While the AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens from Nikon is designed primarily for use with FX-format D-SLR cameras, it's equally at home on any DX-format D-SLR camera. As a standard 5.0x zoom on an FX-format camera body, it's perfect for landscapes, portraits, and weddings - it's an excellent choice for a perfect take-along-everywhere lens. On a DX-format camera, the focal length gets a 1.5x bump that turns it into a formidable longer-range optic with enough wide angle for all but the widest of shots.

The AF-S 24-120 ED VR is a versatile imaging tool with a constant maximum aperture of f/4.0 - this enables photographers to maintain exposure settings throughout the entire zoom range. For those critical focusing-moments - the M/A focus mode switch allows the shooter to quickly change between manual and autofocus modes.

Nikon's optical engineers have graced the lens elements with their proprietary Super Integrated Coating- a superior multicoating process that enhances light transmission for maximum clarity, crispness, and contrast. Additionally this NIKKOR offering also benefits from Nikon's very own Nano Crystal Coat - a high-tech lens treatment that ensures maximum imaging quality by limiting or eliminating the negative effects from ghosting, flare, and glare.

Low-light shooters will greatly appreciate the benefits from the addition of Nikon's VR II image stabilization system. This amazing internal virtual-tripod allows photographers to work with shutter-speeds up to 4x slower than usual - whether it's a candle-lit snap-shot or a moody portrait taken in a dark alley-way under a dingy street-lamp - hand-held photographers can rely on the AF-S 24-120 ED VR for sharp, clear, and extremely well-detailed imaging.

Compact & Versatile 5x Standard Zoom Lens with f/4 Maximum Aperture
Perfect for landscapes, portraits, weddings, and distant subjects. Offers a constant maximum aperture to maintain exposure settings throughout the entire zoom range
Extended Range on Nikon DX-format D-SLR Cameras
Angle of view is equivalent to a focal length of 36-180mm in DX-format cameras.
Nikon VR II (Vibration Reduction) Image Stabilization
Vibration Reduction technology that's engineered specifically for each VR NIKKOR lens - enables handheld shooting at up to 4 shutter speeds slower than would otherwise be possible. This ensures dramatically sharper still images and video capture.
2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) Elements
Offers superior sharpness and color correction by effectively minimizing chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture setting.
3 Aspherical Lens Elements
Aspherical lens elements virtually eliminate coma and other types of aberration, even when shooting at the widest available aperture.
Nano Crystal Coat
Further reduces ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.
Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC)
Enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare.
M/A Focus Mode Switch
Enables quick changes between manual and autofocus operation.
Internal Focus (IF)
Provides fast and quiet autofocus without changing the length of the lens to maintain the working distance throughout the focus range. It also keeps the front element from spinning, which maintains the position of a polarizer or lens hood.
Exclusive Nikon Silent Wave Motor (SWM)
Enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
Rounded 9-Blade Diaphragm
Renders images with a more natural appearance in out-of-focus areas (bokeh)

Before ordering the Nikkor AF-S 24-120mm f:4 G ED VR N lens, I did my usual research: I read all the reviews on the B&H website and also checked its MTF graph on the [@]. I also checked the MTF graphs of comparable lenses on both the [@]. In addition, I studied the report on an in-depth trial of this lens on the [@].Many reviews of this lens strongly criticise its distortion and vignetting. The Mansurov test, while showing some distortion (barrel distortion at 24mm and pincushion from 28 to 120mm) and vignetting on FX sensors, indicated that this was not a particular problem with general photography. My own comparison with tests of similar lenses and study of the relevant MTF graphs led me to believe that the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 ought to be little different from that of other lenses with a similar zoom ratio. Besides, the MTF graphs clearly showed that the fall-off in performance only became significant beyond 15mm from the picture centre. In other words, vignetting should not be a problem on DX sensors.I also ran a test series with my Sigma DG 28-70mm f:2.8 EX lens and got very slight pincushion distortion throughout its range – a fact which I had never noticed before, even though I have used it extensively for three years. It is one of the best lenses I have ever owned, giving excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition and no vignetting over its full zoom range.I cannot understand why the new Nikkor 24-120 lens has attracted so much adverse criticism, while other lenses with similar characteristics are accepted without a murmur. As my cameras all have DX sensors (2xD90s, 1xD300S) I got to thinking that I might find the performance of the Nikkor 24-120 quite acceptable. And because the zoom range is particularly suitable for everyday carry, I decided to give it a try.I received my copy from B&H on 17th January, 2011, and immediately ran some tests for distortion and vignetting on all three cameras. As I expected, distortion was minimal and vignetting absent. Unlike the Mansurov test, my test showed slight pincushion distortion all the way from 24 to 120mm. It could only be noticed on straight vertical or horizontal lines, placed close to the edges of the photograph, and even so, one had to look for it.All such things are relative and in the eye of the beholder: what I consider to be slight distortion, might give a photographer of architecture the cold shivers. But then, this lens is not meant for architectural photography. The PC Nikkors are designed for that. Neither is it a macro lens. After the distortion tests, I ran a series of tests of the Nikon GP-1 GPS unit, which I had received together with the lens (see separate review) taking hundreds of photographs to establish the accuracy/repeatability of the GPS readings. All these photographs showed excellent sharpness, contrast and colour rendition at all focal lengths and apertures, even wide open – and many of these photos were taken in very poor light. In fact, these test pictures were indistinguishable from similar ones taken with my Sigma 28-70mm f:2.8 – and I love that Sigma. It is as good as they come! The 24-120 lens is very solidly constructed, focussing, even in low-light conditions, is quick and accurate, all controls are handy, smooth and easy to work with, and the VR system works perfectly.Incidentally, one of the B&H reviewers stated that his lens was made in China, citing that as a minus point. My lens was made in Thailand, as were all my camera bodies. I frankly doubt that Nikon has a plant in China, producing the same lens.Would I buy another copy? Heck, yes! I can highly recommend this lens!

I had pre-ordered this lens and had anxiously awaited it for over a month to make life easier for me when shooting a wedding. It was to replace my Nikkor 24-70mm f2.8 so that I wouldn't have to switch to my 70-200mm f2.8 VR as often in certain situations. After using the new lens exclusively with the D700 on a wedding, I was appalled when I processed the images on my computer. Every one except for the most extreme telephoto focal lengths caved in at the middle area of all four sides, even when I crouched down to take a photo at a direct angle to the subject. I had to adjust each image 8 points in the Adobe Lightroom 3 parallax distortion function to make it look normal. Other than that, it focused as well as the 24-70 f2.8 and the optics seemed acceptable. Hopefully I just got a defective unit because I can't believe Nikon would knowingly put out a product like this. As usual, B&H's return process was hassle free and I was treated with respect. I'm going to e-mail a sampling of the images to Nikon to get their reaction.

Great lens optically . Pretty sharp through the focal range. No flare or ghosting. Also very good at F/4.This is a great all around lens on my Nikon D800. Optically, no complaints. Focus is quick.

Downside is it is heavy and bulky and not something that I like to carry around all day. Also, it is not weather sealed like Nikon pro line lens. The construction does not give one the impression that this lens will have a long life of heavy use.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I just bought and like it.
I am a photo enthusiast and I like to shoot my family locally and during our many around the world trips.
I have just replaced my my 28-200 lens from 15 years ago, and I must say, Nikon has continued to do a great job
The construction is solid, the overall finish of my pictures is very good.
This is a great all around lens for every day shots with very adequate versatility. This is also a decently fast lens that allows to shoot my little kids without problems
there is some noticeable distortion with wider zoom and I'm still getting used to the position of the zoom ring.

Overall this is another great product by Nikon

I bought this lens to replace the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm 1:3.5-4.5G. Although a bit heavier to handle, the clarity is amazing. I love the extended focal range which allows me to go from portraits to landscapes in a moments notice. This has become my new "everyday" lens and have proven itself many times over.

A walk around lens, on the F4 series is biot as sharp as the 16-35 or the 70-200 which is superb. I believe that Nikon must upgrade the optics to include in a "new" hole trinity on F4 lenses. Forf less money go for the 28-300, at least you gain more range and similar quality. A little disappointed with the images from this lens

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I recently purchased the AF-S Nikkor 24-124mm Zoom Lens by Nikon for a trip to Yellowstone. I used it with my Nikon D610 camera and it turned out to be a perfect around lens for all of the beautiful scenes at this famous national park. It focused quickly and correctly and never had a bad photo out of hundreds that I took while on this vacation. The only thing that you have to be careful about is not to put 2 filters on the lens since this will cause a vignette like affect at 24 mm. I had a UV filter on the lens mostly to protect the lens, then added a circular polarizer lens to improve the photos for certain shots and noticed that at 24 mm, you could see the corners of the photo being clipped. All in all it is a great walk around lens. I found this lens to be only slightly heavy.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

I had an initial review on this lense and I love it! But now after working with it some more and finding its sweet spot, I found that at 120mm setting, the images are a bit (pixel peep microscope eval)on the soft side.

I backed it up to 100mm to see if I can squeeze out more sharpness out of it and detail. My results are amazing (to me at least)!! See images below.

These are taken at f5.6, 1/160s, ISO 1000 with VR on. This bad boy can get pretty close creating such Bokehlicious!!

BTW, is forgot to mention on my initial review why I chose this over the Nikon 24-70 f2.8 is that the 24-120 f/4 has the super useful VRII mode. More stops at my disposal if needed. I can get away with images that razor sharp at 1/5sec @120mm on a still object. With the D4s video capability, the VRII is a VERY added plus!!!

Love this lense! So glad with my purchase!! Stop reading any more reviews. Just BUY IT!!!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

First off, B&H Photo is outstanding! Great service and super fast delivery!

It was between the Nikon 24-70 2.8 or this one. I chose the 24-120 F4 because I needed the extra reach to 120mm for a practical walkaround lense. Also, being mated to the D4s with it's clean high ISO to 6400, it made up for not being a F2.8.

Did several testing making sure the optics are sharp. I must say, this lense ROCKS!!!

Compared it to my 70-200 VRII f2.8, and its very very close to image quality. The 70-200 had a slightly more contrast and detail BUT I had to really pixel peep to even notice.

Auto focus speed kept up with the ballroom dancers at a competition. Over 3000 shots and MAYBE>>> less than 10 shot missed focus. And that's blazing away at 11 FPS!! I was able to freeze the action at 1/200 at 5.6.

Attached image is my 24-120 at 50mm f4.0, ISO 200
                      1/1600s.

If your camera can handle clean High ISO, then the f4.0 is not a factor. This is a PERFECT travel lense!! LOVE IT!!!!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-120mm f/4G ED VR Zoom Lens:

By comparison, for years I've been using the great Nikon 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8 VR1 lenses, many times under light levels limited to around f/3.2 so I'm familiar with their high performance at wide aperture. I consider this lens to be nearly in the same professional quality class. Clarify "nearly" only because it is not an f/2.8, but please read on.Photos I've made at wide-open aperture with the 24-120 f/4 are not as sharp as those from the 24-70 f/2.8, by critical examination, but they certainly are not disappointing. My photos do not appear to be soft or lacking detail. They seem on par with the 70-200 f/2.8 lens when used at wide apertures. Some reviews criticize the lack of perfectly sharp corners when used on an FX camera, but I don't see that in my pictures taken with the Nikon 7100, even when there are details of interest out toward the edges. And in my professional career I've never had an editor or publication designer even notice corners. Other comments criticize its rectilinear curvature at widest focal length of 24mm, again with an FX camera, but I don't care because I'm not shooting architecture with it. Its VR is useful but not quite as effective as Nikon's newer VR versions, such as found in the (awesome) Nikon 70-200 f/4 tele zoom, or even their 18-105 kit lens, both which have extraordinarily good VR.This is a very good lens in my opinion. Nice and bright f/4, sharp, focuses very well, useful VR, well built, fun to have on the camera and is lighter and smaller than the 24-70 f/2.8. The Nikon rebate early in 2014 put this at just the right price.

I purchased this lens for a trip to Italy. I didn't want to carry the bulkier Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens, which has a shorter range. I think it will be a versatile lens; most of my work is with long telephotos (600mm) and an 80-400mm zoom used in wildlife photography.

This lens can go on to the full frame camera in the future. Like the portrait and landscape ability of the lens which works nicely as a set of three lens with quality,16-35, 24-120 and 80-200. As a general walk around lens at f:8 you can be ready for a lot of fun photography.

I purchased this lens to replace my aging Nikkor 24-120 f/3.5-5.6 lens. It's slightly bigger than the one it replaces but, hey, it's got a constant aperture. Most importantly, it has a non-rotating front element. Cannot comment on optical quality yet since I haven't use it all that much. I used to carrying 6 lens and two full size bodies when traveling. They are just getting too heavy for my aging body. For my next trip I'll bring this one, a 17-35 f/2.8, and a Nikon Df.
