    American Audio/DJ Headshell...A Must!

I've been in the DJ business for 44 years. I've also been an audiophile for the same amount of time. I have written over 300 reviews for Epinions. I have tried, tested and reported on numerous headshells over the many years.Firstly...make no mistake...this is a high quality headshell at a tremendous price. It certainly is NOT "junk" by any stretch of the imagination and the fact that the rubber washer is twice the thickness of others poses no problem whatsoever. If you align your selected cartridge properly with the Technics Overhang Gauge...you will not encounter any misalignment as the gauge takes into consideration the washer's thickness. That is...if you're doing it right!I've not experienced any difficulty with Rake Angle {side-to-side} either because of this headshell. I did experience one instance where my Stanton 500 was leaning toward the left but that was due to the fact that the Stantons use welded metal cart wings which can distort or bend when too much pressure is applied during mounting. Slightly bending the cart in the opposite direction cured that.I have three of these half inch standard mount American DJ headshells which I use in heavy rotation with Numark Groove Tools and Stanton 500's. They work extremely well...especially with the Numarks which have slotted mounting holes. The American DJ is one of my two favorite headshells to use for my GLI SL-2500 Professional Direct Drive Turntable. The other is the Save Vinyl Audiophile headshell at twice the price. Since no headshell is included with the SL-2500...you'll find out very quickly that this is the right option for you in headshells.Remember...the SL-2500 is precisely the same as the classic Stanton NT-2500 and American DJ TT-2500 Mk. II. These highly successful classics were/are Technics SL-1200 knockoffs minus the higher torque motor and tonearm height adjustment. The S-shaped tonearm otherwise is precisely the same warranting use of the Technics Overhang Gauge alignment tool. The low mass Numark Groove Tool mates extremely well with this medium mass headshell. The combo has a great "feel". I ordered two of these headshells recently from B&H for a total of $ bucks with free super saver shipping with tracking number and received them promptly within two days! Bravo, B&H! I now plan to order more for my audiophile cartridges...Clear Audio Concept MM & Shure M97xE and may mount my old Ortofon OM5e & Omega in these. One thing that sets the American Audio Headshell apart from most other Technics types is the fact that there are clear sleeves placed over the leads at the contact pins area of the headshell. The cartridge end uses standard sleeveless nickel plated clips which are just absolutely fine. My Save Vinyl Audio headshells use gold-plated ones just as a little side note. Both work wonderfully as long as you don't constantly change cartridges in the beasts. For that situation you should just order plenty of these babies...money well spent. Make no mistake though...The American Audio Headshell is a true bargain in High End Audio! It is capable of highly dimensional pure sound quality. Remember...no two turntables, tonearms, cartridges or headshells sound precisely alike. Each design renders a slightly different sound...good or bad. This is a great one for your s-shaped Technics tonearm. Pioneer PL-518 owners please remember that youe s-shaped arms are slightly different from the Technics and you should use your own gauge for alignment. Enjoy the music the way it was meant to be heard...on VINYL!!!...PJS-II

Bought two of these for my Technics. I was initially impressed by the smooth finish and seemingly quality build, that is until I discovered that the pins on both examples were visibly canted the the right, seriously throwing off azimuth.

But that's not the only problem: The black rubber washer at the rear of the assembly is noticeably thicker than original Technics spec, thus making it impossible to set overhand correctly by using the white plastic Technics gauge manufactured for this purpose. My advise is to avoid this junk and stick with a major brand.

        Comments about American Audio TT-Headshell:

Initially I was very apprehensive in purchasing this item based on some of the written reviews I read. I took a chance of purchasing one to try it out. Boy, was I in for a big surprise. It went beyond my expectation. Its quality is excellent and its performance is comparable to tone arms headshells that sell for more. I was so impressed I plan on buying additional one for my other five cartridges.

          Comments about American Audio TT-Headshell:

I ordered a cartridge and needed an extra headshell and this popped up on the website. Not a bad choice.
The things I like about this headshell are first; the price. Very moderately priced. Second; this appears to be a die cast piece and it is very rigid, not just stamped metal. Third; there is a lift tab cast into the piece. It's always handy to have a good place to lift the cartrige off the record. Fourth; the mounting surface of the headshell has no overhang, no lip, like you would have on most stamped metal headshells. What this means is that when you are trying to position your cartridge and get the point of the stylus 52mm from the gasket on the on the tonearm connection side of the headshell, there is no lip to stop you from moving the cartridge far enough forward to get the optimum placement.
I did not really find any negatives with this headshell.

          Comments about American Audio TT-Headshell:

You can't go wrong with this Technics clone. Its built well, tad bit heavier than a Technics and lines up well in the collet of S-Shaped tonearms. It even comes with nifty plastic sleeves over the connectors to help further prevent oxidation. Nice touch and well done! And at what its priced at, order two or three like I did.

Got this for a technix SL2000 that I bought at a garage sale. It installed easily. I was concerned about the large amount of lift the tonearm had without a headshell (or cartridge), but this did the trick just fine, very sturdy and it'll probably hold up forever.
