Whether you are shooting indoor or outdoor sports, portraits, nature, or landscapes, the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens is the telephoto zoom that's a great way to capture the images before you. This is the Tamron Anniversary lens and is the first Tamron optic that incorporates an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) for fast, quiet and precision autofocusing.

This Vibration Compensation (VC) lens will allow you shoot up to four stops slower than would be possible with a non-VC lens, so you can shoot hand-held at all focal lengths without blurring whether shooting fast moving sports from football and car racing as well as events under low lighting conditions.

The SP 70-300mm is constructed with one LD (Low Dispersion) and one XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens which prevent chromatic aberration, resulting in clear, high contrast and color-accurate digital image captures.

This lens is also digitally integrated (Di) which means that it has been optimized for digital imaging, providing outstanding performance for DSLRS with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as with 35mm film cameras.

In the pursuit to achieve the most outstanding image resolution in the 70-300mm class, Tamron's Anniversary lens utilizes an advanced optical design that features an LD (Low Dispersion) and an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized materials that prevent chromatic aberration.
The SP AF70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD boasts sharper contrast and greater descriptive performance.
This is the first Tamron lens sporting a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive); Tamron's very own ultrasonic auto-focus drive mechanism. This USD mechanism delivers fast focusing, making it a perfect telephoto zoom choice for photographing sports, racing, or other fast-moving subjects.
The lens also boasts Tamron's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization that allows you to shoot at up to 4 stops slower than non-VC lenses. This assists in hand-held photography, not only at long focal length ranges where blurring is common, but also under low-lit conditions, dramatically enhancing photographic freedom.
Di (Digitally Integrated) design is a Tamron designation that applies to lenses that have been optimized for digital capture using advanced multi-coating techniques and optical designs that assure excellent image quality across the entire picture field. Because of these characteristics, Di lenses provide outstanding performance on cameras with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as on 35mm film.

I've been around cameras since I was 11 starting out with a Kodak Duoflex II. And have accumulated quite an array of cameras and photographic equipment.

A fan of Nikon since the Nikon FM (for younger readers not a radio station but a manual film SLR). My Nikon SLRs and most of my lenses sit quietly inside of camera bags & backpacks using nothing but digital these days. All Nikon.

Not sure what got me to buy the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Telephoto Zoom but I am glad I did. For testing purposes, I mounted it on a DX body (the D90), my favorite run-about camera (light, sturdy and capable of holding its own) and a week later I haven't taken it off yet.

First the ugly: it does NOT seem as sturdy as some Nikon zooms but some of the Nikon lens are built like tanks (if tanks were made of glass inside).
So I do worry about banging the lens around. Enough so that I ordered a camera/lens holster bag (I usually walk around with the naked camera & lens unless I'm on a shoot and then I carry a bag with accessories).

As others noted, it does "jump" sometimes, a combination of the autofocus and the VC system (VC is the Tamron anti-vibration equivalent of Nikon's VR & VRII). But don't let it bug you, because it focuses as fast or faster than any other lens I've used. Press the release half way and the lens snaps to attention sharply focused.

Now for the good: I just love the bokeh. It shows up unexpectedly on shots where I wouldn't expect any because of the aperture. Somehow it often surprises you with good subject to background isolation that while I don't quite get why, I do love it.

The so called Tamron Anniversary lens it is the first Tamron optic that incorporates an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) for fast, quiet and precision autofocusing.

Second the VC (think VR / VRII ) while not as "civilized" it sure works fine. I've taken handheld low-light shots with this lens at 1/10 that are pretty sharp. They advertise it you can go 4 stops lower. It is sharper than humanly possible at such a slow shutter speed (handheld).

On top of that I was pleasantly surprised to find there is a $100 rebate from Tamron this month (Sep 2012) - makes this lens a bargain.

I took one star off because it doesn't seem as sturdy as other lenses. But to be fair I should've put it back because of the great price. I didn't.

All around I haven't stopped taking photos yet with this. I keep thinking of situations where it may fail and it ends up pleasantly surprising me.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words. Check out the 2 photos below.
I chose them to try to illustrate the strengths of the lens. If you want to see more shots taken using the Tamron, visit the website, click on "Galleries" / then "Animals" then "Summer Horses".

I'm having a lot of fun with this 300mm.

    Quite a gem.

The inexpensive telephoto zoom market is filled with several fatally-flawed competitors. On an APS-C (crop) camera, the Canon 55-250mm EF-S is revered for its strong optical performance for the price, but sports a cheap plastic lens mount. The more expensive Canon 70-300mm performs poorly at 300mm and still features cheap micro-motor USM, which is neither silent, durable, nor capable of manual override. Enter the Tamron 70-300 SP, which for a very reasonable price promises excellent performance - at least on paper.

This China-made lens sports true ring-type USM for fast, silent autofocus, VC for image stabilization, a metal mount, solid-feeling build quality, and an included lens hood. It seems to be a winner, but alas the lens' real world performance doesn't quite live up to its potential. Like most budget tele-zooms, the Tamron is sharp from 70-200mm and softens noticeably by 300mm. However, I would not hesitate to use the lens past 200mm as image quality and sharpness remain adequate, especially at f/8. Bokeh (blur) quality is mediocre, a bit harsh for my taste. Autofocus is fast and quiet but a bit unreliable. Unfortunately, VC on my lens is horrendous. I consistently obtain sharper results with VC off than with it enabled. VC "activation" is loud and causes the image in the viewfinder to jerk noticeably. In a quiet setting such as a church, the sound of VC activating would likely be as annoying as the AF whine of old DC-motor lenses. Finally, while VC does seem to stabilize the viewfinder picture, it does nothing or worse to the actual image. I have consistently noticed a softening effect in images taken with VC on, as well as reduced focus accuracy (on static subjects!) Therefore I just turn VC off and may send the lens in to Tamron for repair.

One final comment: Don't count on getting your rebate check anytime soon. I bought my lens last year and am still waiting for my check. After two months of waiting, Tamron informed me that I had not included the "box-top" cutout, invalidating my rebate. I did include the cutout serial number and had to jump through a bunch of "customer service" hoops to prove it. Still haven't received my check. I highly recommend taping the box cutout to the rebate form and documenting everything rebate-related.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLRs & 35mm Film Cameras:

Wanted to replace my Canon 70-300 EF 4-5.6 III because it didn't have image stabilization and I'm planning on trying my hand at some sports when football season comes around. The best part about this lens is probably the VC (image stabilization). You can see the image lock into place in the frame, so that you can take the picture. The lens is also pretty sharp, granted I've been experimenting with faster shutter speeds lately. Does a good job outdoors on a well lit day. Probably a half an inch larger in diameter than my other tele-zoom and weighs more as well. It feels good though, zooms smoothly and focuses silently. The only reason I would get anything else in this focal range is if I wanted a long prime of something with a larger aperture. Otherwise I'm set with this lens from 70-300mm.

AF is quick and quiet. The lens has great optically quality and is sharp all the way to 200mm and a bit softer up to 300mm, but still usable. VC works great at stabilizing stationary subjects. Comes with lens hood. Metal lens mount.

VC jerks when trying to follow moving subjects. Build quality is on par with other lenses in these price range.

I bought this lens to replace an older Canon lens with the same focal lengths. I decided to purchase this lens because it is a great value. I really like this lens. It is a quality product and works well with me Canon t3i. It is not the fastest focusing, but it is sharp and crisp. I am very satisfied and would buy it again! I have been taking photos for close to 30 years and use this lens for action and nature photos.

I read many different reviews before purchasing this lens. Many reviews stated that for full frame cameras (I use a Canon 5D MK III), this lens was 1)sharper on the edges and corners than the older Canon version, 2) the front element did not rotate making it better for CP filter use, and, 3) the VC was better by a couple of stops. I can definitely say that all the above are true. I could not be happier with this lens, and would truly recommend it to anyone with a full frame camera.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Canon Digital SLRs & 35mm Film Cameras:

I wanted something a little longer and to use with filters. The Canon 70-300L was out of my price range for my needs. Overall it is pretty darn sharp but slow to focus. As a Canon shooter, the zoom ring is a little awkward to use. This is my only Tamron lens. I really like that the front element does not spin. This is why I did not go for the cheaper Sigma option. Also, the Canon non-L 70-300 has a spinning front element on focus. This lens is mainly for outdoor use. I did get some usable images indoors, but I don't think I would use it for action sports (stopped players worked the best). Use this lens on a Canon 5D Mark III.

I had an EF 100-400L for the last 6 years until an unfortunate accident rendered it nothing more than a scarred paperweight. At $, I'd obviously saved up for a long while before being able to afford it in the first place. When I broke my toy, I had to have something cheap, but solid until I can again afford the real deal. The SP 70-300 is not anywhere near the L, but it has proven to be a worthy replacement while I save up to buy another Canon. I shoot trains primarily and some wildlife as well; and in any type of weather. I have had the lens for just about 2 weeks and have taken it out in sun, snow, fog, and in diminishing light conditions already. It hasn't always produced satisfactory results, but every experienced photog knows it takes time to learn the idiosyncrasies of your gear. That said, it has produced some incredible images so far--and in a package that is merely 1/5 of the cost of the Canon. Unless you're planning on selling your images [and probably even if you are], this is a solid alternative to the L glass. Once you figure out the strengths and weaknesses of the tool, you can learn how to use it to minimize the bad results.*5-Star rating is for the quality of the product as compared to the price I paid. These should be renamed "value" ratings systems because obviously a $ lens won't be a 5 when compared one worth $.**I have attached a couple of pictures to demonstrate it's capabilities of locking-on to a moving target at full extent in challenging lighting conditions as well as a test shot of the effectiveness of the VC.

I researched online for a while for a telephoto in this range. I'm pretty new to dslr photography so wanted something on a budget. This lens seemed to be well received, at least comparable to the Canon by most reviewers, for a much more attractive price.

Very happy with this lens overall. So fun to use! I don't think you can beat this quality at the price!

I had previously been saving for the Canon 70-200L USM f/4 and a 1.4 teleconverter, but then I saw the specs and rebate offer on this Tamron and decided it was too good to pass up. Build quality is obviously not L level, but it is extremely solid, the best Tamron offers. Image quality is very good at f/4, and excellent at f/5.6-8. Even at 300mm, the lens is very sharp, not much falloff at all. The big surprise for me was the VC. I used to use a Canon 55-250is ii, and found the stabilizer very useul at the longer focal lengths, but had written off getting the IS version on the 70-200 because of the price. I have to say, the VC on this Tamron is better than the Canon IS if used correctly. You just need to give the lens a split second to engage the VC before releasing the shutter, but I was definitely getting at least an extra 3 stops with it in good light. So, great image and build qualty, 70-300mm, excellent VC system, 6 year warranty, all for [$] after rebate? I think it's one the best finds out there and I'm very pleased so far.

The contrast is excellent and the sharpness is equal to any Canon EF series lens and I dare say as good as a L series in most focal ranges. I am well pleased with the performance and quality.

Very sharp images. Image Stabilization works very well.
