Questions? Ask our experts:

The ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer offers a lightweight, affordable solution to keeping your DSLR or camcorder stable during handheld shooting. Its ergonomic design and adjustable chest brace allow it to fit comfortably over your body, while the interchangeable mounting platforms make either a video or still camera equally at home. And with the Elements foam handgrip, you get additional stability and control when shooting video with a DSLR.

The stabilizer's camera tie-down screw extends between 1/4 and 9/16" above the camera platform. The tie-down screw height is adjustable and allows you to attach a side variety of cameras to the stabilizer. Composed of high-density plastic and weighing 2 lb, the entire Recoil unit folds up neatly for easy storage.

Affordable & Ergonomic
Affordability and comfort have never been synonymous with camera shoulder rigs--until now. The Recoil is smooth and easy to use, with a shoulder piece that "hooks" to your body. And with the adjustable chest brace, the camera's weight is evenly distributed across your frame.
Perfect For Your Camera
Whether your camera of choice is an HMC-150, a Canon 5D Mark II, Sony NEX-VG10 or another prosumer camera, you're covered with the Recoil. The included large baseplate and riser baseplate give you flexibility and adjustability, no matter your preferred form factor, for any camera weighing up to 10 pounds. Even weight distribution and a stable camera platform will keep you shooting for hours on end. A built-in adjustment wheel allows you to vary the length of the tie-down screw from 1/4 to 9/16".

I'm just getting around to using my Canon 7D as a video camera, and have found that my skills are simply not developed sufficiently to where my handheld shots are as stable as I'd like them. Because I am not a seasoned professional videographer, I'll never get the hours of practice required to improve this. So, it became apparent that I needed some sort of shoulder support for the camera. I started searching B&H, and within minutes became overwhelmed by the assortment of shoulder-mounting systems (and the prices thereof). Don't get me wrong; I firmly believe that you get what you pay for. However, not knowing if a shoulder support would even correct the shakiness of my video, I wasn't prepared drop a grand (or more) to experiment, B&H's generous return policy notwithstanding.

I chatted with a B&H rep, explaining that I was using a 7D w/ a Zacuto Pro viewfinder, and asked what sort of reasonably-priced shoulder solution he might recommend. In a few minutes, he directed me to the Ikan shoulder support. The price was certainly reasonable, at under a hundred bucks. The reviews were generally good, too, so I pulled the trigger and bought the system.

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much from a support so often described as "plastic," but when it arrived (housed in a nice little black velvet bag, I might add), I was pleasantly surprised. The system feels fairly substantial, and once I figured out the proper camera placement on the Zacuto gorrilla plate, the whole rig felt quite sturdy. I immediately set about shooting some footage, and yep, as I hoped, my stuff was indeed less shaky. Of course, I'll have to use it more "in the field," so to speak, but the bottom line for me is that, until I decide that I need/want a more elaborate shoulder rig, this Ikan system should serve me well as my skills progress.

One thing I haven't yet tried is whether this rig would work with a battery pack installed. It seems that the camera would be a bit too high to use the Zacuto VF in this way, but I'll hook it up and see.

My personal advice: if you're looking to try out a good-quality shoulder mount for a DSLR without taking out a second mortgage, the Ikan shoulder mount should definitely be in the running. I'd buy it again, and I'd give it as a gift to my DSLR-shooting mother-in-law!

I used the product with a much heavier camera than the specifications and my footage came out better than i had expected. With a smaller camera, you can control your steadiness with ease, and for around $100.

I like this thing! I video long music shows and am unable to use a tripod so this works well. It would be nice if the shoulder pad had actual padding instead of just rubber. Also, the rubber pad looks like it might come unglued, but I guess I could fix that if it happens. I haven't used the extender/grip accessory but will when I soon start shooting on a DSLR. I would buy this thing again if I needed to.

I got this after trying to hand hold my DSLR while shooting video. Personally I just used the hand grip without the shoulder mount. After opening I did have a plastic knob fall off, lucky it was an allen wrench bolt and I have a bunch of those.

Once suffered through a wedding holding my Canon XH A1s. Some shots were not too steady. Usually I do sports with a tripod. So with an impending party to shoot, I found this on the B&H website and took a shot. In was inexpensive, and I am broke. Let me tell you, it worked great!!!

Comments about ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer:

This thing is great! Folds nicely, very comfortable to use, and stabilizes nicely. I use it to video live bands and artists and it serves my needs very well. The grip screw could be a little better designed to allow tightening to be easier, and the screw that holds the chest piece doesn't lock very well, so if you have a heavy pull on the handle it could slip. Otherwise great construction!

Comments about ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer:

It's a stabilizer and that's what it does. I use it for video and it's a big improvement over having nothing. It also seems to work better than cheap gimbal rigs. I started using it with an NEX-7 - a nice light camera - and the results have been very good. Then, just for kicks, I stuck my SONY FS-100 on there - that big, heavy box. And I attached the eyepiece - and much to my surprise - I could get the eyepiece right up against my eye while holding the whole thing steady. I'm not going to pretend that this is a replacement for a $ rail system. But the fact is - it works reasonably well - it's compact, well made - easy to use, easy to store and well worth the money.

Comments about ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer:

This is the first stabilizer I have purchased, and I have got to say that for the price, it was great. I use mostly prime lenses on my Canon and this really helped get rid of most of the shake. Granted it wont completely solve the issue, but with some practice and smooth handling it definitely helps a lot. Its also great if you plan on adding anything i.e a follow focus and rail system, they left lots of room. So for a first rig I would highly recommend this to the beginner. And for the pro it would make a great backup.

Using 6 of these with our Canon XL100's. Provides just enough stability to get results like a true shoulder mounted camera. Light weight and easy to stow in our Kata cases. A worthwhile, inexpensive way to explore stabilization for event coverage and ENG applications.

Comments about ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer:

This rig is very well priced, way cheaper than the dual rod style ones. It provides prety good stabilization and the fit against your chest is comfortable, making it easy to use. The negatives: as usual with Ikan products NO DOCUMENTATION, which is highly annoying, making this hard to assemble. Also, the design could be a bit smaller, the mount is really a collection of 3 or 4 mounts all attached together, which results in the camera being a little too far away from your face idally. This makes adjusting focus harder than it needs to be.

I use this product with my DSLR and it works great. Makes camera held shots so much more smooth than just holding it alone. It's worth the little bit of money that it costs

Comments about ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer:

I'm actually pretty surprised by this rig. It's low price-point was concerning to me, but it really hasn't shown to be an issue thus far. The rig is made mainly of plastic, so it's lightweight, but does have some give to it with all the extensions attached. However, I found that while using it with a DSLR, full extension isn't really necessary.

I also like the fact that this is a resistive rig rather than weighted--which for long shoots is a HUGE plus.

Folds up for easy storage and came with a little storage bag too.

Comments about ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer:

It is very useful when you need to use the video mode without a tripod. Although it avoids movement, it is not totally stable because of the way it attaches to the chest and back, not that stable 100%... also it was slightly looking downward because the way I had to arrange it over my chest; I would've loved if it had some kind knob to tilt it.
Other than that it was ok.

Comments about ikan Recoil Camera Stabilizer:

It is functional, simple, and inexpensive. At first, it seems a bit cheap being all plastic. But it is rugged enough to survive normal use.

Breath control: The camera will rise and fall with your breathing as the lower arm rests on your chest. As long as you can breath in a shallow manner and control the movement, you'll be fine, but it takes a bit of practice. You can also do pans and tilts with practice.

Generally, I use this for shootng a talking head in an interview session. Good for my XA10 and my 5D MkII.
