The Marshall 5" On-Camera Monitor is a high performance color monitor that mounts to the top of a camcorder or video DSLR using the provided shoe mount adapter. The monitor delivers superior brightness and sharpness, supports a wide range of formats and markers, and offers versatile viewing angles. Major monitor controls such as brightness, contrast, and color are easily accessed from the monitor's front panel. There are also four preset keys so that the videographer can, at the touch of a button, instantly access often used functions.

To help the videographer maintain optimum image quality through various lighting and scene scenarios, this monitor offers a number of test tools including False Color Filter and Peaking Filter functions.

False Color Filter is used to maintain a natural look for people and objects when there's a change in a camera's brightness and luminance levels. Peaking Filter employs a color to black and white changeover method to help ascertain what areas of the image are lacking in focus or sharpness. With these tools at hand the videographer can shoot with greater confidence, knowing that what is shown on the screen is an accurate representation of what is being recorded or broadcasted.

This monitor operates off of the included power adapter or via battery power (4 AA) for field operation. With this level of performance and versatility, this monitor offers the perfect alternative to the often inadequate viewfinder and flip-out screens found on many of today's cameras.

False Colors
The False Color Filter is used to aid in the setting of camera exposure. As the camera Iris is adjusted, elements of the image will change color based on the luminance or brightness values. This enables proper exposure to be achieved without the use of costly, complicated external test equipment.

To best utilize this feature, you must understand the color chart and have a basic understanding of camera exposure. Normally, when shooting subjects like people, it is common practice to set exposure of faces to the equivalent of approximately 56 IRE. The False Color Filter will show this area as the color PINK on the monitor. Therefore, as you increase exposure (open the IRIS), your subject will change color as indicated on the chart: PINK, then GREY, then a few shades of YELLOW. Overexposed subjects (above 101 IRE) on the monitor will be shown as RED.

In addition, underexposed subjects will show as DEEP-BLUE to DARK-BLUE, with clipped-blacks indicated with a FUCHSIA-like color. Lastly, the color GREEN is used to indicate elements of the image that are approximately 45 IRE. This represents a "neutral" or "mid-level" exposure commonly used for objects (not people).
Peaking Filter
The Peaking Filter is used to aid the camera operator in obtaining the sharpest possible picture. When activated, all color will be removed from the display and a black-and-white image will remain. The internal processor will display RED color on the screen where sharp edges appear.

When the camera operator adjusts (or "racks") the focus control (on the camera lens), different parts of the image will have RED colored edges. This indicates that this portion of the image is sharp or in focus. Final focus is achieved by racking the camera lens focus control back and forth until the desired portion of the image has RED colored edges.

Please note that this feature is most effective when the subject is properly exposed and contains enough contrast to be processed.

Looking through these reviews, it seems some folks don't fully understand using this with a DSLR. Yes, with anything but a 7D, you'll get a small image. Small HD's monitors automatically enlarge the DSLR signal to fill the screen, and when the Marshall came out it was about $200 less - Small has dropped their price for their smallest monitor, so you might check that out.

Peaking: DSLRs are notorious for their aliasing issues, and most monitors will indeed show "almost everything" as in-focus. It's not an issue with the monitor, it's how the footage is rendered. Small's current models have a focus assist that really does seem to work much better though.

Battery & power switch: both kind of lame. I wrap mine in a Domke wrap with a piece of cardboard that protects the power switch. I also switch it off often when not needed (with a "real" video cam anyway). Many people report using this with a d-tap, and the specs seem to support just getting a battery plate for your DSLR. But, again, Small sells plates with theirs.

Blue-only: yes, you can calibrate this monitor - however, DSLRs don't have color bars. I calibrate it with a Panasonic camera and then stick it on my DSLR when needed.

When this came out, it was a great idea - with the Small HD's price drop, you may be better off with it. But the color rendering of the little Marshall? Really great when properly setup with color bars.

Great monitor, but it has a few quite serious glitches:

    1. The power button's location is absolutely ridiculous. You have to remove the batteries, otherwise wherever you place the monitor it just turns on and drains the batteries.

    2. The HDMI Auto scale (for when you connect it to the canon 5D and start recording) is no good. It scales it with a correct ratio, but to a very small size.
That means the image you see on the monitor when recording is only slightly bigger than the one on the Canon 5D monitor.
There is NO WAY to manually scale the image so you use the full size of the monitor. Even when you are not recording and just using the Camera's LiveView feed, there are 2 black bars on the sides of the image with unused monitor space. The only time when you use all of the monitor screen is when you view the recorded images in the camera with the play button. Not good.

    3. The batteries and charger you get with the monitor are as cheap as they can get, so you might want to buy some good quality batteries + charger.

    4. There is no HDMI cable included in the package
and more importantly, there is NO HDMI Pass through

    5. The screen is VERY shiny, which means you will get loads of reflections on it if you dont use a screen hood.

Other than that the image quality seems to be good, and the plastic looks pretty solid. It just seems to be overpriced for what it is. I would only recommend it because there is not much other options out there for a 5" Monitor that I know of, except maybe the SmallHD DP6.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:

I recently purchased my V-LCD50 used from a local video Pro for less than half the cost of new; he had three Marshall monitors and needed to thin out the herd. This rig is in A++ condition and I couldn't be more pleased. This rig is a great tool for focus assist, and is so light it doesn't tear up the mounts on my camera or Lamparte rig. It's totally pro looking, is well built, and the Marshall tech support is outstanding. The short battery life was a concern, but for me, easily solved with an inexpensive Canon adapter plate. The other Con is that the on/off switch is in the wrong place. It can accidentally be switched on - draining battery power without you realizing it.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:

Bought a while ago and I recognzie the technology now should bring this price down. I got it at $[$](or so). Bottom line this is a good starter monitor. But don't plan on swapping out AAs on a shoot, and especially don't plan to do it if you are using rechargarbles. You will get 30 minutes or so and will have to look like a junky rummaging through batteries just to keep this thing juiced. The supplied alternate current is a small cable and will make for an annoying tie job if you want to run it off a stinger. So step up and buy a battery adapter that screws to the back of the monitor. Marshal makes them for canon and Sony batteries. Not so bad when you do that. The HD input has a tendency to wiggle out so make sure to secure any slack. All that said this monitor has some great features. The false colors renders the shadow to light gradations that are very nuianced. That alone is a great tool to dial in your lights while you work the set. I really enjoyed that feature. The matte finish doesn't glare like the small hd does, but the small hd is definately more maluable onto a rig. This thing is a beast. But if you enjoy making things work than you will enjoy this thing. Ultimately I still own it, but only really bring it out when I know I have 20minutes before shoot days to get this thing up and running. I also mount this thing on a glidcam vest at the bottom section of the sled and can't complain. 3stars because of the price contrasted against the weak battery option; my fault, you may want to just upgrade and get the one you know you can already juice with existing batts.

I had bad experiences with on-camera monitors before with incorrect colors, poor quality, and few or useless features.

This is great monitor with all the bells and whistles. Colors are right on and provide several calibration tools. Focus and exposure features help achieve great quality video results and has several options for power. For extended use, I recommend bringing extra batteries. The rechargeable batteries that are included provide less than an hour of power. Get an adapter and attach a large battery!

I use this with a Panasonic HMC40 jib setup. Works great and helps me capture professional video with a low budget.

A small, lightweight monitor for use on DSLR shoots. Has helped greatly in the last several shoots since purchasing it. The ability to angle the monitor at any angle independent of the camera is a must. The monitor easily fits into our pelican case and doesn't take up much room and is lightweight. We also purchased the Canon battery adapter so we only need one type of battery (LP-E6) for a shoot. Would recommend the hood, battery adapter, a good arm and also protection for your DSLR HDMI port, having heard horror stories of busted HDMI ports costing almost as much to fix as a whole camera body. We went with Zacuto gear and the setup is VERY solid and robust.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:

I use this monitor on a canon 600D/T3i.

Batteries & charger supplied with unit - BIG PLUS. the screen is powered by 4 standard AA batteries. You get about 75 minutes from the supplied batteries, so obviously additional batteries are recommended. The unit can also be powered by the also included mains adapter.
The screen automatically adjusts to differing input resolutions, but can be over-ridden to pixel to pixel mapping. this will crop resolutions above the screens maximum resolution, but the mapping/downsampling in fit to screen mode is brilliant & gives a very sharp picture.
The extensive menus allow for much adjustment & customisation, & a number of functions can be programmed to the 4 custom function buttons on the front panel.
Also included was a very useful sunshade, but i believe this is a limited time offer so may not apply.

FROM THE YOUTUBE VIDEO'S...IT LOOKED BIGGER THAN WHAT IT DOES IN REAL LIFE. BUT IT HAS A GREAT PICTURE, AND IT'S NOT TO BIG FOR THE USE WITH THE PANASONIC AF-100. WORKS GREAT!

Used with Nikon D7000, great for focusing, works as described. A bit of a battery eater, would get 5 stars if you could attach a Sony or similar battery plate.

I shoot both interviews locked of on tripods and some run and gun handheld stuff. This monitor is a great way to easily set up your shots and check exposure. The focus tool is not very useful because my lenses often have VERY shallow DOF and it seems that it highlights things not in sharp focus also, kind of hard to use. Also, I had an issue with my HDMI cable (which works fine) not working on the monitor. I thought the monitor was broken and nearly returned it before buying a new HDMI cable which worked fine. It has worked fine ever since.

Bought to complement an AF100 and sometimes a GH2. Much better colors than onboard screens from those cams. Perfect size for my use, bigger would be less convenient. Love the 1:1 pixel function, like the peaking and false colors. You have to go back to full screen to switch false colors on and off (but it does work in 1:1 mode). Power switch should have been recessed, as everyone already complained. Wish there was attaching points on the sides and top (there is only one on the bottom). Love the power options: AA batteries on the GH2, p-tap on the AF100 rig (through the appropriate Switronix cable). I don't see much competition with those features, size and price point.

Comments about Marshall Electronics 5" On-Camera Monitor:

I used this monitor (as a rental) to try it out on our last music video shoot (outdoors in a remote location). Obviously no AC power so had to rely on battery power. Had to get the AD to run back into town twice for more batteries! The rental house said we would get two hours from each set. Maybe with it's use as a photo-monitor were it turns off for a few minutes. But with video and being on all the time we were lucky to get twenty minutes. Granted it was cold outside, and temperature plays an important part of any battery life. Something to consider though.

Nice picture quality, but not the best. Poor contrast-ratio for outdoors even with a hood. Acceptable for in-doors though. Same issues as stated with power switch (Are you listening to the users Marshall?) Good quality build.

Would I personally buy? Probably not. If they had other options for battery mounts, maybe yes. For the price and semi-pro user, not a bad choice, maybe use a heaping supply of rechargeable. or fabricate a battery belt pack for field use with a voltage converter (have to convert to AC input or something to fit monitor)

And lastly, adding SDI (I know you can get it in other monitors) with loop-thru would be a big PLUS PLUS.

Let me get the positives out of the way first, because there are only a couple: The picture is nice (not awesome), and the false color/peaking filters are great. As for the negatives: When using with a DSLR, the scaling from the camera creates what is essentially the same sized viewing window as the LCD screen on the back of the DSLR.The on/off switch on the back is horribly designed. Everytime is put this monitor in a case the on/off switch is activated, draining the batteries. Now I have to take the batteries out everytime I put it in a case. The battery plate is cheap as well. I broke off a metal piece the second day. There is no indicator (as far as I know) of low battery either. It will just die with no warning.Like I said, this monitor is way overpriced. I wouldn't mind paying $200 for this, but [$] is ridiculous.
