When you need a medium-telephoto standard lens for everything from portraiture to sports, the fast Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens for Nikon Digital SLRs is a great solution. This large aperture beauty is designed with an SLD (Special Low Dispersion) glass element and a glass mold element which yield first-class, sharp image captures with high contrast.
The 85mm f/1.4 has Sigma's HSM (Hyper Sonic Motor) which provides fast, accurate and quiet autofocusing. The exterior of this lens is EX-finished which translates to a superior build and optical quality, enhanced handling and appearance. It comes with a petal-type hood to block out extraneous light. A dedicated hood adapter for cameras with an APS-C size image sensor is also included to expand the length of the hood for blocking out extraneous light more effectively.
This fast f/1.4 lens is great for capturing fast moving images, allowing you to use faster shutter speeds, and is what you want when shooting under low lighting conditions. This highly efficient lens has a nine blade circular diaphragm for creating pleasant out-of-focus highlights (bokeh) which is a major asset to portrait and wedding photographers.
Note: This lens is designed for use with full frame digital cameras. May also be used with smaller APS-c size sensors with a corresponding effective increase in focal length to about 127.5mm with most cameras.
Note: Nikon mount lenses do not have an aperture ring.
Note! If the camera body does not support HSM, autofocus will not be available.

This is my second favorite lens for portrait after Nikon 70-200. Super sharp and works very well in low light situations. I played with Nikon version before I buy Sigma and both lenses will give a very close results that you can not differentiate between them.
Save some money and go with Sigma.

Since the Nikon 85mm lens is out of my price range, I did my research and found be Sigma 85mm f/1.4 and fell in love with it. I mainly use this lens to shoot weddings and portraits and ive gotten a lot of positive results with this lens.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:
I use this lens for portrait and product shots. I ran the lens through my lens testing kit which tests for sharpness and resolution. I used it on a high school band concert with an ISO of 1000 and an f stop of 1.4 and every shot is clear and sharp. Since then I have used it for portrait and general product shots to beautiful results. This is, quite frankly, a great lens and is a lot less expensive than the same mm lens of Nikon. Great buy. Some say it is heavy but I don' find it any heavier than my Nikon 105 macro or my 86 mm Nikon tilt and swing. I can find nothing negative to say about this lens.

Portraits.... wow. My images are on a diffrent level. I was using the 24-70mm & 70-200mm f/2.8s to shoot people. Somtimes the 14-24mm F/2.8 for funny stuff.
This lens is outstanding.
at 1.4 it is amazing, however not without color fringing but no low F stop is on any lens.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:
I had my doubts about this lens, I read several reviews on the internet, and I decided to buy this lens hoping to fulfill my expectations.
to my surprise, this lens has proved better than expected on my nikon d600, is quite sharp and the focus is very good, as any 77mm lens is heavy, but every time I take photos I have found that is stable and reliable, its construction despite being more plastic than metal does a great job comparing to the nikkor 85mm lens which is more expensive, definitely one of my best purchases I've made.
Best combination quality-reliability-price for a lens of this type.

Just got this lens and used once to take picture from my son's soccer games. The focus length may not be suitable for this kind of shooting, but the results are greate when the subject at right distance. Very sharp image. Focus very quick. Will try some portrait later.

I purchased this lens for mainly shooting portraits. My first test was shooting in a low light situation at the widest aperture… the results was outstanding. I purposely took some shots with distracting backgrounds at f1.4, the bokah was excellent.
This lens is very solid in construction… and very fast focus speed. I would certainly recommend to a friend.

Comments about Sigma 85mm f/1.4 EX DG HSM Lens For Nikon Digital SLR Cameras:
Use specifically to shoot daughters basketball games - generally held in high school and church gyms (3rd grade). I use it in combo with 50mm and 30mm - but the 85mm offers great close-ups mid court - even at far court. Focusing is quick but prob best used in manual mode in those moments where there are bodies pushing near the ball. Not good for video - the mechanical noise will come over the audio. Great bokeh at 1.4 - 1.8 - and really great shots @ 30 - 40 feet out with good DOF @ f/1.4 - 1.8. Feels very durable and some great results so far.

After waiting and waiting for Nikkor 85 1.4G and reading such favorable reviews, I just went ahead with the Sigma. You know when you take a picture and it just jumps at you that you know it has the right stuff. A bit heavy but hey, it's a 1.4 and there is a lot of glass and metal in there. Glad I got it and saved enough to put toward the D800 when it comes out.

I bought this as a replacement for my Nikkor 85mm f/1.4D lens. I was looking for faster AF performance. I got it. I might have sprung for the Nikkor f/1.4G but it wasn't available due to the tsunami. I'm quite pleased with everything about the Sigma. I've not used it for portraits yet, because I usually shoot them around f/4 anyway, but if I want a real shallow DOF, I know the Sigma will shine.

I rented the new Nikon 85 and loved it to death. However, with the hefty price tag, it was totally out of my budget. I heard that the Sigma was just as great, so I went ahead and bought it. I love this focal length. The color and contrast is great. My only complaint is that it is a bit tricky to focus, maybe a bit slow. Aside from that, I love it. :)

- as good as the Nikon 85mm f/1.4 AF-S

- outstanding build quality
- fast, accurate autofocus on my D7000
Sigma has really stepped up the game. This is a serious lens. I have used both the Nikon versions of this lens and I just don't understand the value proposition there. Optically and mechanically, the older AF-D Nikon is nowhere near the Sigma. The newer AF-S Nikon is about the same but costs twice as much! The Sigma is a no-brainer.
