The Hoya Pro 1D 16x (4-stop) Neutral Density Filter has several uses and offers the possibility to achieve otherwise unachievable results. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. They have no effect on color balance.

Neutral Density filters enable the shooter to adjust exposure without affecting color balance. ND filters appear gray and reduce the amount of light reaching the film. Neutral density filters are available in 1, 2, 3, or 4 stops to suit individual situations. Determining which neutral density filter yields ideal results for any given lighting situation takes knowledge, experience and a collection of such filters. Speaking generally, the 2-stop value (ND 0.6) effectively compensates average situations.

Hoya's digitally multi-coated glass greatly reduces the appearance of lens flare and ghosting caused by reflections. The filter frame is made from a black matte aluminum satin finish almite frame which reduces reflections. Almite is a coating used to help prevent corrosion. The black rimmed glass contained in the filter reduces the chance of light reflecting off the edge. As a real benefit, each filter has a knurled edge to facilitate easy attachment and removal. Hoya has even included a UV protected plastic storage case to extend the life of the filter. In addition, the Pro 1D filter is a low profile (thin) design making it a great choice for the wide angle shooting common in today's photo and video market.

Hoya is one of the largest manufacturers of glass in the filter industry. In collaboration with its parent company, Tokina Optical, Hoya continues to strive to produce some of the best glass on the market. Currently, they hold 40% of the world's market for optical glass.

The advantage of most Hoya filters is that Hoya puts, at least, one layer of anti-reflective coating on each side of their glass. It is not bare glass. Even if the glass is not multi-coated, this kind of production tends to minimize flare and ghosting.

Neutral Density Filters Have Four Main Uses

To enable slow shutter speeds to be used, especially with high speed films, to record movement in subjects such as waterfalls, clouds, or cars
To decrease depth of field by allowing wider apertures to be used, which helps separate subjects from their background
To decrease the effective ISO of high speed film (above ISO 400) and allow it to be used outdoors in bright situation
To allow cine and video cameras (which have fixed shutter speeds) to film subjects such as snow, sand or other bright scenes which could cause overexposure

Neutral Density Factors

ND.3 (exposure adjustment = 1 stop, reduces ISO to 1/2)
ND.6 (exposure adjustment = 2 stops, reduces ISO to 1/4)
ND.9 (exposure adjustment = 3 stops, reduces ISO to 1/8)
ND1.2 (exposure adjustment = 4 stops, reduces ISO to 1/16)

I use this NDF to be able to shoot close to maximum aperture so I can gain more fill flash in direct sun light. I also use it for video with my D800.

I got this filter to slow down my shutter for flowing water shots. It allows me long exposures without any noticeable color shift. I can also venture into the time-lapse field with this lens in bright sun. As usual, the service from B&H was excellent.

I'm using this on my 1992 Krasnogorsk K-3 16mm camera and it works fantastically. Instead of a fader, I just got the 4-stop so I wouldn't have to worry about changing the ND. Worked great and all my footage turned out fantastically.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Pro 1D 16x (4-stop) Neutral Density Filter:

the 77mm pro 1d 16x (4stop) ND filter was exactly the filter i was looking for. i'm a big user of off camera flash and shooting in the bright sunlight is a bad situation for my speedlights. this ND allows me to underexpose the sky just enough to add flash, producing dramatic, epic results.
color shift, what many people run into with inferior ND filters, is a common problem. the hoya was spot on. no worries.
i will not shoot in bright sunlight without it.
                            would i recommend? absolutely!

I use this filter for taking shots in full sun in order to get movement in water and sky (like most photographers). The quality of the glass is second to none, filter works as expected every time. Highly recommend this product to others and also recommend purchasing all your gear from B&H Photo.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Pro 1D 16x (4-stop) Neutral Density Filter:

I bought this for my Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 and have not been disappointed. It's a nice filter that is dark enough to shoot with a fairly slow shutter on a sunny day, but not too dark to keep on your lens for other "normal" outdoor shots.

I have the ND4, ND8 and now the ND16 - If you care about consistent color rendition, then you will need to evaluate white balance if you chnage out between the different values when using these ND filters (all for the same series of filters from Hoya - the Pro series). Each will shift the grey point (just a little) with the same lens and light setup - not so much you cant correct it in post processing, but the ND 8 is a little warmer than the ND4 & 16.

I used this with Profoto lights and D700 with various fast Nikon lenses with very good results doing several product shoots.

Comments about Hoya 77mm Pro 1D 16x (4-stop) Neutral Density Filter:

Buying a filter these days can be a hassle. There are so many filters, so many suppliers, and plenty of cheap filters that don't make the grade, so it's easy to waste your money.

I bought the Hoya Pro 1D 4-stop neutral density (ND16) filter because I trust the name and I know this product will do the job. I use it while shooting video on a DSLR and I've found that I can bank on it during the so-called golden hour to give me a good working aperture at 1/50sec and ISO160.

An advantage with a 4-stop rather than a 9-stop ND is that I can actually see the subject through the filter. A 9-stop ND is way too dark for that, even in bright light. I'd advise anyone buying an ND for video work to get the Hoya ND16 4-stop before going for anything more powerful. And if you do need something stronger in really bright light, you can always combine the ND16 with Hoya's terrific Pro 1 Digital polariser,

Another thing I like about the Hoya ND16 is the quality engineering and neutral colour. This filter is nicely made and easy to handle. The first Chinese ND I bought had a savage amber cast – more money wasted – but the Hoya Pro 1D is totally neutral. That means that the colors I photograph remain true.

Last but definitely not least, I like B&H's price on Hoya equipment, and their fast delivery turnaround. The guys at the shop told me the ND16 would get from New York to my back door in Australia in about six days. It arrived in five days, and that makes me a happy little Aussie.

This Pro 1D 16X( 4 Stop ) Model Neutral Density Filter is absolutely the best available for anyone taking photographs in Bright Sunlight or near the Reflective Glare found off of Water Surfaces. I cannot think of being out there taking landscape photographs without it.
