The Tiffen 58mm UV Protector Filter is a general use, clear filter that helps to absorb ultraviolet light and reduce the bluish cast of daylight. This filter is especially useful when photographing at high altitudes or around bodies of water. No additional coloration or contrast is provided, allowing you to pair this filter with others.
The UV filter is also useful as a general protective filter to leave on lenses at all times. Filters help to reduce dust and moisture from reaching your lens element and provide additional protection in case of drops or situations where scratching could occur.
Tiffen filters are made using ColorCore technology; a process that involves laminating the filter substrate between 2 pieces of optical glass, grinding flat to a tolerance of 1/10,000th of an inch, then mounting to precision metal rings.

I bought this filter to protect my lens and to reduce the glare off the ocean when shooting surf pictures. I found that when its on the lens in my housing it confuses the camera because of the extra piece of glass that the lens has to focus through. So I can't use it in the water but when ever I'm taking photos/video from the beach I use it to block the glare and protect the lens from sand. Its a good filter for the price. Prefect for protection.

I bought this to protect the lens. I take it off for most of the stuff I do, but leave it on when the lens is in my bag or when using it outdoors.
This is a cheap UV filter that performs the function, however the glass was so loose when got it I thought there was broken glass in the package. On inspection I found that the retaining ring was just loose, and rather than hassel with returns I just fixed it and moved on.
I'm not unhappy with it but not particularly impressed either - but hey - it's just a UV filter. If I could rate it at 2.5 stars I would.
Yes I would reccomend it to a friend with the above disclaimer. And I would buy one again for the same purpose.

I'm just using it because I got it for free. I would go for a polarized one usually. It provides a slight dust protection. That's about it.

I bought this for added protection for the Nikon 50mm F/1.8 I bought with it. I can't see any difference between photos with or without the UV protector on it, so I leave it on all the time like most others. I'd rather replace this than have to send the lens out for repair.

Does what it is supposed to do, sort of, yes it goes on the lens, yes it fixes images slightly, yes it protects your lens, but my camera wont focus with it on very well, if at all and it is very irritating
