I had been searching for my next lens, and figured it was time to invest in an 85mm. I have always been interested in the 85mm L, however, I have heard many complaints about the slow focusing, and vowed not to invest in that level of expense until they came out with a new version that adjusted that issue.

THEN I found the Simga 85mm f/1.4, much less expensive, and getting incredible reviews and comparisons to Canon's 85mm L. I have been suitably impressed. While it is prone to chromatic aberration wide open (which is typical for 50mm and 85mm lenses, even my 35mm L has some CA at times), it is easily adjusted in processing. It has focused fast for action shots, and with low-contrast. The compression of 85mm is lovely. It is one of my heaviest lenses, so I do have to take some care in upping my shutter speed to compensate, and giving my wrist a rest! But nicely built on brief inspection.

I can't recommend this lens enough. Given, I have owned it for a couple weeks now, so only time will tell for its hardiness (I have heard many horror stories of Sigma's customer service, but hoping that will be a non-issue!).

I am a very active professional photog and cinematographer. I have used many portrait lenses in the past and much of my work, both photographically and cinematically, is stylized around the intimate close-up. This lens interested me immediately with its 1.4 aperture which bests canon's 1.8 in speed and brightness and is a fraction of the L series lens (f/1.2) in price. I have had a rokinon previously, and used it largely for cinematic work and even on a 2x teleconverter. I loved the images produced, but the lens was MF and manual aperture... Fine for cinema, not for photo. And the filter size was 72mm (non-standard) and required a step up ring to be compatible with my other filters, rendering the hood useless. When I saw this sigma version, I was excited : 77mm filter mount, autofocus, auto aperture, 1.4 wide open and rugged... EXCELLENT! Ignoring the reviews of peers in hopes to get a good copy, I made the purchase. When I pay around $[$], I expect a worthy product. I am a Canon L series fan, but could not warrant the buy for their 85mm. I settled for this still-pricey buy. I will happy got back to the rokinon 85mm 1.4.This I set my focus to the center cross-type AF zone. The lens was repeatedly focusing inaccurately 1.5 inches ahead of the subject.. Sharp but inaccurate. At this shallow depth of field this renders images useless for photography. For cinema this does not matter as all your work is manual. Another major problem is the OVERWHELMING amount of chromatic aberration that should not appear in a lens of this cost. I have never seen a lens produce such a high amount of chromatic aberration. The rokinon at a fraction of the price produced little if any.In short I would recommend the rokinon. I was able to return the lens thanks to B&H's excellent service team and they supplied me with a store credit so that I could get the gear I needed for the shoot I was working ASAP. I hope this helps anyone considering this lens

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:

I use this either on a full frame camera (usually studio) or on an APS-C camera (usually weddings/events) for an equivalent focal length of approximately 135mm.
Typically stop it down between f2.2 and f5.6.
I like the focus speed, colour, sharpness and constrast.
      Great value for money.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:

I bought this lens almost 1 month ago to celebrate the people I have the privilege to work and play with. It's a joy to see their faces captured by such a high fidelity piece of hardware.

I shoot using a Canon 70D and portraits are in breathtaking focus; depth of field is fantastic. I mainly use this lens to capture dinner party portraits and most of my candid shots are taken in low light, ie: candle light. The wide open aperture of this lens makes low light photography crisp and clear.

I haven't run into any negative points since I started using this lens. It's as sharp and artful as advertised and expected.

I received my Sigma 85 f/1.4 the day before Christmas, unpacked it and starting shooting at our family get together. I am very please hot the 85 mm works with my full frame 5D II. The 1st 20 shots or so was before my flash broke, then I was forced to go totally without flash and the 1.4 gave me the speed I needed to capture the moment I wanted,This is the 1st non Canon lens I bought in 20+ years and I am glad I did. Yes I would recommend to a friend.

I'm going to have a lot of fun with this lens! I just got it today and after snapping a few shots I'm finding it a pleasure to use. It focuses fast, is very sharp wide open and feels well built. I hemmed and hawed about whether to get the Canon 85mm 1.2 or this Sigma and at this point in my career (I'm a fledgling photographer) I couldn't throw down the extra cash for the Canon. And who knows, maybe I won't ever purchase it if this Sigma continues to impress!

I love this news lens. It is a much better value than the Canon f/1.2 and it's a fraction of the price. The build is really solid and the focus is accurate, at least for my copy. I have read that the focus on some lenses is not good. It comes with a nice lens hood and extender for APS-C cameras. The bokeh is nice and soft and the pop of this lens is really nice.

This baby is sharp as a tac. I didn't know what I was missing. I tried it both on my 7D and my old Rebel, and it just makes even my little old Rebel sing with joy! Beautiful Bokeh, sharpness, etc. I use it to shoot portraits both animal and people, but I have also tried it in landscaping pictures. It just produces beautiful shots.

I was deciding between this and the 1.2 version of Canon. Glad I did it. Very sharp, warm, faster in the AF and a very good price. Very good construction, feels solid like a tank, much safer to work with specially at the time of switching lenses, better performance at low light which for me is a MUST, a bit lighter than the Canon's 1.2. Comparing the bokeh in 1.2 and this 1.4 beast, you can even tell the difference. This is a very good choice at a very good price.

Bought this for portraits and it's exceeded my expectations. Focus is great in available light but does struggle in low light situations where timing could be an issue. I mainly use this as a studio lens so AF speed isn't a major concern. It's sharp in the center at 1.4 and tack sharp by 2.8 in the center. For studio portraits I have no regrets buying this over the Canon.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:

I spent an extra #$ and got the L glass version of this. I just wasn't impressed and I wasn't impress with the images people have submitted with their reviews, but I took a chance. Most of everyone's image has a very noisy bokeh, as well as my own with this lens. Not good. Though if you're on a budget, this lens is good. Not great, but good enough.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:

I am using this lens mainly for portraits while shooting weddings.

80% of the time I set it at F 1.4 & sure the focus is very critical at such a wide opening, however in return the results are gorgeous pictures.

It is not a fast lens, and you certainly need to slow down while working with it especially at F 1.4

The combination of of usning my Nikon D800E body and this lens is incredible. I added some samples from a recent event I worked on, have fun !

This lens is so spectacular!! I actually returned this one because I failed to educate myself on the focus length I needed. I got a 35mm instead. I took some shots with this one and it is PERFECT for situations where you can't get up close to your subjects. This is not what I personally needed, but if you need a telephoto, you will not be disappointed! The photos I did take with it made me squeal with delight! Just beautiful!

I bought this lens for my Canon bodies because I couldn't bring myself to spending $[$] on the Canon 1.2!! This lens didn't let me down. It is sharp as hell and saved me a ton of money. If you are questioning buying it rather than the Canon 1.2, don't even think about it. Just buy it, you'll LOVE it.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:

Remarkable piece of glass. First of all I have a Canon EOS 6D and I recently started with portrait photography, so it's seems like the 85mm is just one of the best focal lenses for portraits in full frame cameras. I considered the usual suspects the Canon EF 85mm f/1.8 and f/1.2 the latter being the absolute best but filthy wicked pricey; after reading a ton of reviews on the subject I found a third alternative and that's the Sigma. It has after all, the best optical quality for all Canon full frame cameras, according to Dxo Mark Lens Reviews; it has mostly outstanding reviews in every relevant photography site, and it's certainly quite affordable much more than the f/1.2.Well, indeed it's a keeper. The autofocus is fast and accurate (I did not experiment any back focusing problems), super sharp, shallower depth of field than the Canon's f/1.8 and it feels way better. Along the lens it's also included a lens hood and a pouch. Is it better than the Canon's f/1.2? Overall I don't think so. But it offers like 97% of the functionality for less than 50% of the price so at least for me there no need in the immediate future to consider replacing it.

I was just looking for a portrait lens with good bokeh and sharp picture with my 5D Mark III. This lens gives amazing pictures in all light conditions for portrait and product photography. The price is reasonable and I would definitely recommend for all enthusiastic and pro photographers.

I've only used it for flower photos so far; but plan to move on to portraits. The DOF and image clarity are outstanding and the only negative would be the weight; but I think because of the quality of this lens it's to be expected.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Canon EOS Digital SLR Cameras:

I use this lens for portraits and events. I first rented this lens for a job, with the intention of renting the Canon 1.2L lens. After one event, I ordered one for my own kit. I take a lot of event and kid portraits, so focus speed is a factor. Balancing bokeh, focus ability, image quality and price, I could not justify even renting the Canon L lens. Image quality is outstanding. The lens hunts a bit in low light but nothing more than I'd expect. I expect this lens will challenge the Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens in producing the images which sell the most.
