Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens

You Pay: $218.00
Product Highlights
  • 35mm Equivalent: 52.5mm
  • Aperture Range: f/1.8-22
  • For DT Alpha & Minolta DSLRs
  • Optimized for APS-C Image Sensors
  • Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)
  • Minimum Focus Distance: 9.6"
  • 7x Circular Aperture Blades
  • Filter Diameter: 55mm

The 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens from Sony is designed for D-SLR cameras with DT-format, APS-C sized sensors, so the lens actually has the 35mm equivalent of a 52.5mm focal length. The ultra fast f/1.8 wide-open aperture, along with the 7-blade circular diaphragm, allows you to work in low light, and create very smooth "bokeh" out of focus background effects. With its minimum focus distance of 9.05" it also allows you to get in close to your subjects.

The internal Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) ensures responsive and fluid autofocus operation. The focus mode switch allows you to quickly switch between autofocus and manual, and the 55mm filter diameter allows the addition of creative filter effects onto your images.

52.5mm (35mm Equivalent) Fixed Lens
When attaching this 35mm lens to your cropped APS-C size DSLR, it becomes a 52.5mm normal focal length that is similar to the perspective of the human eye.
Aperture Range: f/1.8-22
The bright f/1.8 maximum aperture of this lens provides a distinct advantage in hand-held shooting in low-light environments. It also provides very smooth and pleasing out of focus background effects.
For DT Alpha & Minolta DSLRs Optimized For APS-C Size / DT-Format Alpha & Minolta DSLRs
Designed specifically for the APS-C sized sensors used in many Sony Alpha DSLR cameras, this lens can be more compact and lightweight than it otherwise would be if built for a full-frame camera. It is recommended you one use this lens with DT-format Alpha & Minolta SLR cameras.
Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM)
Designed for fast, smooth and silent automatic focusing, Sony's unique Smooth Autofocus Motor (SAM) technology achieves high torque at low speed with rapid start/stop response. The AF control signals from the camera body are sent to the lens-mounted SAM unit, which drives the lens directly, helping to assure quick and accurate AF response.
Minimum Focus Distance: 9.6"
At 9.6" the minimum focusing of the lens makes it possible to move in for outstanding close-up shots.
7x Circular Aperture Blades
Circular aperture blades produce smooth, rounded "bokeh" background effects when capturing spot-light sources in your pictures. Because the aperture blades form a near circle at the wide openings used for low-light shots, spot-light sources have a pleasing out of focus effect.
Filter Diameter: 55mm
The 55mm front filter thread does not rotate, allowing rotating polarizing filters to be used.

Having read many positive reviews I've bought it to use with my Sony A35. Pros: this lens delivers excellent sharp image, correct colors and nice bokeh. f 1.8...2.8 are very good, from f3.2 to 7.1 it really shines. Delivers a lot of light, which is good for indoor use with no flash. Good for portraits too. This is something what you're expecting when you buy a new prime lens, great! Cons: Nevertheless it does some visible distortions, for example this problem is quite visible when you're taking pictures on the street with high buildings on its sides. The build quality is very average which gives you feeling of cheap stuff. Front barrel is shaky and slighly rattling, but it doesn't seem to affect the image quality. Having totally plastic body this lens seem to develop static electricity which constantly attracts the dust, which I don't like most. Some people say it is cheap, cmon guys! Check 'Nikon AF-S Nikkor 35mm f/1.8G DX Lens' here at B&H: it has metal mount, no moving parts outside - this feature alone protects your investment not pumping air/dust inside the lens during focusing movements. It has *wave* motor which is fast, quiet, precise and allows you manually adjust the focusing not even using the AF/MF switch. To compare it against the Sony's, this one has two more optical elements, so being more complex thus more expensive in production it costs -10% less and delivers pretty same image quality, except maybe bokeh, Sony's bokeh looks slightly better. Conclusion: this lens is a must for Sony users, get one! It is good and there is no better choice in this price range for Sony. p.s. You might get impression that my review for this lens seems to be rather negative. Well, I'm trying to be honest. It is good to be informed. I'm Sony Alpha user, but sometime I'm looking at Nikon lenses and regretting that I didn't choose Nikon at my beginning. There is way more rich choice of optics for Nikon and looks like it is of better quality than Sony's plastics-fantastics. Sorry for my bad English, it is not my first language. I hope my reviw\experience was helpful for you. Thank you B&H, you have best pricing and nice policy for Canadian customers too. Definitely I will buy here again.

I wasn't sure what to expect, but I needed something that was good in low light. After using it a few times, I am happy with the results. For the money, it's worth it! Used with Sony a57.

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens:

I bought this lens used from B&H two months ago. It was in great condition. Have been using it exclusively since then on my Sony Alpha 200. I have no need to use any other lens. The lens takes great pictures, and I am very happy with it. Yes, it is made of plastic but I don't take it on and off so the material does not matter to me.

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens:

I am what you might call a semi-pro photographer, and when I'm not out taking pictures I'm reading camera and lens reviews, and I thought I'd wade into the discussion here. Although I like sharp pictures in good light as much as anyone, I've been a little leery of prime lenses due to their inflexibility and concerns over fumbling with lenses while on a mountain trail or whatever. (I favor travel photos and have been to Italy three times.) But put this lens on the Sony A65 (or a58) with its in-body stabilization and you'll probably got the best photos for the weight and cost of anything on the market. I found the "normal" focal length of the 35 mm to be useful in lots of shooting situations and very sharp, although according to dxomark you need to stop it down to f/2.8 to achieve anything close to the lens's potential, which limits its attractiveness somewhat. I must add that the photos with this lens were not necessarily better than my Sigma 17-70 at 35mm, though the Sigma is a very well-regarded lens and is much heavier. For a walkaround lens on a small Sony body this lens can't be beat!

Great prime lens for the price, I mostly use it for street photography and low light conditions. It's a plastic casing which makes it light but it feels a little bit low quality.

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens:

I could not be more pleased with the sharpness and quality of this lens- at a fraction of the cost for some of Sony's higher-end lenses, like Carl Zeiss.

This lens, which I use with the Sony-SLT A77, will be a favorite for years to come. I love the look of the images I'm getting. It does a gorgeous job!

The only "con" I would say is the mainly plastic body, but for the cost, handle it with care and it'll last a long time!

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens:

The lens is very sharp starting from f2.0. Bokeh is smooth with round highlights. The lens does have a few drawbacks, which include a noisy and wobbling autofocus motor and the plastic lens mount. Overall as far as image quality is concerned this is one of the sharpest lenses for the Sony cropped sensor A-mount cameras and produces excellent bokeh.

I do a lot of low-light video with a Sony A57 (usually filming concerts at small bars and clubs) and this lens works really well for the price. I had read plenty of reviews criticizing the plastic body, but for a low-cost lens you can't expect much. This glass was way sharper than I expected, I had debated between getting this or saving up for the 1.4, and I am quite happy with this model. I'm sure there will be a few situations where I wish I had that extra F-stop but for now this does exactly what I want.

This lens is fantastic at this price point. Works great in low light and the 50mm equivalent (for standard SLR) works well for natural light portraits as well as landscapes. It is also light weight and compact. An all around great performer.

I wondered why I was having trouble getting the sharpness I want out of the kit zoom for my Sony a65. This lens is much more sharp and better exposures. Just have to adjust to no zoom, but that's why cropping was invented...

This lens has become one of my favorites. Great bokeh, light weight and awesome price. The build quality could be more solid, but at this price point it's hard to expect more.

It's cheap and do the job. The auto-focus isn't that precise but I think its because of the low light pictures that i've taken

we purchased to take better indoor pictures (wider angle plus aperture). It works well and our primary lens to take indoor pictures. We are happy with this purchase and would recommend to others. I did consider the sigma 30mm/1.4 however, they were rolling out a new design and the outgoing models were known for some distortion at low apertures. Can't beat this value though someday I would like to compare the sony lenses with other manufacturers directly (like sigma)

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens:

I have yet to find something to complain about this lens.
It's obvious the build quality might not appeal to everyone, but these affordable fast primes are a great asset if you want quality images in an affordable "try out our prime lenses" affordable price.
i purchased a SONY NEX 6, and liked the new pancake 16-50mm. kit lens, but also bought the A-mount adapter from here at a Black Friday price, so I thought, I could afford this prime for now till I save up, or decide which CZ or SONY zoom I need.
I find this fast lens to be as good or better than Canon's 50mm. 1.8.
The rich colours are the improvement here, over Canon, and closer to looking like a Nikon.
i highly reccomend this product if you aren't sure which prosumer lens you want yet.
It converts to about 52mm. on a crop sensor
So is very useful for portraits, macro product shots, and scenic shooting, day or night.
Sharp as a tack on my NEX6.

Comments about Sony 35mm f/1.8 DT Alpha A-Mount Standard Prime Lens:

Sony put in the stuff that counts (good optics and a fast aperture) and kept the cost down by using plastic construction and a not-silent SAM focus motor. The good optics provide very sharp photographs, the f1.8 aperture lets you blur the background (bokeh) which isolates your subject. Consider this lens if you're on a budget and looking for a fixed focal length lens for portraits. For the money you really can't go wrong with this lens.

CA can be a problem!
