I looked into a LOT of HDD enclosure cases with the FW 800 port after I got an iMac to hook with an extra HDD I had from the previous Mac.
Installation was very straight forward, just a couple of screws which come with, no fans, means quiet, well built piece, this is.
I also like this because it has 2 (TWO) Firewire 800 ports in the back so I can "daisy chain" Macbook Pro (or HDD) to transfer movie files which I have to do quite occasionally.
I like my stuff to be set-it-up-and-forget-it, it turns on/off itself with the iMac. I LOVE it.
If there is one thing, that I would fix about this, is the power switch light. It's bright and blue, only wish it was cool white and dimmer.
Bottom line: if you like the Firewire 800 (AKA:1394b) speed, don't go cheap, this is well worth the money.

I bought it to boot Mac OS X on my aged MacBook Pro. Unfortunately, it is not possible from either FireWire 800 or 400. It boots perfectly from USB but USB is way too slow compared to FireWire 800. After a little research I found that the previous model (G-S350SUA) that looks the same but only have FireWire 400 has the same problem. If McAlly cannot fix it they must at least state it in the product specifications.

I've only had this thing for a few weeks but I already like it very much. I was getting tired of the annoying open HDD docks- they always stopped working after a short while. I'm hoping this will last longer- it seems very sturdy and the hard drive doesn't wobble around at all.

Comments about Macally G-S350SUAB2 Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB 2.0 Storage Enclosure:
The enclosure works as it should for my purposes of backing up and swapping out backup drives. I'm glad to know that it cannot boot from Firewire.
The one con I've found deals with the power cable. The power cable needs to be plugged into the unit prior to being plugged into an AC source. If done in reverse (plugging in a hot power cable) the current arcs from the cable tip to the enclosure and sparks do fly. A bit disconcerting.

Comments about Macally G-S350SUAB2 Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB 2.0 Storage Enclosure:
I've been using Macally products with my Macs for many, many years and have come to trust the brand completely. This external hard drive enclosure certainly does its job well ... except for one thing: it can't be used as an external Boot-Up drive!
After repeated but failed attempts at trying to use this enclosure and a trusted hard drive to boot up my Mac Mini, I called Macally technical support and found out that there's an embedded glitch in this model's chip set that cannot be defeated. It appears that the latest firmware for this Firewire 800 device bypasses the boot-up function ... an obvious error on the part of Macally's tech people.
If you're using this enclosure strictly for external storage, then it's excellent in every way; build, capacity, speed, versatility, etc. But if your hard drive includes your system software/operating system and you're intending to use it to start up your machine ... well, you'll need to look elsewhere. What a shame.

Comments about Macally G-S350SUAB2 Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB 2.0 Storage Enclosure:
I had to deal with a SATA II hard drive enclosed to an external bay in USB2 that would dismount on my new imac each time an USB key is plugged. A problem with the external enclosure for sure, so I couldn't afford loosing more time and choose this Firewire 800 enclosure that I received less than 8 days after ordering ... in Tahiti ! I'm very happy with the purchase, I don't have the problem anymore and file transfer is really quick. Very nice built product, great look and style fit with the imac. Very easy to assemble the hardrive also.

Houses 1TB 7200 WD Black with photo raw files. Delivers data quickly to 2009 iMac with FW800. I thought it would be a step down from my previous eSATA connection to PC but the Mac/FW800 combo with this enclosure is pretty fast. Metal body complements iMac look and keeps disk running cool. I like the quad interface for future flexibility. Easy as pie to hook this up with the Mac.

Comments about Macally G-S350SUAB2 Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB 2.0 Storage Enclosure:
Seemed to be one of the few HD enclosures with firewire800 and a daisy chain. Hilariously, I went to plug it in, and noticed I only have (1) firewire800 port in my imac, and it's being used by a soundcard interface, and my buddy says since I'm only using it for samples that 2.0 usb is fine. Oy. Coulda saved $40. However, sleek design, aluminum and airholes are great. Enjoy.

Comments about Macally G-S350SUAB2 Hi-Speed eSATA/FireWire/USB 2.0 Storage Enclosure:
Has Firewire 800 that my previous Macally enclosure didn't have (which choked Pro Tools on occasion). Firewire 800 is very fast, and even as USB3 and Thunderbolt are on the horizon, I will likely continue to use this enclosure (with 7200 RPM drives) alongside newer technologies.
As with any other enclosure, this one requires some effort to install the drive using one or two screwdrivers. Other than that, it's fairly straightforward: turn on the drive and get to work!
One of the best (among the few) 3.5" SATA enclosures that has so many ports.

I bought this as a replacement for my 750 Gig external drive that has given me problems since I bought it. The old enclosure would prevent full boot of computer until I disconnected it and eventually quit working all together.
I removed the drive from the old enclosure and easily installed it in this one. Once I plugged it in it worked flawlessly. No problems with restarts anymore. A bonus is that it is much quieter than the old enclosure.
Since I am using this hard drive as the primary backup for my computer, I am thrilled that it is now working as it should.

This is the 2nd one I'm buying. Being that they are the only things that sit on my desk looking pretty is a big concern. I only use them for backup so they dont get a lot of use though.
