The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens from Nikon is a compact 5.5x zoom F-mount lens for DX-format DSLR cameras. It's equivalent to 82.5-450mm in the 35mm format. This lens is a versatile choice for travel, landscapes, portraits, and distant subjects. The lens focuses to 4.6' at every focal length and features the Silent Wave Motor for smooth and virtually silent AF action.

The VR II image stabilization allows you to handhold the camera at up to 3 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible, assuring dramatically sharper still images and stable video capture. One High Refractive Index element and two ED glass elements minimize aberrations for sharp, color-accurate images throughout the zoom range. The lens elements have been treated with Nikon's Super Integrated Coating - an optical lens coating process that maximizes light transmission while enhancing clarity and contrast.

I bought this lens to experiment with HD video features of one of my Nikons. I also own 2.8/70-200mm lens - obviously, there's no comparison. But for the price, I am quite impressed with the lens performance. Pictures are relatively sharp to the edges almost throughout the whole range. Pin cushion/barrel distortions are acceptable. VR is definitely a big plus! It doesn't have the manufacturer's precision of the higher-end lenses, the barrel is a little wobbly. Also I wish the lens was at least one f-stop faster. But again, you get what you paid for.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I shoot a lot of baseball, and this fits the bill for getting shows of infielders, hitters and pitchers. Combined with 6FPS shooting images are sharp, and shallow depth of field on certain images adds a great focus to images.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

Love using this for outdoors for animal photography. It gets that extra reach you need for close ups and the vibration reduction works as it should. The only real issue I see is the low aperature. Should only be used in good lighting situations, and it also is hefty, adding a noticeable amount of weight to the camera, but that is not so unusual for zoom lenses such as this. Good budget lens for you DX format collection.

Using this thing on a FX sensor has been amazing simply for the fact that I can now reach out, distance-wise, to my subjects by another 30%. There's a crop box in your viewfinder showing the actual frame captured when coupled with the full-frame sensor. As the description says, it's like having a 82.5 - 450mm lens on the FX sensor. great for sports, too. It is very lightweight and pretty good, even in theatre (performing arts) lighting. The bokeh and depth of field are not great, but when you're at 5.6 zoomed out, that's what one should expect.

I went shoping for a 300mm lens and got one for $[$] ... well you get what you paid for. I had to return it and got this new one. I love it. It's really worth the extra $ and even though it's not top of the line is perfect for my uses. I'm a hobbiest and I like to take photos of backyard birds and the night sky. Together with my tripod and remote shutter this baby works beautifully. It has great depth of field. Is fast and silent. I would recommend it to anyone in a heartbeat.

As a beginner, I found this lense to have great range, ease of use and lite enough to allow me to be encouraged to use.n The autofocus works quickly and quietly providing great, encouraging photos. While photography is complicated, the lense helped to simplify use as I managed the learning curve with great photo successes. Even my goofs were made better with the lense, yet teaching me the basics and not so basic skills. Price was also doable when having to add on to the body cost.

Comments about Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens:

I use this lens for landscape, wildlife, and portrait shots. I can use this lens for all these types of photography because of its versatility. I have not found anything about this lens that I don't like.
