Panasonic's AG-AF100 Micro Four Thirds Professional HD Camcorder represents an enormous leap forward in affordable, cinema-quality video imaging. Providing all the professional features that videographers expect in an interchangeable-lens camcorder--manual video and audio control, variable frame rates, HD-SDI and HDMI output, XLR inputs, timecode--the AG-AF100 plays its trump card with a large, 4/3-type image sensor. At 13 times the size of comparably priced 1/3" sensors (and almost 4 times larger than the 2/3" chips found in cameras costing more than twice as much), the AG-AF100's sensor brings the richness of DSLR video into a professional form factor.

Until now, if you wanted a camera that could shoot video with the deep colors, enhanced light sensitivity, and shallow depth-of-field achievable with large-sensor imaging, you had one of two options: an ungainly DSLR kitted out with any number of expensive support accessories, or access to a large bank account. The AG-AF100 not only delivers the image quality, versatility, and control that professional shooters have been clamoring for, but at a price well within most pro-level budgets.

No doubt about it: the large-sensor, interchangeable lens camcorder has finally arrived.

World's First to Adopt Micro Four Thirds
The AG-AF100 series is the first professional HD camera recorder to adopt the Micro Four Thirds standards. These standards were announced in 2008 as an extension of the Four Thirds standards for DSLR (Digital Single Lens Reflex) cameras. Panasonic and some other manufactures have already released a number of digital cameras and interchangeable lenses based on the Micro Fourth Thirds standards.

The "Four Thirds" name is derived from the 4/3-type (approx. 17.3mm x 13mm) image sensor. The size of the image sensor, the standardized lens mount developed for it, and interchangeable lenses designed exclusively for digital cameras form the core of the Four Thirds standards. These standards were established to offer an optimal solution for digital cameras, breaking loose the confines of film camera standards. In establishing the Micro Four Thirds standards, the flange back distance (the distance from the lens mount surface to the image sensor) was reduced by about half and the mount diameter was made about 6 mm (0.24 inches) smaller than that of the Four Thirds mount. The image sensor size is the same as that of the 4/3 type used in the Four Thirds standard. The Micro Four Thirds standards have made it possible to reduce the size and weight of cameras and lenses, and to achieve greater interchangeability of lenses together with video recording capability.
4/3-type MOS Image Sensor
The 4/3-type MOS image sensor in the AG-AF100 series has about the same imaging area* as that of 35mm cinema film. The depth of field and the focal range are also close to those of film cameras. With the AG-AF100 series, you can record beautiful, shallow depth of field, film-like images. The MOS sensor has two control lines as compared to the three lines required by a conventional CMOS sensor, thus providing a larger light receiving area. This has achieved a high level of sensitivity rivaling that of a CCD sensor. Extensive noise reduction measures are also employed, such as embedded photodiodes isolated from noise sources and low-voltage operation. By guiding more light to the pixels, the AG-AF100 series achieves a wide dynamic range and detailed gradation with minimal blocked shadows or blown highlights in high-contrast scenes, for true-to-life textures and rich colors.

*The effective imaging area is trimmed to a 16:9 aspect ratio.
A Low-Pass Filter for High-Quality HD Motion Images
The AG-AF100 series' optical low-pass filter is optimized for HD motion images and reduces the aliasing noise that often occurs in motion images captured by an image sensor with a high pixel density. In addition, the MOS image sensor is scanned at a high speed in order to minimize skew distortion.
High-Performance 18-bit DSP
The AG-AF100 series is equipped with a high-performance 18-bit digital signal processor (DSP) for image processing. Optimized for HD video recording, the DSP handles various image rendering processes, such as dynamic range stretch (DRS), gamma, 12-axis independent color correction and detail enhancement, as well as conversion to HD/SD video formats−-all with exceptional precision and high image quality.
Internal Optical ND Filter
The AG-AF100 series has an internal neutral density (ND) filter that is essential for video recording. The dedicated dial on the camera body lets you adjust the setting in three steps (1/4ND, 1/16ND, and 1/64ND) with any type of lenses.
Dynamic Range Stretch Function
DRS recognizes the average brightness of highlight and shadow areas and then automatically adjusts the aperture and uses knee control to suppress blocking in the shadow areas. In scenes with mixed dark and light areas, DRS automatically provides a wider dynamic range with minimal blown highlights and blocked shadows.
7-Mode Gamma for Richer Gradation
Drawing on technologies developed for the VariCam, Panasonic has equipped the AG-AF100 series with advanced gamma functions that address seven different shooting scenarios and enhance your creative abilities. This includes tow cine-like gammas, which produce the characteristic warm tones of film recordings. Other gamma settings include HD Norm, Low, SD Norm, High, and B.Press.
Advanced Image Adjustments
  • Color setting with matrix table: Norm 1, Norm 2, Fluo and Cine-Like.
  • Adjustable H detail level, V detail level, detail coring and skin detail.
  • Adjustable chroma level, chroma phase and master pedestal.
  • Adjustable color temp: 2400K to 9900K (preset 3200K/5600K).
  • Knee point settings: Auto, Low, Mid and High.
  • Adjustable auto-iris level.
AVCHD PH Mode for Professional Applications
The AG-AF100 series uses the AVCHD recording format and also supports the high image quality PH mode. AVCHD complies with MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 High Profile, the latest motion picture compression technology. Boasting a compression efficiency that is more than twice that of the MPEG-2 system (such as HDV), this advanced video file format delivers superb image quality and low data rates. The PH mode was developed for AVCCAM by Panasonic exclusively for high-quality professional video production. This mode boasts a maximum AVCHD bit rate of 24 Mbps (average: 21 Mbps) and records 1920 x 1080 full-HD images.
Uncompressed LPCM 2-Channel Recording
The PH mode supports uncompressed 16-bit LPCM 2-channel digital audio recording for high-quality sound in addition to Dolby Digital 2-channel audio. The HA/HE mode employs Dolby Digital 2-channel audio recording only.
Multi HD Format Compatibility
The AVCHD PH mode is compatible with multiple HD formats, such as 1080/60i, 1080/30p, 1080/24p and 720/60p. Additionally, the AG-AF100 series lets you select 60Hz or 50Hz to support HD systems used around the world. (Actual recording is as follows: 60 Hz = 59.94 Hz, 30 Hz = 29.97 Hz, and 24 Hz = 23.98 Hz.)
1080p Variable Frame Rate Recording
The AG-AF100 series has inherited and further advanced the acclaimed functions of the VariCam, which is widely used in producing movies, TV programs and TV commercials. The new Variable Frame Rate (VFR) function* supports full-HD (1920 x 1080) progressive mode. Armed with a 20-step undercrank (lower frame rate)/overcrank (higher frame rate) function, the AG-AF100 series is capable of producing cinematic images such as a 1/2.5x slow-motion effect and 2x fast motion effect when played in 24p mode.

*Cannot be played in 1080/60p mode. 720p VFR not supported. Class 6 or higher SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card is required for VFR recording.
SDXC Memory Card Supported
The AG-AF100 series supports the new SDXC Memory Card. The SDXC Memory Card is a next generation large-capacity data storage device with upgraded versions of the file system (FAT) and physical specifications of the SDHC Memory Card. Thanks to a large storage capacity, which exceeds the 32 GB limit of the SDHC Memory Card, the SDXC Memory Card can handle large data volumes of 48 GB or 64 GB. It also boasts a high maximum data transfer speed of 22 MB/s* and a wide operating temperature range of -25° to 85°C (-13°F to 185°F). The AG-AF100 series can also use the SDHC and SD Memory Cards.

*The data transfer speed varies depending on the operating system of the SD-compatible devices. The indicated rate was measured at a maximum specification point specified by Panasonic.
Two Card Slots for Relay Recording
The AG-AF100 has two memory card slots. The active slot for recording can be switched, and the internal relay recording function enables continuous recording by automatically changing the recording card media. By using two SDXC Memory Cards, the AG-AF100 can record up to 12 hours in PH mode or 48 hours in HE mode*. Video clips can be copied between cards mounted in the two slots.

*The maximum continuous recording time is 12 hours regardless of the recording mode. A Class 4 or higher SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card is required for recording in PH or HA mode. For other recording modes, use a Class 2 or higher SDXC/SDHC/SD Memory Card. (The use of a Panasonic SDXC Memory Card is recommended.)
SMPTE Timecode Recording & Synchro Function
The built-in SMPTE timecode generator lets you select the Drop Frame/Non-Drop Frame and Free Run/Rec Run modes and preset. User bits are also provided. Connecting two cameras with a TC preset in/out (video out) connector allows the slave camera, to synchronize with the master camera. 1
Still Image Capture (Still Picture)
A frame can be captured from HD video as a still image equivalent to two megapixels (1920 x 1080). (Note that still images cannot be captured during motion image recording or in Pre-rec mode.)
Camera Metadata Recording
Camera settings for recording operation can be saved as metadata in a clip file. By loading a clip file, the saved settings can be immediately applied.
Diverse Recording Functions
Various other recording functions of the AF100 include Clip Thumbnail Display, Interval Rec, Pre-Rec, Shot Mark, Index, Rec Check, and Last Clip Delete.
FILM CAM Mode for Movie Production
The AG-AF100 series features switchable FILM CAM and VIDEO CAM modes. In FILM CAM mode, the variable frame rate can be used. In addition, the synchro scan and shutter can be indicated and set with the opening angle, instead of seconds, while the sensitivity can be indicated and set in ISO, instead of dB. This makes operation easier for users who are familiar with film camera operation.
Area Focusing and Area Iris Functions (Compatible Lens Only)
Using the newly provided 1,2260,000 function knob (cursor key), you can select a desired area in the frame and set it as a target zone for focusing, iris adjustment and YGET (brightness measurement). This new function facilitates the recording of images in which the subject is not in the center of the frame. In addition to the above three modes, there are two other modes: simultaneous focusing/iris adjustment and simultaneous focusing/YGET. You can select and set any of these five modes.
Focus Assist Function
The AG-AF100 series is equipped with an HD focus assist function. The focus bar indicates the focus level and the focus-in-red display shows the focus area. These two display functions help you to focus more smoothly. A face detection function is also provided, and area auto focus and area auto iris are possible.
Wide ISO Sensitivity (Gain) Setting Range
The sensitivity can be set between ISO 200 and ISO 3200 (in FILM CAM mode), or the gain can be adjusted between 18 dB and -6 dB (in VIDEO CAM mode). The 3-position (L, M, H) gain switch can be assigned with three desired settings for quick switching. The negative gain (-3 dB, -6 dB) is effective for reducing sensitivity and reducing noise.
Slow/Synchro/High-speed Shutter
The shutter speed can be set from a slow 1/2 sec to a fast 1/2000 sec in VIDEO CAM mode. The AG-AF100 series is also equipped with a synchro scan function to allow setting from 10° to 360° in 0.5° steps (including 172.8°) in FILM CAM mode. When combined with the variable frame rate, this function enables detailed settings for a blurred or time-lapse effect.
Simplified Waveform & Vectorscope Display
The AG-AF100 series has waveform and vectorscope display functions as well. A single touch of the WFM key displays the waveform or vectors of the captured video signal on the LCD monitor.
Large Viewfinder and LCD Monitor
The large, high-quality 0.45" viewfinder, approx. 1,226,000-dot equivalent (852 x 480 x 3 [RGB]) can be tilted up to a 90° angle. The variable angle color monitor features a 3.45" color LCD panel, approx. 921,000 dots (1920 x 480) with an aspect ratio of 16:9, and facilitates low-angle/high-angle shooting, viewing and menu setting.
Three User Buttons
Three user buttons are provided for one-touch operation of frequently used functions. Two buttons are located on the control panel, and one button is placed at the upper part of the grip handle. Each button can be assigned with any of the following 14 functions: INH, REC CHECK, FACE DETECT, FOCUS ASSIST, CAPTURE, ATW, ATW Lock, SHOT MARK, INDEX, LAST CLIP, BACKLIGHT, SPOTLIGHT, BLACK FADE, WHITE FADE.

Lots of previous reviews cover the pros & cons of the AF100. After months of devouring "AF100 Test Footage" on Vimeo and YouTube, I was worried I might be disappointed; however the camera exceeded my expectations. The picture quality is amazing, the 1080/24p has a beautiful cinema look. Color representation is outstanding; vibrant colors, deep rich blacks. And then there's the ability to utilize the shallow depth-of-field. Sound quality is underrated on the AF100 and having balanced XLR inputs with phantom power is HUGE. The AF100's on-board mic, while not very directional, is impressive, picking up clear sound from quite a distance. Post workflow using the AVCHD on-camera files is a breeze, simple Log & Transfer through FCP 7 and I was editing a couple of hours worth of footage in less than an hour. Much has been made about the low bit rate, although I haven't seen anything I've shot yet that suffered from the low bit rate, even on my 65" plasma. Granted, I have not tried chroma keying or any serious color correction...

Which is a con of the camera. If you expect to shoot a lot of fast motion, effects shots, green screen; or are shooting for broadcast or to go back to film, the low bit rate won't cut it. Luckily, if you are doing anything that intensive, you'll likely be adding an external recorder like the Ki Pro Mini, NanoFlash or Ninja/Samurai. Also, after a month, I'm finding the viewfinder eyepiece placement is horrible, useless when trying to use a shoulder-mount, meaning you'll end up adding another EVF, as well. Last major issue is not having any kind of automatic zoom control, finding zooming with the Lumix lenses can be very clunky.

One aspect of the AF100 that does not seem to get a lot of credit is the professional functionality of the camera. I work in a broadcast HD television environment, so I brought my AF100 in to go over with my camera operators and video engineers, all of whom were impressed, especially by the inclusion of most of the professional handles they would expect to find on our expensive studio or ENG cameras. One of my video engineers began with a, "isn't that cute" attitude, but as he kept pointing out, "see, on a professional camera, you'd have _______," and I was able to show him where the AF100 had it, he was more and more impressed. Having multi-step selectable Zebras, selectable (24/30p) HD-SDI out, timecode options and all of the master ped, knee, gamma, H&V detail and chroma adjustments available on our studios MCPs wowed him. By the time I showed him the Waveform/Vector, he was sold. Another video engineer friend was interested in the AF100 for a possible secondary/hand-held camera for a top-rated sitcom and, after getting some time with my AF100, he's convinced it can hold its own in any environment - broadcast, digital projection or even back to film.

All of the professional functionality of the AF100 does come with one warning - be ready to learn. Unless you are used to working with fully professional HD cameras, you'll need to spend a little time learning all the ins-and-outs. You'll also need to spend some time on photography/cinematography, if you are used to running in full autos on typical video cameras. The AF100 requires constant attention to the white/black balances, as well as focus, but the ability to create beautiful imagery with all that manual control makes the AF100 a true winner!

The Panasonic AG-AF100 has lots of positives:

Its human engineering is excellent. The camera is small and comfortable to hand-hold. it has all the controls and features you expect in a pro video camera. It has HDSDI/SDI output in addition to the usual HDMI output. It permits control of depth of field and also macro videography. It provides access to the fine Panasonic Micro Four-Thirds lenses. Although the camera is predominantly made of plastic, it still has a nice solid feel. The workflow is seamless, fast and efficient.

The quality in all respects is VASTLY superior to the (perfectly horrible) Sony NEX-VG10. The AG-AF100 has largely eliminated the moire problems that make the VG10 almost useless.

The patient is healthy ... except for the cancer.

Thanks to its consumer-grade 25 mb/s CODEC, The attainable image quality, as viewed on a Sony critical evaluation monitor (a BVM-L231), is visibly inferior to all of the following cameras:

    Canon 5D Mark II (39 mb/s)
    Sony PMW-EX1R (35 mb/s)
    Sony PMW-EX3 (35 mb/s)
    Canon XF305 (50 mb/s)

Of course, none of the above comes close to my Sony HDW-F900R with its 100 mb/s bit rate.

In short, the camera is impressive in every way except for the video it produces. That's no small problem. It may be that use of an external recorder attached to the HDSDI spigot would help materially. But why bother when there are cameras that do a great job without an external kludge for recording?

This long-awaited camera was a disappointment. I *may* put mine up for sale soon.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AF100 Professional Memory Card Camcorder:

Being a Panasonic user i was excited when this camera came out. It took me a while to finally make the purchase while comparing other similar options. The main thing that attracted this to me was familiar funtion, versitility and price. So after my reasearch there are other cameras that may take a little bit better quality video but you will have to spend at least double the price of the AF100. And i havent been dissapointed with the finished product yet. The camera is very adjustible to change settings to get a look you will be happy with. A good versitile option for someone wanting to go for the DSLR look and still have better audio and more of a video camera functions. THere are also a lot of lens adapters so you wont have to do a brand overhall of lenses to use this camera.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AF100 Professional Memory Card Camcorder:

I teach video production at a local university, and I have to say this camera exceeds my expectations. Properly set up, this camera can produce high-quality professional work rivaling that of $10,000 cameras. With the ability to use almost any photo and cinema lenses, this camera can be a complex but powerful motion picture tool. In some respects, this camera is less forgiving then others, but if you work with this camera and learn its quirks it can provide an amazing look.

I rented this unit before I bought it and was hooked. If your looking for a DSLR film look, but don't want all the restrictions of a DSLR, this camera is the one to get. I would recommend that you buy the EF or EOS adapter and a good lens to achieve a good DSLR look. I also bought the panasonic Lumix G Vario HD 14-140mm lens and it looks very sharp and is a nice lens, but not necessarily the image you'd get from a DSLR. I will say that the Lumix is great because it allow for automatic focus, iris control, et, whereas the EOS to 4/3 adapter doesn't allow for electronic control on the lens unless you get an active adapter like the one offered by RedrockMicro.

People here are complaining about the internal codec being poor, well for 300 bucks you can grab yourself a blackmagic hyper deck shuttle and record uncompressed 422 from the SDI, so please if you want to go for this camera but are worried about the codec, don't be, grab a atomos or blackmagic! then broadcasters will accept your footage! but honestly if like me your only delivering to youtube 24mb/s is plenty.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AF100 Professional Memory Card Camcorder:

I work for a medical practice and this camera is used for patient testimonials, lectures, instructional videos, depositions and commercials. For the price, this camera is outstanding. I choose this camera over a DSLR because I am a videographor and the AF100 operates like a camcorder and not a still camera. I did not have the time to buy a DSLR and attempt to trick it out to function like a video camera. The AG100 features pro audio connections, a nice, pivoting LCD, film and video camera functionality, interchangable micro 4/3 lenses and the AVCHD codec (which is fine for me). It also features a HDSDI output if you choose to work at higher resolution. On the negative side, this is NOT a ENG camera! The available micro 4/3 lenses that are available for this camera, which allow for auto focus and auto iris are very slow and not that great. This is a film style camera and works best in that type of production environment. Also, be aware that Canon and Nikon glass do not "talk to" this camera. That is fine if you don't plan on using auto focus but makes it a major pain to adjust aperature. Beyond that, it is a very nice camera and I would recomend it to anyone looking for a DSLR with camcorder functionality.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AF100 Professional Memory Card Camcorder:

Nice camera for the price, but I've had three networks say that the 25mbps isn't good enough for them. So, this is an industrial production camera only unless you use an external recording device like a nano flash. Too bad... If Panasonic upped the codec to broadcast specs, this camera would own a big share of the market since there's not a solid choice for the doc/reality market right now. The other large chip cameras all have big drawbacks too (plus they have bigger price tags.)

Long-time user of Panasonic cameras, lured into the hotness of big sensors by Canon DSLR's that shot video. As such, being able to use my collection of Canon glass (with the Redrock Micro LiveLens MFT) was a huge incentive.I suspect this audience targets people who love the look of DSLR's but hate the compromises they involve. The AF100 generally satisfies many of those shortcomings because it is, in fact, a bona fide video camera. That means XLR audio, headphone, waveform/vectorscope, zebras, and a surprisingly good form factor. The Micro Four Thirds system is nice, I suppose, but I find that the only lens I really needed outside of my Canon collection was the goofy looking Lumix 20mm f/1.7. I already have long and short zooms in fancy L glass, plus the 50mm f/1.4 which is the big surprise of the bunch. That lens looks great on this camera.Image quality is outstanding, for the most part, though you can expect a little bit of noise in the shadows, in part because of the AVCHD compression. With an SDI output, I suppose this is easily overcome with an external recorder.Overall, I'm really happy with the camera, particularly given its inexpensive price point.

I am shocked by the positive reviews this camera has received. I'm curious to what those reviewers have used in the past, it is how I weigh this camera. The build quality immediately is shockingly inferior to anything I have used in the past. Buttons are huge with text that makes it look like it is a child's toy. The quality of the LCD is horrific, it is flimsy and compared to anything else is absolutely not professional. As soon as you open the LCD from the body it feels flimsy and could break off if you are not careful. How does it shoot? Well we have seen a lot of noise, even in well lit environments especially in the blacks. The image overall looks muddled when compared to our Sony EX3. I'm sad to say this is not a camera I can recommend. I would strongly suggest anyone thinking about this particular camera to see it before purchasing.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AF100 Professional Memory Card Camcorder:

Let me first start off by saying: This camera is ONLY [$]!!!That's pretty important. Yes, it's not as awesome as an Alexa, or have the frame rates of a Phantom Flex, or the 4k of a Red Epic. Then again, I don't believe any of those cameras start for under $60,000. That's an extra 0 in there. Why do I bother mentioning this obvious fact? Because many people don't get that. They want this to be something it's not. What it IS is awesome. I worked with the 7D and 5D for the past 2 years while waiting for Canon to step up their game. Instead, they came out with a $16k over price camera that is nothing I need. I needed PROPER audio. None of this recording to a Zoom H4n with a bad pre-amp and 14k hum. No longer do I have to have a monitor for critical focus, lum values, zebras etc. I get all that in one complete package. Like a real camera. This is a real camera. It's a camcorder with a giant sensor. Yeah, it's no FF35. But who needs that for corporate work? For interviews? Commercials? Possible run and gun? What I do with this: everything.I shoot interviews; some locked down others run and gun style. I shoot corporate training videos, seminars, commercials and even indie films. Some of these you'll want an external recorder for. I's annoying, but it takes the footage to a new level. Not much of a level, but better color grading and meeting broadcast requirements.Overall:Great camera. Proper Audio. Zebras. HDMI, SDI out. Time lock. NO MOIRE!!! Well, much less moire. It's not perfect, but it blows my 7D out of the water.Cons:No focus magnification. The DSLR's had this and it's great. Yes, you can use Peaking but it's not for critical focus on my Zeiss primes. 1:1 or 2:1 pixel mapping would be amazing. Preferably up to 5:1. I understand this may be a limitation to the fact the sensor only has the right amount of pixels.Codec limitations. It's a beautiful codec don't get me wrong. It looks amazing. But, for the sake of being picky it'd be nice to have 4:2:2 and a option between Mbps rates. Say, 25, 35, and 50 (broadcast minimum.) I know I can do this on an external, but it'd be nice to do on camera. SD cards are fast enough to handle 50Mbps so why not?CANON MOUNT! Or better selection of M43 lenses. I'd love to see a 14-140 4.0 or 2.8 lens. I don't care if it costs 2k or weighs a small truck. Otherwise I'm using a Canon ENG lens. Ain't perfect, but it works.Better viewfinder. The EVF for the GX1 is nice. Make it something more like that, but bigger. Or remove it all together and make it an detachable. Think DP4 or similar view finders. Or move it to the front and give us a faux shoulder pad like the EX3 and the XL series.

I am looking video camera but with dslr image quality under $7K, and then I got panasonic hpx200, jvc hm700, sony fs100 and this camera. Hpx200 have good image, but cannot change the lens and also must buy expensive p2 card. jvc hm700 great over shoulder camera with native quicktime mov format, so easy to edit but small sensor with 1/3 ccd. sony fs100 is the best camera with large sensor (super 35mm), but the camera body not conform to use (small button, bad handling, the body from plastic! NO ND Filter), and it only have one screw handle. Finally I found AG AF100 and I raw ag af100 footage from youtube. That it! Video camera with dslr quality, cheap memory, strong body, have xlr audio connection, and have ND filter.

This camera captures an excellent image! The dynamic range is comparable to the Sony version. However, the only draw back I noticed from an editorial stand point, is that the camera's media format only allows for clip size around ~4GB. This means that (for simple math) if you were to record 10 minutes, the camera would break it up into two 5 minute clips. Which doesn't sound like an issue, unless you are working on a multi-cam edit and you need to sync cameras.

Another issue I noticed, again from an editorial stand point as I was not the shooter, is that when the operator zoomed all the way out, I noticed a frame jitter on the edges. Again, not sure if this was operator error or camera.

Either way, I would buy this camera for sure!

Comments about Panasonic AG-AF100 Professional Memory Card Camcorder:

I use this as a low-cost manual cinema camera, and so far it's working out really well. The chip yields a pretty pristine image even in very low light, and there are tons of parameters you can control. I use this with Nikon primes (and a few zooms) with a $25 f-mount adapter, and I control the aperture manually either from the lens or via the adapter for g-series lenses. Recording onto SD cards gives good results, but the HD-Sdi out makes hi-quality recording onto a Hyperdeck Shuttle or other recorder a breeze and the quality is fantastic. My faster Nikons give great DOF options, but for keeping focus a proper hi-res monitor is necessary. A good follow focus helps too. There are limited options for auto-focus lenses as of now, and there isn't even a zoom rocker on the camera, so no zoom control I guess. Maybe with a Varizoom remote? In all, this camera seems to be aimed more at filmmakers, so the manual controls are really useful. With a proper rig and the right lighting you can make beautiful images with this camera.

Use this in my video production company. It is an excellent camera and we used it first time this past weekend. Flexibility of the use of an existing set of lens I owned with an adapter. Those look for "film look" will not be disappointed. I still use standard video cameras for "run and gun" but this camera will no doubt be in much demand by our clients.John Jenkins [@],edgemarketing[@]

Great camera, regardless of the price. Strongly recommend getting the Nikon-to-4/3 adapter. Using still camera lens' offer all sorts of depth-of-field options.

We use the EX-1 as well, and this camera is a viable alternative.

Get a shotgun mic for it, though. The built-in is located under the handle, so you'll get rubbing noise.

Coming from the DVX100, HVX200 and HPX500, this camera was very easy to get used to. I don't usually use auto features on any camera, so getting proper exposure and focus wasn't a problem. I think most of the negative reviews about the CODEC are coming from folks who don't understand the difference between Panasonic's implimentation of AVCHD for professional use and higher bit-rate MPEG2(XDCAM from the EX1)... and seriously, who doesn't know that H.264 and AVCHD are both MPEG4 (All DSLRs)? I also feel that some of these people were really wanting an HPX-170... or something with servo zoom and autofocus. If you don't like manual shooting or having to understand how your camera works, this one is not for you.

Comments about Panasonic AG-AF100 Professional Memory Card Camcorder:

I read many user reviews about this camera before purchasing it. I love (finally) having depth of field control. As many have said, it's not a run/gun camera so it's advisable to have a camera around for that purpose.

I would give it 5 stars except for couple of annoyances that I didn't hear anyone heretofore mention.

                            1. Auto focus response is way slow. I put the Lumix 14-140mm on it and had it find focus from near to far. It took upward of 10 seconds (!) for the camera to find focus. I put the same lens on my GH-1 that I use for B-roll, and the find-focus was near instantaneous. The salesman I talked to said that the GH-1 was faster in auto-focus because it was a consumer camera. Where is it written that a pro camera should be slower in auto focus?

                            2. Shutter speed goes in 1 stop increments (60, 125, 250, etc). This is horrible for fine tuning exposure. Again, my "cheapie" GH-1 lets you adjust shutter speed in 1/3 stop increments.

It's possible above issues could be addressed with firmware updates but I'd doubt it. Improvements will probably come with updated models.
