Let me start by saying the only reason this isn't a 5 star review is because of the price, and I've found in life (especially with photo products) if that's your only complaint it's probably worth saving for... I had a canon 100-400 a few years ago when I switch to nikon. Nikon doesn't have anything similar (their 80-400 is terrible) so I went with their 70-300 VR and was impressed with the value. I also realized I really liked the size and weight and range of the lens for a FF camera for the tele work I do. When I switched back to canon, I got a 7D with the 70-300IS when they had a rebate option. That lens is terrible thanks to it's build and the fact the front element rotates. I then got a tamron 70-300VC as soon as they were available. It's a wonderful budget zoom, much better than the canon version (non L) but after a year of use the zoom ring and focus rings broke. This was in the middle of a sunrise shoot causing me to miss a pretty epic shot. It's since been fixed, but it made me realize if I can't trust a lens in the field it needs to be replaced. So I ordered this lens as soon as I got home. Wow, it's rock solid. Yes it's slightly bigger, but it's built like a tank. It feels much better than the push/pull 100-400. It's also sealed better and has better IS. Not the the 100-400 wasn't sharp, but this feels sharper. I'm very impressed with it. My biggest complaint is the cost followed by the fact canon thinks we should pay another [$]for the tripod colar (that they give you with the 100-400 and 70-200 2.8s). The added weight is also a bit of a bummer, but it's not a deal breaker and it does make for a nice solid setup when shooting. The zoom lock is covered by the hood when it's reversed though. Not the end of the world, but when you're putting it away you have to switch the switch before mounting the hood reversed.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I initially purchased the Canon 70-300mm IS (non L) lens. The price is reasonable, and it is compact and lightweight. Can get good center to edge sharpness if aperture is set between f8 and f11. I decided to try the Canon 70-300 L lens, and what a big difference in performance. The first thing I noticed, the images are very sharp and has excellent contrast. Focusing is much faster and quieter then the non L lens. The front element does not rotate, so that's good when using a polarizer. It also focus slightly closer. The zoom and focus ring turns very smooth. Canon usually locate the zoom ring towards the rear of the lens, but this time they placed the zoom ring towards the front. So I find myself grabbing the focus ring instead. For the price of this lens, it would have been nice if Canon included the tripod mount. This lens is much heavier than the non L version. I like that it is compact in size, so it can fit in just about any smaller camera bag. I decided to keep the L lens and very happy with it.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I used to own the 70-300mm IS none L series. I sold it and bought the L series. The lens is amazing. I use the lens for landscape, parades and sports. I get some amazing pictures. It has a fast focus and very sharp images. Despite the F/4-5.6mm it is good at low light. I love this lens. I am awaiting the release of the 100-400mm but I will be still holding on to the 70-300mm. I am not worried about the weight because I get more control and less shake in low light situations. See the photos below.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I got this lens to shoot wildlife and sports. I have had it just under a month and shot many bird photos. It's very sharp, much sharper than the 70-300 non-L series canon lens it is replacing. It was absolutely a great lens upgrade for me. I would recommend this lens to anyone considering this range of focal lengths. I went with a 70-300 and the 400 separately instead of the 100-400. I can handhold the 70-300 but I think it would be harder to handhold the 100-400 at 2 inches longer and 3/4 lb more. I use the 400 on a tripod so the length and non-IS are not an issue. I got used to the zoom/focus rings quickly. I'm glad it came with a hood, but wish it came with the tripod collar as well since there are times when the weight can make the ball head on a tripod droop slightly. It has an accurate and fast autofocus and is quiet during focus as well. Overall it is a good value for the money.

I take aerial photos of ocean wildlife and I have been using a Canon XSI kit camera. The telephoto lens was great until I got this one! Wow what a difference. The lens does not spin around like the old lens, so now the polorizer filter is always in the right position. And the clarity is awesome! Now I'm just waiting for my Canon 7D Mark 11!

Debated between this lens, the 70-200 F4L or the 70-200 F2.8L for a while before deciding to pull the trigger on this lens. Really happy with my decision so far. I bought this lens to shoot ski photography and based my decision on a review of this lens on Shuttermuse.. The two factors that made me go with the 70-300 were 1.) the extra reach of this over the 70-200's and 2.) the smaller size and weight of this lens over the 70-200 F2.8 for carrying up and down mountains all the time. Thanks Shutter Muse, Canon, and B&H!

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I bought this lens to go along with a 5d III that I just purchased. It is a replacement for a 70-300 non L. This lens is a lot faster to focus and very sharp. I am not sure how much of the speed is the lens or the camera. I kept my 7d body and have used the lens to take soccer photos of my grandson. I sense it is faster on the 7d body too. The added weight is not a problem, but I also bought a mono pod (not used yet). The complaint that the lens does not come with a bracket as the other L zoom lenses does is understandable. I ended up buying on line a non Canon nock-off bracket for $. It works just fine. I was hoping Canon would have a new 100-400 and when it did not materialize as rumored, I decided to get this lens. It packs smaller and I will be taking it to Africa as my long lens. For now it is all I hoped for.

I am using this lens on my 7D. At first look I was intimidated by its size and weight but that did not last long. After ten minutes of shooting it felt very comfortable and balanced. It is sharp, the auto focus is fast and the image stabilizer is amazing. This is a great lens for my landscape photography. It gives me the range that I am looking for and I am completely satisfied with this lens and its results.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

This lens is super sharp. I use it with a 40D though I am planning on upgrading to the 7D MkII when (if) it's released. The IS is awesome especially at the long end of the zoom it really comes in handy. The lens is much more compact than the 70-200mm L lenses and gives you that extra zoom. As most reviews on here, I was worried about the f4-5.6, though after using the lens, I quickly forgot about that and was just loving this lens. If you decide to purchase this lens, you will wonder why you took so long deciding to get it or not! I forked out the $$ for the official canon tripod collar (well asked for it as a present for my birthday as it's hard to justify the cost) but it's a very solid tripod collar and I have complete trust in this collar holding my lens and camera. It also gives you a much better grip when taking handheld shots. I just couldn't risk it all by getting one of the $ cheap tripod collars – the canon is an all metal construction! I'm also considering getting the 1.4x TC. The only negative I think is the additional cost for the tripod collar – it has nothing to do with the performance of the lens but canon obviously believe this is more of a handheld lens. You can't help but think they'd be able to make the $ + tripod collar for much cheaper than they are selling it. All of their tripod collars are around that price – I have to admit though, I don't regret getting the official canon tripod collar.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

Purchased primarily for outdoor sports photography and video. Outstanding lens. Gets a little heavy when recording video free hand. Would recommend a monopod or tripod for longer videos. Weight wasn't an issue for me on photos.

I was able to use the EF 70-300 mm f/4-5.6L IS USM lens during an outdoor wedding. The lens is well balanced when coupled with the Canon 5D III. The pictures came out great, as expected in normal daylight.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

Love this lens. Gives me the high quality photos and videos I want. I wanted a camera and lens to shoot sports photography (track, volleyball, and softball), travel, and wildlife. I researched extensively what to buy and am not disappointed at all with this lens. I debated on the 70-200L f4 because of the lighter weight (1/2 lb), but when it came down to it, didn't want to loose the distance. It does get heavy when recording longer races, but is worth it.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I've had this lens about two weeks now and shot somewhere around five hundred images with it. It has been an upgrade from the non-L version of the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS USM lens. This is my second L-series lens and I am becoming sold on them as the way to go. This lens is very sharp, almost astoundingly sharp. I have been using it on a 70D body and it is truly fantastic. The image quality is phenomenal and a good upgrade from the earlier lens.

The weight and size are quite manageable. It fits nicely into a Lowepro Toploader Pro 70AW holster case. I don't have any problem with the handling on the 70D, although I may end up getting a grip for the camera body to improve the handling a bit.

The only thing that I am less than completely satisfied about is the lack of tripod ring in the box. I knew about that going in, but it's still going to be a necessary upgrade and additional expense.

Overall; great lens and I'm extremely happy with it.

Comments about Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6L IS USM Lens:

I am a nature photographer. I shoot a lot of birds of all sizes so I frequently photograph fast moving subjects.
I have the Canon 800mm so I bought this lens to supplement a shorter field. This lens feels great when you hold it and it performs as expected. It produces sharp clear images images that will impress even a picky photographer like myself.
                            I do recommend this lens.
The only thing I didn't like about the lens is of course how much money jumped out of my wallet to bring it home.
