Compared to other follow focus devices targeted at the DSLR market, the F3's most attractive quality is it's price. But friction? Could it really perform like a geared system? Yes, surprisingly well. It's solidly made and fits on any standard 15mm rod support system. Particularly nice (and well thought out) is the ability to flip the wheel unit around to accommodate 50mm and shorter lenses. You do have to make sure it's snug against the focus ring, or your motion will be very uneven. But once it's secure, the F3 rolls smooth and easy. We used it with a 7D and the fact that we could change lenses without removing the follow focus was a HUGE time saver. If you are on a budget and need a follow focus that works well, but won't slow you down, the F3 is a must have.

I bought this so that I wouldn't need to mount gears to all of my lenses. I will say this, once you actually get the wheel against your lens focus ring, it works great. There is a little play but it doesn't seem to be a huge deal. Getting it sitting against the lens was the problem for me. I have a set of standard 15mm rods. I also have a Manfrotto 577 quick release adaptor on the rails so that I can lose the rig fast and get the camera onto my tripod by itself. With the QR plate on the rods, the follow focus wouldn't come anywhere near touching my lens. Ok, I took the risers out of the camera plate that came with the rods, still wouldn't work. I had to use a small riser barrel from my rods and a different screw that came from my rig to get the gearbox high enough to make contact. This would not have been a problem if I was just able to slide the FF wheel under the lens more. The design prevents you from being able to do this, it's always way out to the side because the screw that tightens the gearbox is in the way. Also, the cheap, hardware store looking bolts that "allow" the FF to slide over are a joke. The square part of the carriage bolts are just a little too big at the top and do not allow sliding side to side as they should. You have to loosen them WAY up and almost lift the "sliding" plate out of its track to get it to move. The plate is already all marred up because of this. The problems with this product all lie in the rod mount portion of the design. The bad thing for me is that I was going just going make the DIY version of this FF that you can find on the internet with robot parts. I chose not to do this because I thought that the rod mount looked good on this and would probably justify the price difference. Wrong. The last complaint that I have is in the reversible feature of the FF gearbox. When you spin it to its other position, the focus direction on the wheel is reversed. This proves to be unhelpful when you want to get used to a way of pulling focus. It is helpful if some of your 3rd party lenses focus in the opposite direction, as at least one of mine do. That's it, can't say I love it. At all.

Comments about ikan F3 Friction Follow Focus:

I'm starting to wonder why I thought I needed this especially for the price.
I find the camera wants to twist and remove the friction on the focal ring and I wind up not using the follow focus. On top of that the bottom adjustment plate doesn't want to slid with the provided lag bolts. They fit too tight and almost have to be totally removed to adjust the follow focus in to provide enough friction to work. All in all I would say the device works but not sure I would buy another if it was lost.

At first, I wasn't really sure on how to rate or give a feedback on this product. I ordered this along with the Ikan stabilizer, but I wasn't able to use this with it. I didn't know I had to order additional parts for this to work. I must have missed the "asterisk." However, it should have been easily visible to minimize issues and our time.

I have returned both products because, it didn't work for me. It might for you tho.

Comments about ikan F3 Friction Follow Focus:

This product took me back to being in film school, not having any funds, and having to make due with the best equipment that there was available. It is both extremely helpful and leaves more to be desired. The simplistic design and it's compatibility is a plus. It's the Honda Civic of Follow Focus (foci?). However, if you've experienced other systems with more settings and precise functionality it will be hard to stick with this product very long.

If you don't mind using muscle memory focusing or well planned camera moves this product suffices, but on the move moves will frustrate the operator endlessly.

Comments about ikan F3 Friction Follow Focus:

I use the Friction Follow Focus with my GH-2. It works surprisingly well. Considering all of the extra elements needed to use a gear-based follow focus with the GH-2, it seems this is the quick solution. For run-and-gun shooting, this has given me a drastic improvement in my ability to adapt my focal depth to the dynamism of my moving subjects will in handheld mode. The only drawback to this unit is that there is play in the initiation of rotation. The give is not in the wheel-lens junction but somewhere in the gear box between the two wheels. At least a few millimeters of rotation is lost in there. Regardless, the shots look much better than if you try to focus with the ring on the lens where your arm movements make it nearly impossible to hold the camera steady or get the entirety of the focus pulled. With a handle like the Ikan Deluxe Fly in the right hand and the follow focus wheel in the left (and perhaps a third bracing point with the viewfinder), the shots stay steady at the onset, during, and after a focus has been pulled. Unless you need a whip or you have the luxury of setup time in your shoots, the Friction Follow Focus is the only way to go.

                              Pros:

                              1. Cheap
                              2. Relatively light
                              3. Works with short focal length lenses
                              4. Easy and intuitive to adjust and use

                              Cons:

                              1. The focus wheel has a slight give in either direction of rotation before it engages the gear

This is a great inexpensive follow focus setup. I use it with the Ikan EV2 dSLR baseplate, which I bought separately.

I initially purchased the more expensive and recently released EV2 follow focus setup (which includes the EV2 baseplate) but it had a couple of major drawbacks that made me return it. Briefly, it doesn't work with short focal length lenses and the gearbox makes audible clicks when turned.

The F3 Friction Follow Focus is cheaper, lighter, and works amazingly well! I use it with a pancake lens and it's perfect.

I would buy another one if I had another camera. :)

Being my first follow focus, I can't really compare it to other products.

The F3 does work pretty well though. I'm not sure how good it will be with tight focus rings, but so far it's tight and fluid against most of my lenses. The build feels good and makes focus a heck of a lot more intuitive (no more guessing which way to turn the ring).

I'm using this on 12'' indirailsPro with my t2i battery grip attached. The F3 is too low to reach the lens and I had to replace the riser block with something taller.

Worth the money, and B&H was cheaper than the ikan website. I just wish they came with additional riser plates and a hex tool to loosen the gear box and rail clamps.

Comments about ikan F3 Friction Follow Focus:

I can see how this gear case be useful if you are working with a very basic setup. If your lenses are heavier than the kit lens for a T3i, 7D and the like, you will probably run into some issues.

The situation is more serious if your camera sits on a couple plates: zacuto gorilla plate, quick release, etc.

I am giving it 3 stars because it didn't serve my purpose, but I believe if you carefully assess your intended setup, and you bring your gear to the store, you might find out that it works fine for your setup and style.

                                    Good luck!

I just got my F3 Follow Focus made by IKAN today and it was the answer to all my focus problems shooting HD Video with my 60D Canon. Works great with my T2i and My 7D as well. I highly recommend this item to anyone shooting HD video on a small budget. It is a life saver in any language. I will be buying another one very soon for my other HDSLR cameras.

It's worth the [$]. Good for SLRs that are occasionally used. I wouldn't want to spend a whole day with the thing. It's light weight and adds little bulk which is the big plus.

Comments about ikan F3 Friction Follow Focus:

I use the F3 with my Canon 7D and 17-40 and it works very well. I also use this with the Canon 50mm f1.4 and it works a little better. This seems to me like a far better choice then a geared follow focus for a person who isn't shooting series movies or only has a few lenses/zoom lens.

The F3 works the best with fixed focused lenses where the focusing ring is a little smoother but it really depends on the lens.

Only problems that I can find are that you really are limited with what lens/lenses you can use.

This is a great alternative to a gear follow focus if the majority of the lenses you own are newer and/or have a light pull. The build quality is pretty superb (heavy duty) and this does allow to get a nice tight rest against a lenses focus ring. A follow focus, even a friction one does increase your ability to focus on the fly quite a bit.

This thing is built very solid. I concerned about the build quality because it was so cheap in comparison. I have noticed that for a tighter lens the camera needs to be locked in super tight to the base plate, sometimes when making the friction tight enough to be useful it will make the camera swivel of center...

At all.
