Frankly i was expecting slightly better performance from this disk, but in firewire connection it seem only marginally faster then a regular 7200rpm firewire800 drive (the G-Drive 2TB for instance which is one of my product of choice) in both Raid 0 and 5 on my Mac Pro or my iMac. That being said, the fact that it is Raid 5 is in itself great, it really does ease the mind when you are a pro editor/filmaker and data loss is one of the worst things to happen in production and post-production. for this alone and its relatively low price point (in comparison to others) it is a good product. I purchased this for a client who really doesn't need more for now, but for myself I would probably rather go for the G-Speed eS. Oh also, it's not really that quiet, I wouldn't say it's distractingly loud, but it's there and you hear it.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-SPEED Q External Hard Drive Array:

This is too early to give a real review, but so far (1 week)...Works right out of the box. Used it to download media on location for a shoot. No set up required. Plug and play. But then I did run into a problem when I was copying files to a portable drive and left it do so (said approx 1 hour). When I returned, computer had gone to sleep. New imac. I hadn't changed any settings. Apparently this damaged the drive. Got an error msg stating Mas OS cant repair the disk. I didn't lose any files, but I couldn't write to the drive. I had to do another complete back up (took a few hrs) and reformat the Q and transfer the files back onto it. Working fine since. Its only been a few days and I am very careful about the cables and I changed my imac to never go to sleep. The Gtech support said that this was caused by the computer going to sleep while the drive was working. I did have the same problem once while initially backing up the drive before reformating it and I had changed the computer to NOT sleep. But, when I backed it up AGAIN, it worked fine. Made me nervous.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-SPEED Q External Hard Drive Array:

I needed a fast array for my editing, effects and animation work. This array fit the bill! I work mostly with ProRes422 footage but the array is fast enough to work with one stream of uncompressed HD as well. The RAID is set for 5 (out of the box - it can be changed to 0 if you wanted) so I have the extra protection and I am using a SATA connection to my Mac Pro. Noise doesn't seem to be a big problem as the fans on my mac pro are just as loud as the fan on this drive, but I have both units under my desk to minimize the noise.
Overall, it was a great purchase and I love the fact that it uses enterprise class hard drives.

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-SPEED Q External Hard Drive Array:

I needed a away to safely store all my compositing elements and have quick access on all of my working platforms Mac Pc Linux and the G-Speed Q has really stepped up. With its raid5 system all my years of collecting elements are safe and delivered fast. Hot swappable drives mean even when a drive does go south and can just slide in a replacement drive take the client to lunch and come back to all my data. the drive is very quite even setting on the desk-top.You just can not go wrong with this array, if fact Im going to get another one.Flame - AfterEffect-3dsMax-Photoshop, what ever I use - it's go time with G-speed!

Comments about G-Technology 4TB G-SPEED Q External Hard Drive Array:

This is my second one I have purchased because I needed more space. I use one for backups, and the 2nd one for my media server storage. If 4TB doesn't seem big enough, you can easily upgrade the drives inside to 4TB or 3TB models (giving 12TB or 16TB total storage in RAID 0). Never had any issues hardware or software wise. Easy to configure with the included utility. Very well built, solid aluminum construction with a solid plastic front. Transfer speeds are plenty fast enough for my purposes over FireWire 800. If they come out with a Thunderbolt option any time soon I would get that. Cooling fan is quiet for what it does, never had any issues with overheating. It is expensive but reasonable for what you gain from using this, and BHPHOTOVIDEO.com offers a very reasonable price compared to suggested retail.

G-Tech makes great products and this is no exception. However, unlike their G-Speed ES, you can't change the RAID setting for this model on a Windows 7 machine. You have to plug it into a Windows XP machine

I use this for editing HD video in various flavors through FW800 on both Final Cut 7 and Premier CS6. It is fast, capable and I have piece of mind with it in RAID 5 mode. Really am happy with this purchase. Its also smaller than I expected which is good. It also works fast with Lightroom.

When looking for a hard drive for my TV project, the G-Speed Array was recommended by the post production company, and it has worked great so far. We selected it based on price, RAID capabilities for backing up, and speed.

This is great for my video editing needs. The RAID 5 gives me peace of mind and enough speed to get the job done. I am using Avid Media Composer but rarely get above one or two streams of video and it works fine for me. I used it Firewire800 and eSATA, and they both worked great. I was a little worried because I am still running Windows Vista (yes, there are still people actually working in Vista). But I plugged it in, formatted the drive and I am up and running. Great solid build on this device!

Excellent hard drive. Bought for the RAID 5, really like the performance for video editing. This drives are slow to write but fast on reads. Great if your in a small production environment.

We actually share this drive out from our main editing iMac with 3 others computers using SMB. Everyone connects with speed and can share files easily.

It's beautiful, Sleek, compact, and FAST! I use this in RAID 0 Stripe array. THe speed is incredible all I need and more for serious video editing. I use Avid MC 5.5, Final Cut Studio, After Effects, blah, blah.... This drive also looks great sitting next to my Mac Pro like they were made for each other. It doesn't disturb the aesthetics! During periods of silence when working late at night, the fan can be a little noisy and its ALWAYS RUNNING. Just remember to turn the drive off using the power switch on the back after you shutdown your Mac or PC. Definitely glad I made the plunge!

Set up was a breeze! It came pre set to Raid 5. I downloaded the software from the website, then ran the RAID configuration and within minutes I was using RAID 0. I'm using the eSata connection but the Raid configuration requires the USB connection, no sweat!

Plugged it in on my IMac through Fire Wire 800 and its ready to go in RAID 5 mode! Delivers good perfomance for video editing with the security of a RAID 5 array! Love it.

Bulky but very nice build and very easy to set up. You plug it and turn it on and you are done, BUT ... I found it extremely noisy. The main fan always turn at full speed. Only a hairdryer is slightly louder ... I use the unit for 6 month now and I'm fed up with the noise. [...] So I'm currently hesitating between replacing the fan myself by a quieter one but loosing warranty or replacing the whole unit by a different brand/model

So far so good. I have owned a 5 bay drobo before, completely terrible. Lost hours and hours of wedding video files. I bought this unit to replace it.

This 4TB G-Speed is fantastic. I had to buy it with the 4x pcie esata card. (Which I would suggest for compatibilities sake.)
No complaints. I back up my projects every night. And so far I can sleep soundly.

Easy to setup. Doesn't take up too much desk space. Quiet. It just works.

I use it for color grading and on-set stuff. Quad interface. 4 enterprise class 1 TB hard drives, seriously the cost of the drives almost makes the enclosure and controller free. Lightweight. No set-up. GTech quality.

Downsides: no set-up because it only does RAID 5 and 0. Good enough for my uses. It's a little noisy with the fan. Not insanely but a little.

A lot of value for the money.

I bought this for RAID 5 storage of my video projects. I'm using it with my 2010 iMac i7 connected with Firewire 800. In this configuration it works very well with 1080P Apple ProRes 422 in Final Cut Studio. It's relatively quiet (not silent!) and remains cool after a full day of editing.

I have been using the G-Speed Q 4TB unit for about a month now and it works great, it is really fast with transfer speeds using e-sata of arround 220mbps according to the aja test.

My only issue is that it is not really silent, the fan is always on and you can hear it all the time, currently I have it about 4 feet from my mac pro in a shelve and you can hear the fan on.
