Whether you are shooting indoor or outdoor sports, portraits, nature, or landscapes, the Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Lens is the telephoto zoom that's a great way to capture the images before you. This is the Tamron Anniversary lens and is the first Tamron optic that incorporates an Ultrasonic Silent Drive (USD) for fast, quiet and precision autofocusing.

This Vibration Compensation (VC) lens will allow you shoot up to four stops slower than would be possible with a non-VC lens, so you can shoot hand-held at all focal lengths without blurring whether shooting fast moving sports from football and car racing as well as events under low lighting conditions.

The SP 70-300mm is constructed with one LD (Low Dispersion) and one XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens which prevent chromatic aberration, resulting in clear, high contrast and color-accurate digital image captures.

This lens is also digitally integrated (Di) which means that it has been optimized for digital imaging, providing outstanding performance for DSLRS with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as with 35mm film cameras.

In the pursuit to achieve the most outstanding image resolution in the 70-300mm class, Tamron's Anniversary lens utilizes an advanced optical design that features an LD (Low Dispersion) and an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized materials that prevent chromatic aberration.
The SP AF70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD boasts sharper contrast and greater descriptive performance.
This is the first Tamron lens sporting a USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive); Tamron's very own ultrasonic auto-focus drive mechanism. This USD mechanism delivers fast focusing, making it a perfect telephoto zoom choice for photographing sports, racing, or other fast-moving subjects.
The lens also boasts Tamron's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization that allows you to shoot at up to 4 stops slower than non-VC lenses. This assists in hand-held photography, not only at long focal length ranges where blurring is common, but also under low-lit conditions, dramatically enhancing photographic freedom.
Di (Digitally Integrated) design is a Tamron designation that applies to lenses that have been optimized for digital capture using advanced multi-coating techniques and optical designs that assure excellent image quality across the entire picture field. Because of these characteristics, Di lenses provide outstanding performance on cameras with full-frame and APS-C format sensors as well as on 35mm film.

This is my first Tamron lens. I purchased it to replace a Nikkor 55-200mm cheapie lens I got in 2005.

I have been impressed since it arrived. The build quality is good, the lens is easy to handle and operate, the auto-focus works smoothly in most situations, and the Vibration Compensation is simply fantastic! I have been able to get reasonably sharp images at 300mm down to 1/30th of a second, HAND-HELD! -- however, I need a disclaimer here; it is always best to use a longer focal length lens with a tripod.

A word about the VC; it makes noise when it locks on; kind of a muted whirring sound for lack of a better term. It does not bother me and it's not a negative against the lens. However, those unaware of it might think it's a defect, but it's not.

This lens will not compete with the higher end Nikkor or Canon lenses (which are much higher in price), but it's not supposed to. It's made to deliver very good images for a very reasonable price. With that in mind, Tamron hit this one out of the park. Plus, it totally out-performs the cheapie Nikkor 55-200mm. Actually, the Tamron just destroys it.

At the time of this review, Tamron is offering a rebate on this. That makes this lens a total steal.

If you search youtube, you can watch a review of this lens from "That Nikon Guy"...he compares it to a higher price (F/2.8) Tamron. It's worth viewing.

Providing the web site here allows it, I'll post 2 images taken with this lens, and a Nikon D5000 (both images were re-sized to 1024 x 768). Both shots were taken hand-held.

If you are a photo enthusiast as I am, and you want to begin taking images in longer focal lengths, put this Tamron lens in your bag!

    Did't work for me!

I returned mine since AF and/or VC was noisy for me. It may be acceptable for others.

Few photos that I took using D300S were mostly sharp except some softning at 300mm.

I was looking for something that would extend to 300mm but that would be easier to carry and hand-hold than my Sigma 120-400mm f/4.5-5.6. I tried the Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6, but I was disappointed by the resulting IQ. Thanks to B&H's excellent return policy, I was able to return it and order the Tamron 50-300 f/4.6-5.6. I couldn't be happier. It was just was I was looking for.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLRs & 35mm Film Cameras:

Prior to buying this lens I've owned several different 70-300mm models. I have the Tamron for Sony (non VC) and the very (very, very) old 70-300mm DI, LD version. But this one, with the VC is something special. With the non-VC models, I was always stopping down to f/8 or f/11 for acceptable sharpness and to remove chromatic aberration which was positively hideous on the older versions. However, this new version is better sharpness than the old ones even at f/5.6 (at 300mm) and no CA to speak of, even in very high-contrast areas.I am currently using this on a Nikon D7100 and it's an absolute joy to shoot with. The VC is nothing short of amazing. At 300mm, it gives you a rock-solid view of whatever you're shooting at and the autofocus is truly wonderful, very quick and accurate (also extremely quiet). I handed the camera to my father and asked him to focus on something at 300mm with the VC turned off, he said "I can't, the camera is shaking around too much", I flipped the VC switch and the only word he could muster was "wow". It's really THAT good too. There is a bit of a "clunk" when the VC catches, which takes some getting used to, if you've never shot with a VC lens, but I have gotten tack sharp images down to 1/15th of a second at 300mm and I think that is EXTRAORDINARY. It's a world of difference from the non-VC versions, where it was difficult (if not impossible) to get a sharp image below 1/100th of a second at 300mm, I was often "forced" to shoot at 1/250th or 1/320th if I wanted sharp pictures. So I've easily gained 4-5 stops with the addition of the VC. That, alone is worth the additional cost.I am accustomed to shooting with true macro lenses, primarily the Tokina 100mm f/2.8 (which I also reviewed here on B&H and it's the "most liked positive review", currently). I can't say the Tamron is quite as sharp as the Tokina, but then the Tokina is a prime lens and is one of the sharpest lenses that you can buy in the sub-$ range (perhaps THE sharpest). However, the Tamron is absolutely acceptable when it comes to sharpness, even wide open. I use it for bird/nature photography, so I am often cropping pretty heavily because birds don't seem to want to get very close to me (I think it has something to do with the massive dog that's always following me around). Even at 1:1, the lens is still beautiful. I use about 45-50 sharpening in Lightroom and the image just about always turns out beautiful. The images are acceptably contrasty, without overdoing it and even in high-contrast scenes, it retains its color. This lens has actually improved my skill as a photographer, which is quite a task for a lens to accomplish. Before, with the non-VC lenses, I would miss shots because of hand shake if I was shooting hand-held at longer focal lengths, but that's a problem of the past. I can see this lens remaining on my camera for quite a while, it's just THAT good.So if you are looking at this version and the non-VC version and your wallet starts to get a bit skittish, fear not, it's definitely worth the extra cost to get the VC version. The faster and quieter focusing mechanism is also nice. The non-VC version is LOUD and slow when it focuses, but this lens is silent. If I *had* to complain about something, I guess it would be the weight. It's a HEAVY lens, especially compared to the non-VC version, but it's not so heavy that it's difficult to shoot with or anything. I've hand-held for several hours without a problem. For video, this lens is also decent, but the VC does tend to "jerk" around a little bit, but it's still infinitely better than not having VC for video. The focus ring is large and nicely damped, so getting focus manually is a breeze, although the autofocus is also nearly silent and can't be heard on video, if you choose to go that route. Overall, I would probably rate it at about a 4 out of 5 for video if you need super long focal length. The jerking motion of the VC is the only reason it wouldn't get 5 stars, but then if you're at 300mm, you probably shouldn't be hand-holding for video anyway, but it is *possible* with this lens, which is really nice.Overall, this is a lens that I am very happy with and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who wants a good 70-300mm at a decent price. And of course B&H's shipping and customer service is top-notch, so you won't go wrong there.

I use product for wildlife photography, and has been a great addition to my other lenses. It most likely will be my "go to" lens when going on my adventures to document my wildlife sightings. The photos are very clear and concise and really "pop" when in right settings. I would highly recommend as a primary or secondary lens.

I purchased this lens as a replacement for my 55mm-200mm kit lens I received with my D5200. The feel of the lens great, it feels sturdy and looks like it is constructed well. I have used it for about a month now and while shots I have taken with the lens typically come out a bit underexposed I can usually compensate on the camera or in post processing. Overall I am happy with the purchase.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLRs & 35mm Film Cameras:

I use this lens on a D7000, and I am very pleased with it. I use the lens mostly for wildlife and nature photography, but also when photographing people outdoors.

I consistently get sharp images with good colors and contrast all the way up to 300mm (as long as I keep shutter speed up). Chromatic abberation can be seen in some shots, but is within my acceptable range. I'm not a fan of image stabilization, but the VC is effective and useful in some situations. AF is fast enough for me, and quiet.

The lens is softer at maximum aperture and benefits from stopping down (best around f8). Because of this I try not to use it wide open. The thing I most dislike about the Tamron 70-300 VC is the way the bokeh looks in shots where there are a lot of fine structures behind the suject (e.g. chainlink, grass, branches).

Overall, I find the Tamron 70-300 VC to be a very good lens, but not a perfect lens. At the asking price, it is an easy 5 stars.

Comments about Tamron SP 70-300mm f/4-5.6 Di VC USD Telephoto Zoom Lens for Nikon Digital SLRs & 35mm Film Cameras:

Mainly used for sports and photojournalism -- I needed a lens that could get the job done without breaking the bank as I'm normally a studio guy -- and now I'm picking up freelance work. I went with the Tamron after reading fellow positive reviews -- and now after using it almost daily in the past few weeks -- I'm a definite fan. The AF is a pinch slow sometimes but on a Nikon d610 with the 39 AF points -- I shift some of that blame to the body. The Image Stabilization in the lens or "VC" - Vibration Compensation works perfectly though -- very impressed.Overall, for $[*] (and the mail-in rebate still going on right now) -- This is a definite buy if you don't own a solid mid-range telephoto lens.

I shoot with Nikon D800 and originally got this lens for my backpacking trips. It's lighter than my fast Nikon lenses and, because of its low price, I wouldn't have to worry if it got damaged in the wilderness conditions. But when I started using it for event and portrait photography, I discovered how great this lens was. Sharp, nice bokeh, great VC, and good color rendition. I'm as much of a snob as the next guy and have a strong Nikon loyalty. In fact, I was originally buying this lens' Nikon equivalent until the salesperson at the camera store suggested the Tamron as a better choice.

What a great lens. I bought it despite mixed reviews and I'm very happy with it. In fact, I'm now considering getting rid of my Nikon 24-85 and replacing with a Tamron. This lens produces much more vivid colors, crisp, sharp, good stabilization, also a great value. You can't go wrong :) Try it!

Mounted to my Nikon D7100 the sharpness and effectivness of the image stabilization is excellent. I have tested the following all hand held 300 mm:- I can easily read 6 point type on a wine bottle in a poorly lit room against a window with no flash.- I can easily read the numbers off a license plate tag at 60'- I can easily see finger prints and patterns in the iris of the eye of an orangutan at 100'- I can quickly focus on rapidly moving 5-year olds.Bear in mind if you look closely at the reviews, sharpness varies with the camera bodies. The D7100 without the low-pass filter is among the sharpest. Many others have compared to the equivelent Nikon and most consider the Tamron better than or equal to the equivelent Nikon. The only thing I have against the lens is that the auto-focus and image stabilization switch is easily changed while taking camera out of your bag or even while holding it. Make sure to check these switches are in the desired position before shooting. Some have commented on the uneven zoom action. I agree that issue exists, but when I am shooting I am concentrating on the subject and do not notice any uneveness. I don't know if I could ask for much more from a lens at this price. I believe this is an easy choice to make over Nilkon as the quality of image is excellent and with the price varience, the minor cons can easily be overlooked.

This has been a very nice addition to my kit lens and my 35mm Prime lens. Living in Colorado presents a lot of photo opportunities and this has come in handy for those occasions. I don't feel it's as soft on the long end as some say and the VC is quite amazing and truly effective. I do have some focus hunting occasionally on the long end but it's very minimal in most cases.I'm very happy I decided on this and the rebate certainly didn't hurt!

I mainly use this product for wildlife photography. After spending months researching this lens and the Nikkor counterpart, I chose this one. Best decision I've ever made on camera equipment. Not only is it cheaper, but the build quality and optics are outstanding. The only downsides I have found is that it does not come with a tripod collar and is finicky when focusing in low light. If you are debating on buying this lens or the Nikkor 70-300, but your brand loyalty aside and go with the Tamron. You will not be disappointed.

I purchased this Tamron lense a few weeks ago and I have taken over 1000 images already. My answer is "Yes". I really like the quality of my images. If you have a kit lense you will see a big difference in quality with this lense. More more sharpness and nicer colors. I cannot afford a Nikon but this lense is worth the money.

I purchased this lens to use with my Nikon D5200 and have been extremely pleased with the results. My main photographic interests are birds, and I have yet to be disappointed by the speed or image quality the Tamron 70-300mm has supplied. Images are really quite sharp even at 300, and this includes birds captured in low light or at great distances. At the longest focal leng, it doesn't quite deliver the spectacular bokeh a more expensive lens might offer, but I tend to do a lot of post-processing and this is generally easy to compensate for. The autofocus is faster than anything I've encountered before with a lens at this price-point, and the whole thing handles very well. I'm not totally sure of its ability to withstand the elements yet, and hopefully will not experience any issues along those lines, but for a bird photographer hoping to save some money while getting really great pictures, this is a fabulous option.

I don't own, and nor have I used, the Nikkor 70-300 VR. But I can tell you this is a sharp lens by Tamron, even at 300mm. The autofocus is nothing special. And it makes some noise. But it does a decent job, except of course in low light. But that is what happens with these lens below 2.8. Overall, good build quality, good sharpness, decent bokeh, and not very heavy. Nice for wildlife and nature photography.
