The AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens offers a variety of applications for all kinds of photographers. Many will find uses for its expressive quality of emphasizing subjects in portraits by rendering background elements completely out of focus, while others will use it for its large aperture, superb clarityand immense potential with VR technology for shooting in low light conditions or from moving platforms.

The AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2G AF-S IF-ED lens incorporates Super ED glass - a significant new material that is more resilient than typical fluorite lenses and offers higher optical quality with exceptional consistency even at large apertures.

With a maximum aperture of f/2, this lens is a very fast lens that when combined with the advantages of VR technology, offers photographers remarkable shooting capabilities that may not have been previously possible. Nikon's advanced VR technology eliminates image blur caused by camera shake, particularly when shooting in low-light conditions, allowing photographers to use shutter speeds up to three stops slower (8x) than they would ordinarily use to get sharp, well exposed images.

Note: G-type lenses are fully compatible with all current camera models (as of 01/04). The older camera models F4, N90/s, N70, N8008/s, N6000 will only work in Program and Shutter Priority modes.
Note: VR feature will only work with Nikon's F6, F5, F100, N80, N75, N65, D100 & D1 and D2-series (or any newer model) cameras.
Note: AF-S feature is not supported by certain camera models. Please click here for a list of compatible models.

Fast f/2 capability allows subjects to be given more emphasis by throwing background elements out of focus
Super ED glass excels at eliminating secondary spectrum and correcting chromatic aberration and offers low refractive index and lower dispersion.
Includes: 3 ED elements, 1 Super ED element, 1 Protective glass (meniscus)
Vibration Reduction (VR) minimizes image blur caused by camera shake (cancelable). Two available VR modes :
1) Normal mode is ideal for most common shooting
conditions, panning, and use in combination with a tripod

2) Active mode is better suited to conditions involving more movement, such as
shooting from a moving vehicle or platform

2-Stage Focus Limiter Switch for faster AF operation:
  • Full (∞ - 6.2 ft.)
  • Limit (∞ - 16.4 ft.)
Internal Focusing (IF) design for smoother focusing and better body balance
Built-in M/A switch enables instant switching from autofocus to manual focus
Silent Wave Motor for ultra-fast, ultra-quiet AF
The rounded diaphragm (9 blades) makes out-of-focus elements appear more natural

      Comments about Nikon AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens:

      The results: absolutely fantastic.
Mounted on my d3s, this thing rocks. Played around with my 1.7x for the first time ever - the lens doesn't even know it's there... focus & go.
At 2.0, it's sharper than my 80-200mm nikon.
At 2.8 - it makes circles around the above lens - with razor sharpness.
At 3.3 (with the converter above) it performs without flaw.
They didn't do a great job with the tripod mount, but while it didn't affect the photo, they could have made a little effort to balance it better.
There isn't much more I could add - it just works.
Note: I found mine to overexpose a little on the d3s - but that's great - now I just have a faster shutter.

        Comments about Nikon AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens:

Very sharp, but had to adjust the focus on my D300 to get it spot on. The depth of field is very small, so the focus must be spot on. When you get it right - WOW! But there is a lower ratio of keepers compared to more mundane lenses. I find the VR to only be average - the VR on my 18-200 and 55-300 are better.
The bokeh is excellent, and I find it to work very well with a 1.7X teleconverter.
This is not a lightweight lens and a monopod is essential for longer shoots.

        Comments about Nikon AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens:

This is a photographers wet dream! Paired with the D3s, I can photograph in virtual darkness. Razor sharp. Actually I find I don't need ps sharpening of images. My only comment is it's got small nikon feet, which does not help balance the lense. When you buy this, you need to buy replacement feet with it. On the D3s, the weight will be leaning towards the photographer.

          Comments about Nikon AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens:

I purchased this over the more expensive VR2 version. The only problem I have is that I don't want to take it off my camera. The bokeh is about as good as you can get (even at f/11!). I find shooting at f/2 really fun. The lens is heavy, but I find I can handhold for up to an hour or so. Focus is very fast. Yes, it's expensive - but well worth it in my opinion.

          Comments about Nikon AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens:

Everything that has been said about this lens is true. It is sharp, wide-open; beautiful bokeh. Subject pops off from the background. Be sure to fine-tune the autofocus of this lens with your camera (newer Nikon cameras support this). At f/2 the depth of focus is so thin, you need to make sure that it is set exactly where it ought to be. [My lens front-focused a bit on my D700 until I fine-tuned it (using LensAlign calibration device). Now it focuses perfectly.] Great lens for indoor sports with low-light and no flash.

I shoot motorsports, and this lens focuses quickly, tracks focus accurately and provides subject isolation like no other lens. For product, portrait, or 'wildlife' photography, the 200 f/2 is incredibly sharp, agile, and renders 'bokeh' like few other lenses. Coupled with a TC14 or TC17, it provides decent reach while still operating with a large aperture.

Have only used this lens a few times and am astounded at its sharpness. Have used with a tripod. It is a bit heavy with a D300 and battery grip. Works well with the 1.4 teleconverter. Very glad that I bit the bullet and bought it - first class build and optics shine on this.

OMG!!! Incredible. Thought my 300mm was good. This lens laps it. No focus searching with this glass. Your 'dead on' instantly. Period. Produces clear/crisp images. Using it for sports and portraits. Capturing good night sports images at is no longer a problem, especially football. Also, the admiration from seasoned pro's is fun.

However its not a little heavy. Its alot heavy! Need a monopod, bad.

OK so it's big and heavy, but the speed, build and output of this lens is worthy. If you are willing to carry and support some serious glass you'll get amazing results from this lens. Big bokah. Super sharp focus. It's a hassle to deal with the hood and storage, plus you can't even put a protective filter on the lens (too big). I'm totally into it and frequently leave other lenses in the bag. A truly great prime from Nikon. Did I mention that it's big and heavy?

Never imagined my 70-200 f/2.8 VR would ever be relegated to the status of back-up lens but that's what happened when I got my hands on this 200 f/2. Worth every penny! Works very well with Nikon teleconverters. It's heavy but not so heavy that it can't be hand-held.

Sharp, sharp with beautiful rendering of out of focus area. Best portrait lens period. If you can afford it get it.

                    Comments about Nikon AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens:

This lens has been the workhorse for me for sports and indoor performances without a flash. I currently use it on the D700 and D3. In most cases for theater I use the 50/1.4(on 1.6 or 1.8) and the 200/2.0 wide open with the D3 or D700 on 3200 or 6400 and get incredibly sharp images. The lens also tracks very well for dragging the shutter/pan shots of cyclists. For examples, take a look at vigorotaku.com under Nation's Triathlon to see what I mean.

Just the perfect lens for portrait (bokeh, sharpness and colors). And if you don't do fitness, it helps you to keep fit because of its huge weight. I think you the minimum DSLR to go with is a D3(S) or D3X.

Great all around lens. We took it to the mountains and got photos of the kids skiing and playing in the snow. The quality was amazing. Its expensive but well worth the money. I will be adding a TCE 20 teleconvertor to get 400mm f4.

                        Comments about Nikon AF-S VR NIKKOR 200mm f/2.0 G AF-S IF-ED Lens:

It is funny...photography even after 35 years is still a passionate thing. You find yourself, mid-workflow, pausing to admire a shot that just got everything right...this is a feeling I have known since my first print appeared in the tray as a kid. It is why we do what we do, it is the sweet treat amid the noise of all the thousands of shots that were good, salable, but imminently forgettable.

What I am telling you is this lens delivers a lot more of those moments to you. This thing just kills, period. Sharpness, contrast and saturation like 3D, bokeh of all lenses should be defined by this one...fast and quiet AF, has a memory recall setting, superb VR, internal filters, and a really great case. It can focus in nearly total darkness, I am not kidding.

It is big and thick and heavy, and not something you can handhold for long, and I am a big guy with large hands. All of 10 lbs+ with the body, so at least a monopod is needed, I added a big RRS plate to the tripod foot for greater stability.

Anyway I had rented this a few times, experienced more workflow pauses admiring the results, and found myself jonesing for these results on other shoots. Wide open, shooting a face full frame, the difference between the liquid crystal clear eyes and the bokeh melted and so even and smooth near the nape of the neck, hair and shoulders is wonderful... definitely a money shot.

I honestly have gotten more client comments on the drama and impact of the images this amazing lense delivers than in any other single piece of gear I have owned in 35 years. It is not cheap, and Nikon does not make many of them, so they are tough to get... just rent one, and you will find yourself lining up to buy one before you know it.

Great lens for indoor and out. It also looks cool on the D3. I call it the Fatboy. Some may call me a Fanboy, but the low stock of this lens can speak for itself. I always see Canon's 200mm F2 in stock even though it's cheaper with the rebate. Cloudsrester can't rest now.
