The EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens from Canon is the perfect choice for nature, wildlife and sports photographers.

Using the three mode Optical Image Stabilization allows you to shoot at shutter speeds 4 stops slower, and the advanced third IS mode activates only when the shutter button is fully pressed, so you can pan with fast-moving subjects without the IS function interfering with composition and framing. An ultrasonic autofocus motor (USM) enables smooth, fast and quiet autofocus and a Power Focus mode allows smooth focus change which is especially important while shooting video. A focus preset function allows you to store focusing positions and return to them in an instant when needed. An AF stop button will pause autofocus with just a touch and manual focus override allows precise manual focus even in AF mode.

Image sharpness is enhanced with fluorite optics that deliver reduced chromatic aberration and SWC (SubWavelength structure Coating) reduces flare and ghosting. A circular aperture design helps to produce pleasing out of focus areas.

Dust and water sealing keeps the lens functioning even in less than ideal conditions and magnesium and titanium construction elements make it lighter than its predecessor. Fluorine coating on the front and rear lens surfaces allows dirt to be removed easily and an attachment slot is provided for a wire-type security lock. The EF 300mm f/2.8L is compatible with Canon's EF1.4x III and EF2x III extenders and this lens includes a lens hood, 52mm drop-in gelatin filter holder, a detachable tripod collar and a hard travel case.

Fluorite optics for sharper images and less chromatic aberration.
Lighter weight due to magnesium and titanium construction elements.
Three IS (Image Stabilization) modes offer a 4-stop shutter speed advantage.
Advanced image stabilization Mode 3 activates only when shutter button is fully pressed, allowing for panning to follow fast-moving subjects.
Ultrasonic autofocus motor and inner focus system enable fast, smooth and silent AF action.
Power Focus mode allows smooth focus change when shooting video.
Focus preset allows you to establish focus points and return to them quickly when needed.
Focusing distance range can be selected with a switch on the lens barrel. By setting a suitable focusing distance range, actual autofocus time can be shortened. The three focusing ranges are 6.6-19.7', 19.7' to infinity and Full range.
An AF Stop Button allows you to immediately pause autofocus action with a touch of a button on the lens barrel.
Dust and water sealing for shooting in the most challenging environments.
Detachable lens hood, a detachable, rotatable tripod collar, drop-in gelatin filter holder and hard travel case are supplied with the 300mm f/2.8L lens.

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I have had my new EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L ii for six months now. This review will focus on a specific question; should current owners of the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L "upgrade" to the mark ii version?

The short answer is "no". But there are other reasons than "upgrading" to consider, and a special case for those who shoot film. So read on.

    Picture Quality
Stunning. But not anymore than its predecessor. Frankly, you would be hard pressed to see the difference. It's there. And I know some tell-tale signs pixel peepers can look for. But no one can seriously argue that's its worth an upgrade for the picture IQ.

    Autofocus speed
Same thing as before. I've seen claims the new lens is faster. Well, mine is not. Definitely not. I shoot a lot of tracking shots, and just as before I take 3 to make sure 1 is spot on. That's still pretty fast. And its quite impressive for all the glass that needs to move around - just not lightning fast.

    IS
Here you get a noticeable upgrade. At least one stop. Also it settles faster. There is a new setting type "3" mode IS, which I personally prefer for most sports type shots. But remember that if the shutter speed is high enough its even better to turn off the IS. Finally, its somewhat less noisy than the original, which could be an important reason for film makers to upgrade.

    1.4x
A slight advantage for the newer model. If I shot birds for a living maybe a consideration. But then I would certainly go with a 400mm - so not sure how important this is (YMMV). I do not use 2.0x so no comments on that except to note that several reviews mention the mark ii as a slight upgrade.

    Handling & design
This is where I feel I got the most from the upgrade. Its only a little lighter, but its just that much lighter to make a difference when you are hauling it for several hours. Also, the recessed buttons are so much better. I hated it when the old ones got pushed accidentally - and it happened too often to me. The new focus function is highly useful for filming. Pre-focussing is the same, and I'm personally not a big fan of Canon's implementation now or then. I disliked the new foot design when I first used the 200mm f/2.0 IS L ii, but on the EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L ii it feels "right" because I always use it with the foot on. I also use the 90 degree clicks to position the lens, a nice, practical design detail. The hood is slightly different and handles better, but there still that awful knob to contend with.

    Conclusion
As an upgrade the better IS implementation and improved handling does not match the significant price differential between the original and the mark ii. At least not for photography. If using extenders is very important to you - than just maybe. Maybe. However, if you're shooting film - go for it if you can.

The market place seems to confirm this answer. Judging from review counts on the net and the flickr pool for this lens not that many EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L ii's are flying off the shelves. I also seldom see any of these in the wild - not even at sports events. Probably a side effect of the brutal cost cuts in the traditional news industry.

But there is more to the story. The original EF 300mm f/2.8 IS L is getting older every day. Some are still relatively new, but a lot are getting ready for their 10.th anniversary. With the very good used prices you can still get for your original lens and factoring in the cost of one major repair such as the IS will bridge a lot of the gap. In addition one day Canon will not repair these anymore - just ask 200L IS L f/1.8 owners about that sad scenario. And you get a short but welcome guarantee period that could be useful.

Remember that not even Canon lenses last forever. And IS lenses simply tend to fail more than non-IS lenses.

There is still some time for current owners to enjoy their original lens. Just remember to check the market place so you are not caught off guard and miss the boat when used prices begin to drop faster. If Sigma pulls off a great 300mm f/2.8 OS with three years warranty as they have just announced - that could hurt the old used lens prices a lot.

It looses one star for missing out on value. Optically its still a five for sure.

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

The buying experience from B&H was a breeze as usual.

I just received the lens yesterday used it today at first light before work to capture some images of waterfowl with aperture wide open using my 5DIII.

Out of the box, the lens performed as you have read. Sharp, excellent color, pleasing backbround blur, contrast, no CA. All without any AFMA.

The lens is well balanced, and easy to shoot with. I am new to the 3rd IS mode and will have to learn about that.

However, initial impressions are that this is an awesome lens, focuses quickly and responsively. It produces excellent images from edge to edge. It is costly, and large, but easy to hold (not sure if I could do it all day however). It will be great for sports and wildlife, though longer reach will be needed for smaller birds.

My big concern for this lens will be transport on trips. It will take up a lot of room in my pack, and may be a concern where weight limitiations are severe. Otherwise, this is a versitile must have lens, especially with a 1.4 III tc. Can't wait to get more experience with it.

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I couldn't be more pleased with this lens. As a professional sports photographer, I can attest that there is no better lens for stop-action, crisp images in low-light conditions than this lens. I was worried that it would be very heavy, but the version II is surprisingly lightweight. It's actually about the same weight as my 70-200mm IS f/2.8 L glass.

I wholeheartely recommend this lens. The case is lockable and solid enough to prevent damage in shipping and carrying from event to event.

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

This lens is amazingly sharp. Definitely the sharpest Canon L lens I have used to date. Although I photograph wildlife primarily with my Canon 500mm F/4L on a tripod, using this lens with the Canon 2X EF Extender III gives me an extremely sharp 600mm hand holdable lens. Some of my best flight photography has been done with this lens.

I strongly recommend this lens as extremely sharp with both the 1.4X and 2X Canon EF Extender III's. Also, it has the fastest autofocus of any lens I have used.

Amazingly sharp, great in low light, the contrast is almost perfect. I hardly do ANY post processing with this lens. It's expensive, but worth every penny. I had the 300 f/4 L lens, and while good for the price, it cannot in any way compare to this lens. I highly, highly recommend this lens to everyone.

The auto-focus is amazingly fast and accurate and the images are tack sharp. The heft of the lens takes some getting used to but I try to use it wiht a monopod when possible.

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

I use this lens either by itself or with Canonx TC III. The sharpness is fantastic even with 2x TC III. It weghs just 7lbs with the TC and camera so it can be hand held for catching birds in flight. I have also a Canon 800mm which is a little too heavy for hand holding, but this one with TC gives me the opportunity to capture the subjects far away and still gives tack sharp images. The image stablilizer in mode 3 is great but I think a little overrated. I have taken photos in both mode 1 and 3 with unpredictable subject movement, and both work great and as good. If you need a lens with versatile range, I recommend this with 1.4 III and 2x III TCs.

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

We all know this lens is expensive. However, if you're even reading this review, then chances are you can afford to buy one if you really want to...but honestly this is what happens when Canon designs a no compromise lens and then puts the price tag on it in the end, rather than having a fixed price point in mind and building a compromised lens just to meet that price.

With that said, the optical quality is truly astounding and has to be seen to be believed. The autofocus is as close to instantaneous as you could possibly get on a lens. Despite its weight, it's actually very easy to handhold, and balances well on a 5D Mark III and or EOS-1D X body. Finally, the image stabilization really does give you an extra 4 stops of handholding ability, which for me, completes the package and really makes this the ideal lens for sports and wildlife photography.

In conclusion, if you're still on the fence, go rent a copy, or borrow one through Canon Professional Services. Within a week you'll probably do what I did and buy one for yourself. I have no regrets.

Every thing that you read or hear is absolutely true about this lens..I was thinking twice about buying it , mainly because of cost. But if you can afford it or borrow it. This lens is worth it. Once you take it out and use it for a while, get use to how it handles and what are the best settings to use with it for different situations, light, speed,etc.. you will never regret the cost... Like I said Take it out and drive it......The results will amaze you.. that's all I can say..

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

Ridiculous was an adjective used by someone I know, when other superlatives were too weak in their description. There are a couple of lenses in my arsenal that are considered by many to be reference standards. But this one even leaves those behind and has no peer - in many different aspects.

The image quality will blow you away, words are useless here, the pictures you get will astound you. Razor sharp across the entire(!) frame and bokeh that is crazy delicious. No distortion or aberrations to speak of. The three modes of Image Stabilization work great with 4-stops of assistance.

I have a 1.4x extender and have used it with this lens with great results with regard to picture quality. The extender degrades the quality of any lens it's attached to, but this lens is so astonishing that when brought down a notch, it still provides a better image quality than other lenses in this focal range without the extender - the only exception I imagine would be the big brother of this lens, the EF 400mm f/2.8L IS USM II. I did experience more hunting while focusing in darker rooms on objects that didn't have much contrast with the extender on than versus off - the focus was fine with the extender, but it was lightning fast without it.

I can't speak much about the weather-proofing of this lens. It was a rainy day when it was delivered and I was too much of a wuss to bring it, or any other lens for that matter, outside. The build quality is simply superlative, something you notice immediately as you pull it out of its case. It's built like a tank.

I debated on purchasing this one versus its 400mm sibling - the ability to use the lens without a mono/tripod. Size and weight were a factor in that consideration. This one is definitely the more portable of the two and the shoulder strap is really helpful. I can use this thing hand-held easily for 4-5 hours (and people complain about their 24-70mm being heavy, seriously?!?). Actually, I think my legs and calves get a great workout hauling this thing around!

Unless you have experienced using another monster super-telephoto, be prepared to get noticed. This can be good and bad. Good in that you can pass out your business cards and look like a real professional. The bad is obvious, you'll receive comments (note that I purposely didn't use the word complements) and questions. Most people are curious and well-intended, but there's always a few oddballs that aren't.

The only really big negative here, but you expect it given the quality of this lens, is the price. If you can cough up the funds, this lens will not let you down. Also, it might be a good thing to get insurance for this and your other camera gear which also add to the cost. Things breakdown, wear out and worse, stolen; these are painfully expensive repair and replacement bills.

You might think after reading this that I'm trying to justify my purchase, don't believe me, go rent it! Guaranteed, you'll become a believer. I'll be looking into the 400 next year despite my scribbles above and the purchase of the 300. I think anyone would be more than satisfied with either one of these lenses - they are truly remarkable.

                          Good luck and happy shooting!

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

This lens is amazingly sharp, but what's even more impressive for my needs is that its performance remains exceedingly high even when combined with the Canon 1.4 extender, version III--fast focus and very sharp. There is a slight but noticeable drop off with the 2.0 extender, but that's to be expected. The new generation image stabilization is also outstanding, allowing for hand held shots at surprisingly low shutter speeds. Yes, it's still heavy, even though it's lighter than the previous version, but that's the price you pay for an optical marvel.

Comments about Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM Lens:

To be more precise, what I did when focusing on the small numbers of the license plate at 30 yards was to adjust from the menu. C. Fn III: Autofocus/Drive AF Microadjustments and I used #2- Adjust by lens. On the 5D MK II it's C. Fn III 8 and on the 7D it's C.Fn III 5. Again this is for "AF". The 300mm F/2.8 II isn't the choise of lens for "Birding" but with a Series III 1.4 and a 2.0 I've had very good results from a blind. I did notice a slight improvement when I went from the Series II 2.0 to the Series III 2.0. When photographing small birds with a minium DOF every little bit helps and an electronic cable release can make a difference too! Again, homework's done and I am very pleased with the "tack-sharp" quality of this lens!
