Let me start by saying the only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because of the price, and I've found in life (especially with photo products) if that's your only complaint it's probably worth saving for... I had a canon 100-400 a few years ago when I switch to nikon. Nikon doesn't have anything similar (their 80-400 is terrible) so I went with their 70-300 VR and was impressed with the value. I also realized I really liked the size and weight and range of the lens for a FF camera for the tele work I do. When I switched back to canon, I got a 7D with the 70-300IS when they had a rebate option. That lens is terrible thanks to it's build and the fact the front element rotates. I then got a tamron 70-300VC as soon as they were available. It's a wonderful budget zoom, much better than the canon version (non L) but after a year of use the zoom ring and focus rings broke. This was in the middle of a sunrise shoot causing me to miss a pretty epic shot. It's since been fixed, but it made me realize if I can't trust a lens in the field it needs to be replaced. So I ordered this lens as soon as I got home. Wow, it's rock solid. Yes it's slightly bigger, but it's built like a tank. It feels much better than the push/pull 100-400. It's also sealed better and has better IS. Not the the 100-400 wasn't sharp, but this feels sharper. I'm very impressed with it. My biggest complaint is the cost followed by the fact canon thinks we should pay another [$]for the tripod colar (that they give you with the 100-400 and 70-200 2.8s). The added weight is also a bit of a bummer, but it's not a deal breaker and it does make for a nice solid setup when shooting. The zoom lock is covered by the hood when it's reversed though. Not the end of the world, but when you're putting it away you have to switch the switch before mounting the hood reversed.

The sharpness compared to the gold lens is remarkable. The only regret is that it is slow.
I do sports indoors and at night.. I constantly need to shoot at 6400 or H and get grain with my 7D.. Wish I got the faster lens.. or the 70-200 f2.8...
For portraits you will want to reshoot all your old stuff (if it was possible). Be careful, will get paper-cuts from the sharpness. j/k

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I am using this lens on my 7D. At first look I was intimidated by its size and weight but that did not last long. After ten minutes of shooting it felt very comfortable and balanced. It is sharp, the auto focus is fast and the image stabilizer is amazing. This is a great lens for my landscape photography. It gives me the range that I am looking for and I am completely satisfied with this lens and its results.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

This lens is super sharp. I use it with a 40D though I am planning on upgrading to the 7D MkII when (if) it's released. The IS is awesome especially at the long end of the zoom it really comes in handy. The lens is much more compact than the 70-200mm L lenses and gives you that extra zoom. As most reviews on here, I was worried about the f4-5.6, though after using the lens, I quickly forgot about that and was just loving this lens. If you decide to purchase this lens, you will wonder why you took so long deciding to get it or not! I forked out the $$ for the official canon tripod collar (well asked for it as a present for my birthday as it's hard to justify the cost) but it's a very solid tripod collar and I have complete trust in this collar holding my lens and camera. It also gives you a much better grip when taking handheld shots. I just couldn't risk it all by getting one of the $ cheap tripod collars – the canon is an all metal construction! I'm also considering getting the 1.4x TC. The only negative I think is the additional cost for the tripod collar – it has nothing to do with the performance of the lens but canon obviously believe this is more of a handheld lens. You can't help but think they'd be able to make the $ + tripod collar for much cheaper than they are selling it. All of their tripod collars are around that price – I have to admit though, I don't regret getting the official canon tripod collar.

Purchased primarily for outdoor sports photography and video. Outstanding lens. Gets a little heavy when recording video free hand. Would recommend a monopod or tripod for longer videos. Weight wasn't an issue for me on photos.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

Love this lens. Gives me the high quality photos and videos I want. I wanted a camera and lens to shoot sports photography (track, volleyball, and softball), travel, and wildlife. I researched extensively what to buy and am not disappointed at all with this lens. I debated on the 70-200L f4 because of the lighter weight (1/2 lb), but when it came down to it, didn't want to loose the distance. It does get heavy when recording longer races, but is worth it.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I've had this lens about two weeks now and shot somewhere around five hundred images with it. It has been an upgrade from the non-L version of the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. This is my second L-series lens and I am becoming sold on them as the way to go. This lens is very sharp, almost astoundingly sharp. I have been using it on a 70D body and it is truly fantastic. The image quality is phenomenal and a good upgrade from the earlier lens.

The weight and size are quite manageable. It fits nicely into a Lowepro Toploader Pro 70AW holster case. I don't have any problem with the handling on the 70D, although I may end up getting a grip for the camera body to improve the handling a bit.

The only thing that I am less than completely satisfied about is the lack of tripod ring in the box. I knew about that going in, but it's still going to be a necessary upgrade and additional expense.

Overall; great lens and I'm extremely happy with it.

I am a nature photographer. I shoot a lot of birds of all sizes so I frequently photograph fast moving subjects.
I have the Canon 800mm so I bought this lens to supplement a shorter field. This lens feels great when you hold it and it performs as expected. It produces sharp clear images images that will impress even a picky photographer like myself.
            I do recommend this lens.
The only thing I didn't like about the lens is of course how much money jumped out of my wallet to bring it home.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I've only had it for a few weeks, so still getting to know the lens a bit, but its not looking like a steep learning curve. Does a great job.

It's a very solid build and love the compact size but its big on quality photos. I've got this paired with a 70D, and quite happy with that combo.

This is a move up for me from the non-L 70-300IS USM. Literally from day one and my first few shots I saw a huge difference in the quality of photos. Love the manual override on this lens.

I mainly shoot birds and wildlife and so wanted a lens that would be good for a lot of handheld shooting. It is heavier than plastic kit lenses, but with the optional tripod ring the foot serves as a great grip for your hand to steady while tracking.

I thought the lens might be a little soft at first but it was my technique and camera shake that needed improving. On a tripod forget it, it will produce very sharp images. Image stabilization works very well, but I do best at faster shutter speeds anyway on birds in flight but even at that you can tell a difference when on and not.

I've mainly shot 100-300mm and gotten some really good results from F5.6 to F8. Usually try to stay under 800 ISO. With birds I'm mainly shooting 1/1000 to 1/2500 sec.

I'm a hobbyist and shooting handheld you're going to throw a bunch away, but I'm getting better and when it counts I've had for me anyway some very good keepers that I am happy with. This lens is truly a great addition to my photography.

Rating wise. I put a 4 instead of 5 only because they made the expensive tripod ring an option. There are so many more options to grip when you have that tripod collar on, I really view it as a necessity. Plus really helps balance the whole rig better when you put it on a tripod or monopod.

Amazing build quality and fantastic zoom; It is smooth and effortless. This lens is heavier than I thought it would be but still a great companion for travel. I decided on this lens after over a month of thinking about the 70-200mm 2.8 II. In the end I chose the further reach over the lower aperture. I did this because I wanted primarily a travel lens and not a portrait lens that weighed twice as much. I knew in my heart that when it came down to packing the 2.8II in the bag for a trip that I wouldn't do it. I woudl choose my iphone 5s or Fuji X-Pro1 instead. With this lens I will take it along and have more versatile shot taking capabilities.

Traded up replacing my EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 with this L lens, what a great investment. Not as nice a lens as my 20-200mm f/2.8L but more focal lenth, smaller and lighter, and much sharper and better AF characteristics than the non-L lens.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I am still pretty much a novice photography and was inspired to take back up a hobby a enjoyed awhile ago. My kids are of the age that they are getting more into sports and my "regular" lens just wasn't cutting it. This lens is compact enough that I don't feel like I look out of place on the side lines but has enough zoom to get me close to the action. The image stabilization and autofocus have been smooth.
The lens can get heavy so I am considering getting a monopod for it.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

After handing down my non-L 70-300mm f/4-5.6 to my son, I was left without a travel lens and one that could reach out beyond my 70-200mm f/2.8L. Trying to decide to wait for an updated 100-400mm f/4-5.6L or buy the current 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L, which would give me the focal lengths I really need, I decided to go ahead an pick up the 70-300mm f/4-5.6L. I am so glad that I did. This lens is awesome for it's size, weight, and price and far exceeds my previous 70-300mm non-L in sharpness and AF capture and retain speeds. I'll pick up the 100-400mm when the updated one comes out. But I am not in any rush with this lens always on my camera.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

Last fall, I upgraded from a 7D with a 28 – 135mm lens I used most of the time, to a 5D Mark III with a 24 – 105mm lens – my first L lens. Quickly, I learned I often needed more reach, for "walking around" shots I like. I considered the 70 -200mm 2.8f, because I was unsure about 4f-5.6f for the 70 – 300 mm. When I satisfied myself the 5D Mark III produces good quality for my purposes by increasing the ISO, I decided the additional 100 mm was a good tradeoff for me.

I am thrilled with the 70 – 300mm. Focus speed is the best I have ever experienced. Images are exceptionally sharp. The two lenses I now have are able to cover the ranges I have encountered . It is heavy, but worth the weight. I saw one review indicating concern for its long depth of field versus the 2.8f lens. So far, this has not been an issue for me. I think I am covered for the lens range I need.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I am a hobby enthusiast with a primary love of nature photography, with a special interest in wildlife / bird photography. Furthermore, I really demand sharpness in my images. Although this lens doesn't quite have the reach of a 400mm (or longer) lens, the 70-300L IS comes close. I have been using it on practice shoots with a EOS 70D and the combo has demonstrated very fast and accurate focus yielding images that are sharper than I could have hoped.

At its weight (much lighter) and short form factor than the 100-400L that I otherwise would have taken on an upcoming rainforest trek, it is much more "usable" as a hand held lens than the 100-400 L that I have used on previous wildlife expeditions.

The rotating zoom ring (in contrast to the push pull zoom of the 100-400) is also a big plus.

So far I have found the performance and image quality to be excellent. As good or better than i had hoped for. Couple that with relatively light weight and it seems that it will be a perfect partner for an expedition where much of my shooting will be handheld and I will need to be carrying all my days working gear on my back (or belt).
