The Nikon EP-5A Power Supply Connector for D3100 lets you power your D3100 camera from the EH-5A or EH-5 power supply and that way save battery power. This connector will come in handy when the camera is being used indoors for extended periods use such as for studio sessions, when uploading files to a PC, or when playing back media on a TV.

I needed to keep the camera on for longer than the 7 hours that a battery would normally last, which is why I bought it.
The 5A plugs into the camera's battery compartment as if it was a battery. But in order to really make use of this power supply connector you also need the EP-5H, which is the actual transformer that plugs into the wall socket. The 5A and 5H are connected together to form a full circuit from the wall into the camera, and then you can operate your camera ad infinitum. This is the only way to power your Nikon D5100 and D3100 with electricity.
Nikon made this as two separate items to buy, which is fine if just one fails, but they could also package this as a complete solution with both items in one box. You absolutely need both.
I ran the camera for 10 hours a day for 5 days with this configuration with no problems.

Good product and worth the money. I was looking for this adapter and most that are available are NOT Nikon, so I was pleased to find this Nikon product. Works very well with the camera. Much better to have this plugged in instead of having to keep charging batteries.

Nikon owners wouldn't have to buy this product if Nikon had supplied the AC converter for each camera like they did with the D-70. Unfortunately Nikon users have to buy the converter and the power supply connector for the D5100 and probably other models as well unless you have older models like the D-70.
