ago after previously having a lesser consumer sony HD camcorder. I am a novice camcorder photographer and have only recently embraced the visual world. I have been a DJ for 15 years. I think this camera is amazing and it is everything and beyond what i expected. It truly is a great camcorder. It is a bit pricey but I feel it's worth it. I have been taking AMAZING photos and video. I bought it for the video capabilities but soon I was drawn to the photo aspects. I am not a pro but I feel that this is a great camera for someone who wants to get in to it. I read some people bash it because of it's limited ability etc. These people should be beyond this camera if that's the case. It's a consumer camera with actual professional capabilities. I think SONY got it right on the money with this. There are few things I would change but all in all it's right on.

Why didn't it exist in the last 30 years?...
Unbelievable clear image at low ligth situations, but not the same when attached to sony 1118 super wide angle lens, unfortunately.
Just check soon some of my footages at youtube. Search for Celio Barros.
