The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens from Nikon is short telephoto prime lens designed for FX-format DSLR cameras, but when used with cameras with a DX-format sensor it has a 127.5mm equivalent focal length. It provides an effective focal length for distortion free portraiture as well as other telephoto applications. Its ultra fast f/1.4 maximum aperture is very effective in low light and along with the rounded 9-blade diaphragm will create natural out-of-focus backgrounds that will isolate your main subject for an impressive professional look.

The M/A focus mode switch allows you to quickly change between manual and autofocus and the Silent Wave Motor and internal focusing system enable fast and quiet autofocus, ideal for recording video. Nano Crystal and Super Integrated lens coating enhance light transmission, reducing ghosting and flare.

High performance f/1.4 mid-range telephoto lens offers a bright viewfinder image along with beautiful background blur, ideal for portraiture.
DX-format DSLR angle of view is equivalent to a 127.5mm focal length in the 35mm format.
Nano Crystal Coat and Super Integrated Coating enhance light transmission efficiency and reduce ghosting and interior flare across a wide range of wavelengths for even greater image clarity.
Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables fast, accurate and quiet autofocus.
M/A Focus Mode Switch enables quick changes between manual and autofocus operation.
Internal Focus (IF) provides fast and quiet autofocus while maintaining the working distance throughout the focus range. This also helps to maintain the positioning of a polarizer or lens hood.
Rounded 9-blade diaphragm renders a more natural appearance to out-of-focus image elements.

1. Focus speed

I expected the new lens to focus faster, and it is in fact .. quiet. It just IS in focus .. all of a sudden. It really is much much faster. This alone would've made it an automatic upgrade for me.

If you're used to the f1.4D buzzing sound as it focuses .. especially when it hunts a bit, then this lens will be a real treat for you.

2. Focus accuracy

Better yet, I frequently enough got mis-focused shots with the f1.4D ... but with the f1.4G it appears to nail focus at f1.4 more often than the f1.4D
Focusing on a model's eyes during various simple portraits of her, the f1.4G nailed it more often. Pretty much every time. It is difficult making a qualitative assessment here, working hand-held with an f1.4 optic. If either you or your subject breathes, the plane of focus shifts. Despite that, the f1.4G definitely appeared more confident. The focus was accurate and just *there*.

So this is a big improvement.

3. Sharpness at f1.4
I honestly couldn't tell a difference with the central area. For properly focused shots, you could count eye-lashes on photos taken with either lens. Towards the edges though, the G lens is significantly sharper.

4. Contrast and control of flare ...
Here is where the other great news is ... the G lens controls flare much better than the D series lens if you shoot in back-lit situations.

5. Bokeh

I can't see a difference in the bokeh in various test shots with a model. I photographed railings and grid-like iron-work .. things which very quickly show up a lens when it has harsh bokeh. But to my eye, these two lenses had the same great bokeh.

Final initial assessment ... focus speed is greatly improved. Focus accuracy is improved. Edge to edge sharpness is significantly better. And the new lens handles flare like a champ.

Delighted to receive a rare copy of this back ordered lens but the one I received had convergence issues at 8 feet and beyond. My copy drove me to discover the micro metering adjustments of my D700 which helped tame unwanted flaring. Even with its problems, the lens revealed phenomenal detail and immaculate sharpness; this disparity in clarity (no rhyme intended) drove me insane - like a bad love affair. So much so good yet something so wrong. To prove I wasn't crazy I rented the Sigma 85 1.4 which rendered absolute sharpness in comparable shots. But I'm holding out to see if a replacement for the Nikon will be spot on - I crave the multi-dimensiional imaging promise of the glass and look forward to joining the 5* club when I receive a good copy.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens:

There is no debating the sharpness of this lens and the creamy bokeh. However, a lens that costs this much ought to have a much closer focusing distance. Two feet at a minimum. The 85 f/1.8G focuses to 2.6 feet. I am constantly frustrated by this long focus distance.Second, the focusing is slow compared to some of my pro zoom lenses from Nikon. It should be faster. Finally, this lens is overpriced given the value of the 85 f/1.8G and the cost/value ratio of that lens.If you are a pro photographer, this lens is the one to go with. But beware reselling it will be tough given the 85 f/1.8's popularity and value. I lost about $ when I sold mine, ironically, the cost of a new 85 f/1.8!

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens:

I traded my old 85mm 1.4d for this newer lens. The new lens is sharper, it's nicer to focus since the focus overide that doesn't require changing from auto to manual and then re-aimimg the lens. The hood is much easier to use and store since it inverts on the lens for storing. Also I can put the lens cap on without removing the hood. It focuses relatively fast, not as fast as the 28-70 and others have said that it focuses slightly slower than the old model, but I wouldn't consider this a problem. I love the ability to vary my depth of field that this wide f stop gives. I also like the way the subjects pop from the background with this lens. Both images were shot with a D810.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens:

This lens is an exceptional portrait lens. I do a lot of studio and environmental portraiture photography and this lens provides exceptional sharpness in conjunction with my new Nikon D810. You will need to stop down the lens to f/2.8 or higher when taking close portraits due to the very shallow depth of field at f/1.4. The bokeh is very nice. Exceptional quality, sturdy, everything that you would expect with a Nikkor G series lens.

Started buying Nikon equipment in 1966 when I was stationed in Japan. This is by far the highest quality lens I have owned. A bit pricey but if you can afford it go for it. You wont be sorry

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens:

Great resolution. Manual focus override. Solid, well made. I'm very impressed with this lens and use it mostly for portraits of friends, family.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens:

I shoot with the D810 and LOVE this lens. I have used the 1.8f 85mm and while that is a great lens, there is no comparison to this 1.4f. I bought this for portrait work obviously and used it this weekend for a wedding shoot. This is a must have lens.

Great portrait lens, could be sharper.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens:

The lens is very well build (comparable in quality to the AF-S 35mm f/1.4 or the AF-s 105mm f/2.8 micro). The Autofocus is slow but always accurate (on Nikon D800) it is not an issue for a portrait lens, unless you're shooting indoor sport.Sharpness is excellent at f/2 and slowerapertures, but it is always a little soft at f/1.4 (even with AF fine-tune)ED elements could have help there.Contrast is very good, colors are neutral. You CAN NOT mount any Nikon teleconverter on that lens.Minimum focusing distance could be better (85cm minimum) 75cm would have been nice.I get great results indoor at ISO 800 f/2 and preset white balance on my Nikon D800 (see first picture sample).Overall it's a great pro lens that will last you many years.

Comments about Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G Lens:

The lens just do a great portrait job, exactly as I expected and read about. Felt nervous paying such a big money for a lens I hadn't tried but now I am absolutely satisfied. So far I haven't found any cons.
